Shenoute’S Feast: Monastic Ideology, Lay Piety, And The Discourse Of Food In Late Antiquity, Dana Robinson Jan 2017

Shenoute’S Feast: Monastic Ideology, Lay Piety, And The Discourse Of Food In Late Antiquity, Dana Robinson

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

In the fourth and fifth centuries c.e., food provides a dense and value-laden web of meaning which lay and monastic Christians use to negotiate their identity with the culture at large, but also vis-à-vis each other. The works of Shenoute of Atripe are a valuable source of insight into the workings of this discourse in a Christian community, since they embrace both internal monastic instruction (the Canons) and public sermons (the Discourses). The first half of this paper constructs Shenoute’s ideology of the Christian meal in terms of the larger discourse of food in which it participates. He …

Columbanus And The Easter Controversy: Theological, Social And Political Contexts (Chapter 6 In The Irish In Early Medieval Europe), Caitlin Corning Jan 2016

Columbanus And The Easter Controversy: Theological, Social And Political Contexts (Chapter 6 In The Irish In Early Medieval Europe), Caitlin Corning

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

Excerpt: "Determining the correct date for the celebration of Easter involves important theological and practical considerations. Since there was no universal agreement about the manner in which these considerations should be addressed it is not surprising that the dating ofEaster became contentious, causing controversy and conflict in the church for centuries. When Columbanus (d. 615) arrived on the Continent in the late sixth century, he brought with him an older system for dating Easter that was different from the one in use in Rome or the Merovingian churches. Within a few years, the two sides were debating questions of authority …

The Thirty Years' War: Examining The Origins And Effects Of Corpus Christianum's Defining Conflict, Justin Mcmurdie May 2014

The Thirty Years' War: Examining The Origins And Effects Of Corpus Christianum's Defining Conflict, Justin Mcmurdie

Seminary Masters Theses

The following thesis is an examination of the Thirty Years’ War. This conflict, from 1618-1648 in the “Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation,” was the culminating conflict of the Reformation era and set the stage for the modern world. Much scholarly debate in recent years has centered on whether or not the Thirty Years’ War was a “religious” conflict. A great deal of recent work has tended to minimize or discount the religious element of the conflict. This current thesis attempts to engage this debate and to argue that the war’s origins did indeed lie in religious concerns. This …

Did America Have A Christian Founding?, Mark David Hall Jan 2011

Did America Have A Christian Founding?, Mark David Hall

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

"Did America have a Christian Founding? This disputed question, far from being only of historical interest, has important implications for how we conceive of the role of religion in the American republic. Mark David Hall begins by considering two popular answers to the query— “Of course not!” and “Absolutely!”—both of which distort the Founders’ views. After showing that Christian ideas were one of the important intellectual influences on the Founders, he discusses three major areas of agreement with respect to religious liberty and church–state relations at the time of the Founding: Religious liberty is a right and must be protected; …

Teaching History As Creational Development, Paul Otto

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

My object in this article is to share ways that my faith commitments are mamfest m my teaching of history It should be made clear from the outset that I currently teach, and have taught, at explicitly faith-based institutions—George Fox University and Dordt College—and this fact doubtless shapes what I have done m my classes, and how I have done it First, I will briefly summarize my understanding of history m terms of creational development and the exercise of human cultural formative power and its results Then I will share a few ways my pedagogy reflects this understanding or is …
