The past few months were loaded with top-level sporting events, with some surprising developments, and with more than the usual quota of madness. So fasten your seat belt for an overlong and overblown two editions of Sport and Society.

The Outcome Of Relationships Between Students, Parents, And School Personnel While Desegregating Schools Within Mississippi 1950s To 1970s, Delaynie Voortman

Voces Novae

Between 1950 and the end of the 1970s, schools in Mississippi went through the formal process of legal desegregation. The oral histories of a select few of these students live on to explain the hardships Black students faced in segregated classrooms and integrated classrooms alike. Students, parents and teachers who integrated the education system were forever changed by community activism, local legislature, and personal interactions. This paper will examine and compare how different teacher and student relationships impacted the various futures that students went on to live, shaping their decisions on education and on life.

Sovereignty, Statehood, And Subjugation: Native Hawaiian And Japanese American Discourse Over Hawaiian Statehood, Nicole Saito

This research project investigates the impetus for the reversal of fortunes between the Japanese American and Native Hawaiian communities in the debate over Hawaiian statehood. It finds that the groups' differential political development during World War Two catalyzed both the progression of statehood along Japanese American interests as well as the marginalization of Native Hawaiians. Ultimately, the reversal of fortunes diminished the groups' burgeoning racial solidarity from the 1930s.

Faith And Nationalism: How Christianity Shaped England During World War I, Taylor Kliss

This paper examines the impacts of Christianity in England during World War I. More specifically, it goes into detail on the unique ways in which Christian rhetoric blended with nationalist propaganda to create a Christian nationalism that was pivotal in garnering support for the English war effort.

This paper intends to link the development of "Greater Los Angeles" with the Pacific Electric and its predecessor companies. The Spanish Civil War was a conflict that exacerbated political tensions felt during the interwar period. Democratic powers were keen to avoid another global conflict and were quick to pledge neutrality in the fight between Spain’s Second Republic and Franco’s nationalist rebels. The United States was similarly eager to avoid another war, but also sought a neutral standing on the grounds that the Second Republic leaned left of American politics. It was in this context that American volunteers travelled to Spain to aid the Republican war effort. In their service and writings, these volunteers expressed their grievances against the politics …

Diaspora by Design: The Systematic Displacement of Tampa’s African-American Populace, 1925-1974 is a political and economic history that maps the transformation of the city’s urban landscape through a variety of federal programs. It examines the the ways that Tampa city leaders employed a variety of federal programs, and funding, to shape the economic, social, and cultural environment of Tampa’s Black population over the course of five decades.

First introduced in 1875, Blaine Amendments restrict private, parochial schools from utilizing publicly acquired funds. While the federally proposed Blaine Amendment died on the Senate floor, 37 states have adopted constitutional language that limits and/or bars religious schools from receiving public funds. Fraught with bigotry and labeled as discriminatory, such measures have not gone without challenge and the judicial system has delivered numerous decisions on funding public and private schools. However, jurisprudence reveals significant shifts in court decisions over time. Through analysis of Supreme Court cases from Everson v. Board of Education (1947) to Espinoza v. Montana (2020), this work …

In 1989, after the Ta'if agreement, the war in Lebanon started to fade, which ended years of one of the most destructive civil conflicts in the region with no decisive winner or loser. The year also marked the birth of a new Lebanese generation who did not experience the war in person. It is a generation of postmemory, a term Maria Hirsch coined to describe the reminisces of those who did not have a personal encounter with past traumatic events. Upending The "Racial Death-Wish": Black Gay Liberation And The Culture Of Black Homophobia, Kailyn Pope

This thesis analyzes the origin and impact of Black homophobia found in activist spaces of mid- to late-twentieth-century American society. Black gay Americans were subjected to intersecting forms of systemic and cultural oppression that were exceedingly hard to escape due to both the homophobia in Black spaces and the racism in gay spaces. Black gay activists and artists thus had to create their own avenues of expression where they and others could fully embrace what it meant to be Black and gay. "Life is Beautiful illustrates a popular misconception about Italy's role in the Holocaust. The film features the good Italian and the warped view that Italy treated Jews kindly in the late 1930s and during World War II. Historians have proven this claim to be grossly exaggerated, arguing that Italians persecuted Jews vigorously. Yet popular representations of the past-films, novels, museum exhibits, and websites-continue to give credence to the notion that Italians were overwhelmingly good to Jews. Although France and Germany cultivated similar self-acquitting myths in the decades immediately after the war, they eventually moved on to accept the more …

Social Studies education throughout the United States sustains settler futurity, white supremacy, and coloniality, as it rarely engages with Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) hxstories and structural violence. For middle schoolers, this is especially troublesome as social justice pedagogies are minimal for this demographic. To shift this, this field project offers an 8^th grade decolonial Social Studies curriculum on 19^th century U.S. Westward colonization; this topic was intentionally chosen as it is an opportunity to disrupt settler epistemologies. This weekend, there was some good news, and there was some bad news in sport, a high and low, and both of considerable significance. The good news came from hockey. After the onset of communism in Russia, relations between the United States and Russia have been tense up to the modern day. Even the fall of the Soviet Union could not usher in a permanent peace between the two countries, with mistrust pouring over from both parties. Utilizing both primary sources and commentary from subject matter experts, this paper argues that in order to achieve a legitimate and sustainable policy of peace between the United States and Russia, policymakers need to first understand the history and culture of the people they are reaching out to. The United States declared war on the United Kingdom in the hopes of defending the nation's national honor. However, the United States Army was unprepared to go wage war. The army's supply system, militia system, and field commanders failed and led to a disastrous first year of conflict.

This articles looks into the creation of a display in the Harding University Brackett Library in the fall of 2020. The display highlights the 946 members of the Harding community who, in 1957, signed a statement of attitude regarding their desire to fully integrate the school.

A little over a month ago, the rocket scientists at the NCAA once again showed just how dense they can be. During the event known as March Madness, the NCAA, as it is prone to do, produced some madness of their own.

On Sport and Society

The first time that I remember the issue of gender and sport being raised was sometime in the 1960s when charges surfaced at the Olympics concerning the East German women’s track and field team. Their success led some in the west, especially the Americans, to charge that some female athletes from East Germany and the Soviet Union were, in fact, males. For the most part, I dismissed these claims as the complaints of bad losers. Others treated the charges more seriously, and sex tests came to the European Games in 1966 and the Olympic Games in 1968.

It contains her essay on using library resources, a three-page sample of her research project on the consequences that Japanese American advocacy for Hawaiian statehood had on Native Hawaiians, and her works cited list.
