Four thousand years ago, Archaic period peoples hunted swordfish in the Gulf of Maine. In addition to fauna remains, archaeologists have recovered stone representations of the distinctive sword-shaped bill, suggesting that these animals had a cultural significance that went beyond their dietary value. What archaeologists don't know is precisely where and how the fish were taken. In our own time, swordfish rarely come inshore. Commercial operators, both harpooners and long-liners, fish the eastern side of Brown's and George's Banks and points farther along the continental shelf. The Northeast Archives is proud to announce that we have completed reprocessing and preservation work on two major collections, the Aroostook County Collection and the Maine State Federated Labor Council Collection. Our graduate assistants made preservation master and CD copies of each tape and expanded the descriptions of the tape contents to better assist researchers in finding the information they need. Leon S. Forman (L'39) was an authority on bankruptcy and creditors' rights. He practiced law for more than sixty years and served as chairman of the Philadelphia Bar Association's corporation, banking and business law section, and as chairman of the Pennsylvania Bar Association's bankruptcy committee. He was a member of the American Law Institute. He taught bankruptcy and creditors' rights at the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania and at Temple University School of Law. He died in 2006.

In this interview, retired Brigadier General Robert Hardaway shares details of his remarkable life as an army surgeon, in particular his memories of World War II and the Korean War, as well as his continuing life-saving research. Hardaway entered military life in 1916, the year of his birth, as his father was the post surgeon at Camp John Hay in the Philippines. He spent his childhood traveling extensively as the army transferred his father successively to Paris, France, Denver’s Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, Ft. Michael Levy (L '69) is the Chief of Computer Crimes at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He has served in the U.S. Department of Justice since 1980 with two one-year excursions into private practice. Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s office, Mr. Levy worked as a Public Defender and as an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia and as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He also had his own law practice for four years.

Professor of Sociology and Dean of the College Donald W. Hinrichs was interviewed on January 30, 2004 as the first part of two interviews by Michael J. Birkner. During these interviews, he discusses his childhood in Baltimore, going to college in the 1960's, and his experience in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He also describes his time at Gettysburg, in particular the growth and development of the Sociology Department and his experience as a gay faculty member.
