How long has it been now? Two months. Three months. Does anyone remember exactly when the baseball strike began? For the record it was August 12, 1994, some three months and a week ago. Then in early September came word that the season was gone, and the playoffs and World Series were down the drain.

It is the twenty-fifth Anniversary of Monday Night Football. The other networks laughed when ABC announced it was going to take NFL football into prime time. Who would watch? By Monday everyone was suffering from football burnout what with the College games on Saturday, and the double network double-headers on Sunday. It just wouldn't work.

It was about 4:30 on Saturday Afternoon. ABC television and the local affiliate Channel Nine was showing the Michigan-Penn State game as a footnote to the Gator loss. Then suddenly there was a Channel Nine Special Report. Had Aristide been assassinated as he arrived in Haiti or had Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait? Neither. This was a much more serious matter.

The National Football League is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this season, and unlike the alleged 125th Anniversary of Baseball, this anniversary has some basis in history. First named the American Football Association and founded in 1920 by sportswriter Joseph Carr, the league changed its name to the National Football League in 1922.

Tennis In Decline In The 90'S, Richard C. Crepeau

The U.S. Open Tennis Championships began its two-week run in New York on Monday. Most of the big names of the past two decades are gone. On the women's side Martina Navratolova is in semi-retirement, Monica Seles has never come back from the knifing of a year and a half ago, and earlier stars like Chris Everet and Billie Jean King are long since departed. On the men's side Jimmy Connors, the long-time mainstay of New York bad-manners-tennis has packed it in, while the great McEnroe-Connors, and McEnroe-Borg rivalries are history while Johnny Mac is now doing TV commentary.

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. For the Orlando Magic it looked like the biggest development since the signing of the Shaq. To be able to pick up Horace Grant as a free agent without giving up Dennis Scott on waivers, and only losing Scott Skiles and a first round pick in 1996 is truly amazing. John Gabriel, or whoever engineered this deal, seemed on the way to canonization, having performed a certifiable miracle.
