Genius And Monologue, Ken Frieden

Books

"Genius is the intellectual obsession of our time," Ken Frieden writes, "and monologue is one symptom of the disorder." From ancient, spiritual conceptions of genius to modern notions of the extraordinary mind, Frieden traces associated philosophic and literary expressions of inspiration and individuality.

Frieden juxtaposes the evolving forms of genius with traditions of monologue in pre-Shakespearean and Shakespearean drama, Romantic poetry, and nineteenthand twentieth-century fiction. He delineates the linguistic mechanisms that have shaped the dominant ideology of genius, showing that while literary monologues typically break the conventions of dialogue, aethetics ultimately identifies originality with deviance and madness. Alvin C. York went out on a routine patrol an ordinary, unknown American doughboy of the First World War. He came back from no-man’s-land a hero. In a brief encounter on October 8, 1918, during the Argonne offensive, York had killed 25 German soldiers and, almost singlehandedly, effected the capture of 132 others. Returning to the United States the following spring, he received a tumultuous public welcome and a flood of offers from businessmen eager to capitalize on his acclaimed feat. But York, true to his character, went quietly back to his home in the Tennessee mountains, where he spent …

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

John Wilson Bengough (1851-1923) was Canada’s premier editorial cartoonist of the nineteenth century. Influenced by the artistic techniques and fame of American cartoonist Thomas Nast, Bengough began the publication in 1873 of Grip, a comic weekly that featured his own editorial cartoons. The journal achieved instant recognition and fame with a series of biting cartoons that put Sir John A. macdonald’s Conservatives on public trial during the Pacific Railway Scandal of 1873. Grip went on to enjoy a twenty year print run during which Bengough established a tradition for editorial cartooning in Canada. Grip’s popularity also launched Bengough upon a …
