Guatemalan woman who speaks K’iche as well as Spanish. She came to the U.S. in 2015 with her 9 year old child. She now has children born in the US and children who live in Guatemala. Her sister lived in St. James and she joined her sister there after briefly returning to Guatemala. She’s happy that she can send money to support her family members in Guatemala and works hard to provide for her transnational family.

Man born in the mid 60s. He is from a big city in Mexico. His mother was born in Minnesota but lost her papers when returning back to Mexico. She wasn’t able to come back to the U.S. until she was in her 80s. He and his wife came to the U.S. because their friends invited them. He planned on only staying for 6 months and he’s now lived in St. James for 29 years.

Her daughter came first and lived in Texas, then sent her money to come by train through Mexico. Regularized her US status in 1986. Worked in the US for 25 years in Texas and Minnesota. Came to St. James in 1989.

Salvadoran man born in the early 60s and came to California in the 1990s. Got a college education and was a teacher and entrepreneur in El Salvador. Work in clothing design and printing in California and bought a house. Pushed by economic precarity around 2008 to move to St. James where he already had family members and a real estate investment. One of his children was in college in Mankato at the time of the interview.

In the push to meet state standards and cover the vast curriculum in short periods of time, many educators have begun to teach to the textbook. Kristen Dilger interviews John Lyman, a graduate of the Boonshoft School of Medicine. He worked in emergency medicine until his retirement where he works part-time doing occupational health. Part of the class of 1980, Lyman discusses his collegiate career, including why he chose Wright State University's new medical college and talks about what it was like attending the college. He talks about the challenges and processes of attending a new medical college, and how attending the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine assisted him in his early career.
