Danish Immigrant Contributions To Mainstream American Children's Literature, 1867-1983: An Overview, Karen Nelson Hoyle

On the children's book scene in the United States, Hans Christian Andersen is the dominant figure among Danish authors. More than 800 translated editions of his books exist in the English language. The perennial strength of H.C. Andersen should not, however, draw attention from the notable contributions of Danish immigrants in the United States. Thirteen Danish immigrant authors and illustrators have contributed to mainstream American children's literature in the genres of picture book, historical fiction, and non-fiction from 1867 to the present. Excluded for consideration are translations from Danish, the religious press, the immigrant press, and periodical literature. Trade houses …

Few Danes in America have been as influential in Scandinavian American life as Claus Laurits Clausen. From his arrival in Wisconsin in 1843 until his retirement in Minnesota more than forty years later, C. L. Clausen was a central figure in the life of Norwegians and Danes throughout the United States of America. H. Fred Swansen' s biography remains the standard work on Clausen's life in English, but an earlier biography in Danish contains important documentary material, and there are numerous biographical sketches, including a particularly sensitive one by Clausen's son-in-law, Svein Strand.

The thesis focuses on Germany's Mexican policies from 1911 to 1917, with particular attention given to the connection of these policies to political relations between the United States and Germany and between the United States and Mexico. The paper also attempts to place German activities in Mexico within the context of Germany's desire to promote its political and economic interests on a worldwide scale. Although some unpublished sources were consulted, the account relies mostly on published documents, memoirs, and secondary sources for its factual basis.

The primary purpose of this study is to survey specific manifestations of Kazakh nationalism in the Gorbachev era and ask what provoked a seemingly cooperative people to exert their nationalist sentiment. The two principal forms examined are the passage of the Kazakh Language Law in 1989, and the emergence of informal groups and alternative political parties in Kazakhstan.

The nationalism that was expressed by Kazakhs in the Gorbachev era was a resumption of the nationalism that was suspended or suppressed during seventy years of Soviet rule. The December 1986 demonstration in Alma-Ata irreparably altered ethnic relations in the republic and …

A former Danish carpenter and farmer, Niels Madsen, his wife, Anna, and their six children, aged 15 to 3 years, were among the passengers on board the America wooden paddle-steamer "Northern Light" when the ship on May 1, 1869, left Copenhagen. Niels Andreas Kierkegaard, born April 13, 1809, was apparently destined by his father, a merchant in Copenhagen, to take over the family business. His two brothers were top students in the University-bound curriculum, but Niels was steered into business. The Bridge

The "prairie" was a powerful symbol in Chicago around the tum of the present century. Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright and others used it to characterize a new type of architecture with strong horizontal lines and free flowing interior spaces. Poets like Vachel Lindsay and Carl Sandburg sang the glories of a new breed of prairie man and woman, growing like Abraham Lincoln out of the environment of the American heartland. Among landscape artists, Jens Jensen was the leading figure of the Prairie School. He designed "prairie parks" for the city of Chicago, and landscapes appropriate to the new "prairie …

Note: Seventy years after his death the Danish-born writer Carl Hansen (1860-1916) remains, among those who read Danish, a highly valued interpreter of the immigrant experience in the United States. Hansen was the subject of two articles in earlier issue (Vol. 2:1, 1979) of The Bridge.
