Jesus Walks On The Waters Of Change, Natali Chung '22
History of the Environment
This painting is inspired by the miracle of Jesus walking on waters in the New Testament. My religious affiliation holds great importance to me— and learning about the ties of religion and nature in Wille's History of the Environment class has spurred me to think of religion in a different way. I hope you enjoy this modern spin on this religious event.
Collige Et Impera: The United States Reengagement In Libya, Marco Schinella
Collige Et Impera: The United States Reengagement In Libya, Marco Schinella
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
President Biden's "America is back" pledge holds the potential to be put to the test with the ongoing crisis in Libya. The internationalization of the post-Ghaddafi Libyan breakdown, strained by great-power competition (GPC) dynamics, poses nonnegligible threats to the United States (US) national security that extends beyond Libya per se. Reframing the conflict from yet another Middle East and North Africa (MENA) conflict to an urgent multilateral Mediterranean security challenge will help elevate the country's profile on the global stage. This thesis outlines a qualitative, within-case study analysis of the ongoing Libyan crisis from the perspective of US national security …

Shadowcrest Manor, Michaela Bishop
The Tuxedo Archives
A soft cold breeze flowed throughout the whole house, it carried the scent of the Sea Island cotton and seawater, taking away the smell of dust and stillness. Shadowrest Manor was to become our new home here in Charleston. The manor had been vacant for a while since its last owner had passed away and leaving no will or surviving heir, the plantation was shut down. The outside was a little bit weather damaged however, Father is having the whole house repainted a colonial white, the front columns will be a nice off white to balance the main color. The …

Italian Society During World War Ii, Shira Klein
Italian Society During World War Ii, Shira Klein
History Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"This chapter showcases what life was like for ordinary Italians during the Second World War. Up to the 1980s, a typical textbook on Italian history told a narrative of victimhood and heroism, promoting the idea that most Italians had never wanted to join the war in the first place, and resisted both the Fascists and the Germans. It was Mussolini and his henchmen, according to this narrative, who led unwilling Italians into war. The Italian rank-and-file were anti-Fascist heroes and victims of the leadership’s repressive tactics, whereas the Fascist leaders were villainous perpetrators.[i] Since the 1990s, historians have shown that …

“The breakdown of authority is often cited as a primary cause of the disorders and maladies of society. The loss of respect for authority is seen as a major problem among the young. Many of the symbols of authority have lost their luster and seem no longer capable of evoking deference.

The Nwsl Soccer Scandal, Richard C. Crepeau
The Nwsl Soccer Scandal, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
As bad as Jon (not John) Gruden’s email revelations were, the news coming out of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) was worse. The principal player in this disaster is Paul Riley, who is now the poster boy for sexual harassment. His activity took place across two teams over six years while coaching NWSL teams in Portland and North Carolina. Riley had been one of the most respected and successful coaches in women’s soccer, in both the NWSL and with the United States National and Olympic teams. Over the past six years, he built this reputation and public image, although …

Long Summer Of Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

It has been quite some time since I have written one of these columns. It also has been a time of some wonderful sporting events, the continued disruption of events by the pandemic, and a continuation of troubling issues and chronic problems in the darker corners of sport. Where to begin?
Futurama: An Immersive Experience Of America's Automotive Future, James Miller
Futurama: An Immersive Experience Of America's Automotive Future, James Miller
Journal of Motorsport Culture & History
General Motors’ Futurama exhibit at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair offered a wildly popular immersive experience of American automobility twenty years in the future. The Fair proclaimed the “Dawn of a New Day” in “The World of Tomorrow” through comprehensive innovative architecture and design, which promoted the primary role of new technology, especially in the field of transportation. Futurama harnessed techniques of theatre and multi-media in unprecedented ways. Its narrow aim was to foster the construction of new highway systems hospitable to the growing population of modern cars. More broadly, Futurama sought to inculcate a new way of thinking …

Environmental Sustainability And The Framing Of Formula E Motor Racing In Uk And Flemish Newspapers, Timothy Robeers
Journal of Motorsport Culture & History
Developed in cooperation with the Fédération Internationale d’Automobile (FIA) as motor sport’s governing body, the fully electric racing series Formula E represents itself as a driving force in making the motor sport and automotive industries more environmentally sustainable (hereafter: ES). However, the question remains whether such ES efforts are picked up on by the media, and more specifically newspapers that are still considered a benchmark for in-depth and reflective journalism, despite a dramatic rise of online and social media coverage of sport. Combining a quantitative content analysis with a qualitative framing analysis, this article identified, compared and contrasted frames, and …

Mélange De Motifs: Custom Pattern Designs Inspired By The Interiors, Architecture, And Gardens Of Vaux-Le-Vicomte, Jill Christine Harmon
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
How can a historic precedent be successfully employed to inform modern design? History will always provide a degree of influence in contemporary design. In design, a historic precedent can be the backbone of a creative concept and stands as a relevant and informative aspect throughout the project. The precedent acts as a basis in developing designs with substance and meaning and is a fundamental practice in architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design. Delving into the history of Vaux-le-Vicomte, often referred to as Vaux, provided three relevant aspects which compose the historic precedent for this MFA project. First, the creative initiative …

Examining Health Inequity In Ancient Egypt, Samantha Rose Gonzalez
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis explores the history of medicine in ancient Egypt between the Middle and New Kingdoms, and offers a case study highlighting the use of religion and magic in healing and analyzing health inequity. I am interested in medical practices, treatments, diagnosis methods, and access to healthcare in the ancient world. I seek to bridge the gaps and help unify the knowledge surrounding ancient Egyptian medical practices and contribute to the studies in the history of medicine. I explore types of diseases that commonly affected the ancient Egyptians and how they integrated religion and magic into their understanding and treatment …
Star Wars: The Clone Wars And Popular Culture In America, Ubaldo Zermeno
Star Wars: The Clone Wars And Popular Culture In America, Ubaldo Zermeno
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
The Clone Wars animated series is part of the Star Wars storyline taking place before the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. The central premise of The Clone Wars is that of war, one being waged by a biologically manufactured clone army. George Lucas’ intent for the original Star Wars was to create a social dialogue reflecting the ideological reasons for, and effects of, the Vietnam War. The Clone Wars continues Lucas’s examination of American wartime policies and their effects on society.
The themes in The Clone Wars are diverse; however, this analysis will cover the …

On Sport and Society
Major League baseball once again found itself among the inhabitants of the obtuse and sinister, not to mention the silly. Baseball Commissioner, Rob Manfred, having spent much of the off-season seeking the destruction of large parts of the minor league baseball system, turned his attention to more important matters as mid-season approached.
