Hispanic Migrant Labor In Oregon, 1940-1990, Colleen Marie Loprinzi
Hispanic Migrant Labor In Oregon, 1940-1990, Colleen Marie Loprinzi
Dissertations and Theses
Hispanic Migrant Labor in Oregon, 1940-1990, describes the history and conditions of Hispanic farmworkers migrating from the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Latin America after the 1940s. This paper uncovers the history and contribution of a people easily forgotten, but essential to the well-being of the economy and the cultural diversity of Oregon. Though much has been lost in the comings and the goings of these people, bits and pieces have been recovered from old newspaper clippings, occasional documents recording the concerns and responses of the federal and state governments, rare articles tucked away in little known periodicals, and …

A Tear In The Fabric: Conflict And Labor Relations In The Chattanooga Textile Industry, 1917, John A. Stern
A Tear In The Fabric: Conflict And Labor Relations In The Chattanooga Textile Industry, 1917, John A. Stern
Honors Theses
Local industrial textile workers began to react during World War I to the injustices that had been growing in the local textile industry since the 1890's when the factory system started to dominate Chattanooga's textile production. By May, 1917, the city's textile workers became aware of the social gap that had been evolving under the new manufacturing system and determined to lessen it by unionizing under the leadership of the United Textile Workers of America, an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor.

Class Culture And Generational Change: Immigrant Families In Two Connecticut Industrial Cities During The 1930s, Ivan Greenberg
Class Culture And Generational Change: Immigrant Families In Two Connecticut Industrial Cities During The 1930s, Ivan Greenberg
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Recent social history stresses the autonomy of workers, especially the ways that immigrant families made "lives of their own." However, little attention is focused on the particular experiences of the second generation and the ways they forged their own group identity. This study, by locating the emergence of this generation, highlights an important demographic change within the working class.
Familiar developments of the 1930s take on new meaning. For example, the pivotal role of the second generation in the rise of the CIO helps to recast the early history of industrial unionism. The resurgence of the labor movement parallels the …

The Federal Government And The Industrial Workers Of The World, 1917-1918: An Attempt To Crush A Labor Union, Michael Torrance Prahl
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) was founded in 1905 as an industrial union: an organization of working people based on where they worked rather than the type of work they performed. From the beginning, the IWW was militant in its rhetoric. The preamble to its constitution declared: "The working class and the employing class have nothing in common." The IWW also advocated direct action (e.g., strikes and sabotage) as the means by which to accomplish their goal of a complete take-over of the means of production by the working class. Both its rhetoric and its actions created a …

Work And Welfare: How Industrialists Shaped Government Social Service During The Progressive Era, Cynthia Hamilton
Work And Welfare: How Industrialists Shaped Government Social Service During The Progressive Era, Cynthia Hamilton
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article focuses on the welfare work of industrialists which was developed as a mechanism for fighting trade unionism during the Progressive era. This focus is designed to place welfare in its proper perspective within the political economy and to identify its political and economic functions. The article concludes that industrial welfare was one of the instruments used in creating a work ethic in the United States and one of the mechanisms of social engineering both in and outside of industry.

Unm's First Dean Of Women: Lena C. Clauve, Betty Huning Hinton
UNM Historical Documents
This biography of Lena C. Clauve (pronounced "clove" as in the spice) was initiated as a segment of a project suggested by Betty Kelley, a close personal friend and colleague at APS, who is interested in history and research of all types. The initial idea was to interview retired women who had been in the work world during a time when most women stayed in the home, raising children. The project was designed to research the reasons for their working outside the home, and the influences in their lives that brought it about.
