Charles Edouard Jeanneret, commonly known as Le Corbusier, was one of the most outstanding architects of this century and possibly its most seminal urban designer. Born in 1887 in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Le Corbusier moved to Paris in 1916 and later became a French citizen. He died in 1965 while swimming off the coast of Cote d'Azur.

Some two hundred miles north of Toronto on the road to Burk's Falls, just outside Magnetawan, is an old farm field, shoulder-high in hay. Tucked back in a corner of the field, barely visible from the road, is an old post archway. It is closed with pagewire fencing. Inside the fence, wild fern has all but totally obscured a pioneer graveyard, a memorial to Swiss settlers who helped to open up the country south of Lake Nipissing. Nicoulin's work on the making of Nova Friburgo is a thoroughly researched and well-presented study, but somewhat limited in its interpretive dimensions. Manuscript materials in Swiss federal, state, and village archives have been extensively consulted as well as archives in Rio de Janeiro and in Nova Friburgo. The author has furthermore perused a great many printed sources all of which enabled him to reconstruct the story of an emigration which in 1819 involved over 2000 Swiss and had the active support of Swiss governments as well as of Brazilian authorities. On Saturday, December 1, 1973, some thirty members attended the 1973 annual meeting of the SAHS at the Swiss Town House on 35 West 67th Street in New York City. It was a clear, sunny say which had made travelling pleasant and smooth. The Swiss Town House proved again to be a hospitable place to meet in, especially due to the expert hose, Mr. John Brunner. When the business meeting had closed somewhat earlier than anticipated, Mr. Brunner had quickly some excellent Swiss wine served, and also the luncheon was first-rate as to food and service.

The man elected as president of the Swiss American Historical Society in the spring of 1940 was Emil J. Schaefer. Born in 18 92 in Zurich- Hongg, he came to the United States as a 19 year old youth who just had finished the Gymnasium n Winterthur. He attended several colleges in the Midwest and earned a master 's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The decade of the 1930's was a difficult time for most Americans with the depression blighting untold families and individuals. The Swiss Americans, like other ethnic groups, had an additional cause for concern inasmuch as the decade was characterized by isolationism in foreign relations and a wave of nativism at home. The introduction of immigration quotas in the 1920's indicated that the United States prepared itself to put obstacles in the way of free access to the country. Only some 130 years ago Chicago, now a sprawling metropolis of the Midwest, began to grow from a small prairie seaport on lake Michigan into a thriving American city. Many Swiss immigrants followed the trail of the thousands of newcomers to the emerging town who either hailed from the Atlantic seaport states and from Midwestern rural communities or who had crossed the Atlantic to become settlers of the white man's New world. By 1870 the city counted some 298,977 inhabitants, at the same date some 1,435 Swiss had settled in Cook County, many of whom lived in Chicago.

The New York chapter of the SAHS under the able leadership of De. I. de Kosinsky, Treasurer, and P. R. Gelzer, Second Vice-President, organized a spring meeting which took place in the residence of Ambassador and Mrs. P. H. Aubaret, Saturday afternoon, May 13. the invitation was accepted by about sixty members and friends from the greater New York area who were attracted by the generous gesture of the Swiss Consul General, as well as by the timeliness of the program.

One of the recurrent themes in the long history of U.S.-Swiss relations has to do with the reciprocal interest in each other's educational systems. Americans went to visit the schools and institutes of Pestalozzi and Fellenberg in the early 19th century and returned full with ideas of how to improve schools over here. They had successors who time and again hoped to get inspiration for their own work by studying how the Swiss went about the important task of educating the young.

This past summer the Swiss American Historical Society lost the services of its Secretary and Newsletter Editor, Lukas F. Burckhardt. Dr. Burckhardt, after many years as Labor and Cultural Counselor at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, was promoted to become chief of the Chultural Section of the Swiss Political Department in Bern and he felt that he, therefore, hadto relinquish his SAHS offices. Knowing better than anybody else how much Lukas Burckhardt meant for ouor Society, I was very reluctant to accept his resignation, yet in the end could do nothing but honor his wishes.
