Section III: The Medieval Church

The claims to universality advanced by the medieval Church brought it into close relationship with an ancient human institution: the state. Especially after the fourth century, when it was first recognized and then given status as the only legal religious body, it was necessary for the Church to formulate a set of poliyical principles, comparable to those for economic activity, which could then be applied to the many and continuing relations between church and state. The general outline of these principles was completed by 500 and was transmitted to the Middle Ages. [excerpt]

Theses and Dissertations

This study was proposed to analyze articles referring to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the national magazine press. A "symbol coding" form of content analysis was used, in which each pertinent word or name was categorized, counted as indulgent or deprivatory and classified as to the thematic nature of the text.

A Study Of The Speaking Of B. H. Roberts, Utah's Blacksmith Orator, R. Wayne Pace Jan 1957

A Study Of The Speaking Of B. H. Roberts, Utah's Blacksmith Orator, R. Wayne Pace

Theses and Dissertations

The Mormon Church has continued to grow in size and prominence since 1830 when Joseph Smith announced the formation of this new Christian organization.

The struggle to gain recognition for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) among the body of Christian groups has been a vigorous and energetic one. Out of the band of closely knit followers have developed leaders who were particularly gifted at proclaiming and defending the beliefs of this faith.

One of the men who was foremost in advancing the views of the Mormon people during the years 1880 to 1930 was Brigham Henry …

George Edward Percy Careless: His Contributions To The Musical Culture Of Utah And The Significance Of His Life And Works, Howard Hoggan Putnam

Theses and Dissertations

Through study of the conditions of the past one is often able to appreciate the present a great deal more. Particularly does this seem true when one looks into the early musical activities in our State of Utah. Most people are aware of the great amount of musical activities existing at the present time in Utah, but many fail to stop and realize the background of work and effort applied to bring these musical experiences before the public. Many fail to realize the pioneering work done by individuals to advance music to its present degree of performance. Names such as …

Thomas B. Marsh: Physician To The Church, Walter C. Lichfield

Theses and Dissertations

Thomas B. Marsh was president of the first quorum of Twelve Apostles of this last dispensation of the Gospel.

He came into the Church after having been lead west from Massachusetts, to the Prophet at Palmyra by the Spirit, having previously separated himself from all the then existing creeds as had many other early stalwarts.

The Development Of Cooperative Enterprises In Cache Valley 1865-1900, Joseph Carl Felix

Theses and Dissertations

As one studies the history of Cache Valley, he becomes increasingly aware of the presence of church-sponsored cooperative stores, farms, and mills, in every community in the valley. True, there are only scattered remains of a once rather extensive movement, but there is enough evidence to cause one to wonder what influence the cooperative enterprises had in the settlement of Cache Valley. This study has been made to determine the extent of this contribution and to preserve as much information as possible concerning a very important phase of the settlement days in Cache Valley.

This study includes only the period …

Latter-Day Saint Servicemen In The Philippine Islands: A Historical Study Of Their Religious Activities And Influences Resulting In The Official Organization Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Philippines, Lowell Eliason Call

Theses and Dissertations

Though generally unheard of in the Western world and the United States prior to the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Filipino people have made some remarkable contributions to world leadership and world history. Frequently they have been considered a pagan and an ignorant people, although in objectively observing them one finds such a belief unfounded and even the reverse of that to be true. Progress which the republic has made during the last fifty years, since being liberated to develop liberties in religion, politics, and education, is phenomenal, even when compared with the United States period of evolution to her …

A Study Of The Nature Of And The Significance Of The Changes In The Revelations As Found In A Comparison Of The Book Of Commandments And Subsequent Editions Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Melvin Joseph Petersen Jan 1955

A Study Of The Nature Of And The Significance Of The Changes In The Revelations As Found In A Comparison Of The Book Of Commandments And Subsequent Editions Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Melvin Joseph Petersen

Theses and Dissertations

An observation of literature extant regarding the revelations accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as being divinely given through Joseph Smith, discloses that the field has not been probed very thoroughly. Many are the sermons and discourses preached from the pulpit by exegetes of Mormonism vindicating the book of Doctrine and Covenants as being authentic. Few, however, have made a study of the history, origin, and development of this book.

From outside of the church criticisms have arisen concerning certain changes, additions, and omissions made in the revelations as first written by Joseph Smith. When confronted …

History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway Jan 1953

History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway

Theses and Dissertations

The Indian agent, the trapper, or the citizens of small Iowa townships were undoubtedly startled to see such a large movement of people and wagons across the state of Iowa. It was the winter and early spring of 1846. The onlooker would have seen men, women, and children muffled against the wintry blast, walking or riding in covered wagons and lesser vehicles. Somehow these people were different from the occasional companies bound for points West. Many were ill equipped. Many had a look of gentility, or as the frontiersman might say, a "citified look." They kept to themselves and often …

Eighty Years Of Music In St. George, Utah, 1861-1941, Reed Paul Thompson Jan 1952

Eighty Years Of Music In St. George, Utah, 1861-1941, Reed Paul Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study has been to trace the development of music in St. George, Utah from its settlement in 1861 to 1941, an eighty-year period of much change. It has been an attempt, therefore, to show the musical heritage which this city now enjoys.
