Curated Exhibit: The Untangling Of Diabetes Mellitus: Portraits Through Time, Laura J. Hall
Posters and Presentations
The Untangling of Diabetes Mellitus: Portraits Through Time exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, explored the history and advancements in the treatment of diabetes. With origins dating back to ancient times, the understanding of diabetes has evolved significantly. The exhibit traced the key moments in the discovery and treatment of the disease, highlighting research from UNM's participation in national diabetes studies, including the Diabetes Prevention Program. Special focus was given to the impact of diabetes on minority populations in New Mexico. The exhibit was displayed from October 2009 to August 2010 at the UNM Domenici Center for Health Sciences …
Doing The History Of Science And The Suspension Of Belief, Richard H. Beyler
Doing The History Of Science And The Suspension Of Belief, Richard H. Beyler
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1817) described the "suspension of disbelief" as a sort of bargain between the author and the audience necessary to creative literature. Conversely, one might describe the "suspension of belief" as a necessary element of doing the history of science. In modern civilization, science counts as the social institution which delineates the boundaries of knowledge per se, as opposed to belief, opinion, etc. We might describe this as the cultural myth of science--not in the sense of judging its truth or falsehood, but rather in the sense of its being foundational and largely unquestioned in modern society. Yet …

Failure And Success: Paul R. Sieber, Nelson F. Fisher, And The Fifty-Year Struggle For The Gettysburg College Health Center, Dallas A. Grubbs
Hidden in Plain Sight Projects
In the winter of 1954, four men and one woman set out to accomplish a goal that Gettysburg College had been pursuing for more than forty years. All five of them were trustees of the college, and together they formed a special committee within the Board of Trustees. They were the Infirmary Committee, a small body composed of Paul R. Sieber, Nelson F. Fisher, Mrs. Charles W. Baker, John H. Beerits, and Arthur Hendley. In 1954, following one of the most violent outbreaks of influenza ever to strike the college campus, Chairman Hiram H. Keller authorized Paul Sieber, a prominent …

Jews Under Surveillance: Censorship And Reading In Early Modern Italy, Federica Francesconi
Jews Under Surveillance: Censorship And Reading In Early Modern Italy, Federica Francesconi
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
This talk explores how Counter-Reformation’s dynamics affected the readings of Italian Jews, after the political changes of the 1550s and the promulgation of the Index by Clement VIII in 1596 (with the ban of the Talmud). Dealing with censorship, expurgation and banning of books, in fact, Italian Jews found themselves caught up between the intricate and often conflicting positions between the Congregation of the Index and the Office of the Inquisition. Based on the analysis of both Inquisitorial sources (proceedings, guidelines and censors’ reports) and biographical accounts, I will explore how rabbis and converts, who worked as appointed censors for …

The Paratexts Of Jacob Marcaria: Addressing The (Imagined) Reader In Mid-Sixteenth-Century Italy, Adam Shear
The Paratexts Of Jacob Marcaria: Addressing The (Imagined) Reader In Mid-Sixteenth-Century Italy, Adam Shear
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
For a few years in the middle of the sixteenth century (1557-1564), a Hebrew press was active in Riva del Garda (Riva di Trento) under the management of Jacob Marcaria, a physician. The business arrangements of the press seem complicated and difficult to reconstruct (having only the evidence of the printed editions): Marcaria was printer for most of the books and may be considered the publisher of some; for others, he was in partnership with Rabbi Joseph Ottolenghi of nearby Cremona. The activities of Marcaria and Ottolenghi were undertaken with the permission of the Prince-Bishop of Trent, Cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo …

Shlomo Lutzker's Introduction To Magid Devarav Le-Ya'akov, Moshe Rosman
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
ABSTRACT: This presentation analyzes Shlomo Lutzker's Introduction to Magid Devarav Le-Ya'akov as a key source of information on the process of formation and publication of early hasidic books and the activities of printers and aditors. It also bears on the questions of whether there existed "hasidic publishers" and how it might be possible to identify a "hasidic book".
This presentation is for the following text(s):

A Publisher In Service Of His Readers: Prefaces To Amsterdam 1711 Edition Of The Tsene Rene, Shlomo Berger
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
The Amsterdam 1711 edition of the Tsene Rene is a particularly interesting because it contains prefaces that include allusions to and discussions of Yiddish texts and book production, the roles of publishers and the envisaged demands of readers. It enables us to determine and evaluate the status of books with the early modern Ashkenazi culture.
This presentation is for the following text(s):

Website Compliance With Ethical Guidelines By Psychologists And Professional Counselors, Joseph Yazvac Iii
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is currently very little research investigating the ethical practice of etherapy, and none that distinguishes between types of therapists in terms of their compliance with ethical codes pertaining to e-therapy. The American Psychological Association does not have ethical standards specific to the provision of e-therapy but the American Counseling Association does. The purpose of this study was to assess differences in ethical compliance for e-therapy websites sponsored by psychologists and e-therapy websites sponsored by professional counselors. Specific ethics codes for the practice of e-therapy of the American Counseling Association were used to generate an assessment instrument, which served as …
