It's odd when you leave the United States and go off for a vacation and have very little contact with the sports scene for over three weeks. Baseball, which is a daily obsession nearly disappears from your life, with only an occasional glimpse at scores in the international Herald Tribune or USA Today, and a few highlights hear and there on CNN.

There were times when I thought I was watching the World Wrestling Federation. All that was missing was a gold lamay cape worn by Patrick Ewing, cowboy boots and stetson for Charles Oakley, or designer trunks with matching shoes for John Starks. As for Pat Riley he has always looked the part.

Baseball's All-Star Game is coming up on Tuesday in Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, one of the old style cookie-cutter ballparks of the early 60's. Although the concept of an All-Star game dates back to 1858 and a game between all-star teams from Brooklyn and New York, it was sixty-one years ago that the first modern all-star game was held, July 6, 1933.

As the station went off the air to increase power one of the biggest stories in college sport was coming out of Tallahassee by way of Sports Illustrated. It was not the swimsuit issue, but Florida State University must have felt nearly naked as the story of players taking payoffs from agents became public.

During the 1980's, the concept of an all-Black male academy was strongly pushed as a panacea for the seemingly systematic, scholastic downfall of Black males in secondary institutions. Though said academies have received strong community support, opposition against them has also been equally staunch. All-Black male academies have also fallen under question because of their supposed discrimination against females and the belief that their existence would return the system of education in the United States to segregation.

More than four million Italian immigrants entered the United States between 1880 and 1920, a number greater than any other ethnic group during America's peak immigration years. From 1900 to 1910 alone, more than two million Italians flowed through American ports. This thesis examines the great Italian migration to and settlement in the United States, focusing on one of America's strongest and most vibrant ethnic communities, Boston’s Italian North End.

The vast majority of Italian immigrants were peasants from agrarian Southern Italy, seeking refuge in America from nearly unbearable conditions in their homeland. They were mostly young, usually poor and …

Is there a sinister force stalking Orlando? Are the taxpayers of the city about to be relieved of some of their excess cash? Are the citizens of Orlando ready to turn over $30M to $40M to Al Davis along with a piece of real estate, and another $4M to the DeVos clan? These indeed are worthy charities, and the people of Orlando through their representatives should support these charitable enterprises. Orlando has long been noted for its support of public welfare for the worthy, the oppressed and the downtroden.

For the past six weeks or so I have been looking with some curiosity at the patch being worn by major league baseball players this season. It is the logo of major league baseball with an inscription reading "125th Anniversary."

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. This past week Wayne Gretzky became the career scoring leader in the National Hockey League. For fifteen seasons now The Great One has been the dominant figure in hockey and in sport. But to call him The Great One is to grossly understate his significance. Wayne Gretzky holds sixty NHL records and now has added one more to the list, as he has broken Gordie Howe's record in over 600 less games, and eleven fewer seasons than Howe.

It was a week to remember in Dallas. Even by Texas standards this story was as big and slimy as they come. Jimmy Johnson was gone, Barry Switzer had arrived, and Jerry Jones had just swapped the two biggest egos in football coaching for one another. In a week when those looking for signs of the end of the world saw Jimmy Johnson leave Dallas and the Gators make the final four, major league baseball also presents a new face. The 1994 season opens with three divisions in each league, producing three divisional champions, plus one wild card team, and an extra tier of playoffs. The compelling force in this change is television, which can only make money on playoffs and the World Series and loses money during the regular season.
