Japanese Evacuation From The West Coast: Final Report, John L. Dewitt

A 1943 U.S. government report detailing the enforced internment of west-coast Japanese-Americans during World War II. The Japanese internment began in February, 1942, two months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Executive Order 9066 signed by President Roosevelt forcibly committed innocent Japanese-Americans to isolated internment camps in rural California, Utah and other midwestern states. Conditions were inadequate, overcrowding and unsanitary also lacking education and medical care. In 1945 the Supreme Court declared the internments illegal. A final report submitted by General J.L. DeWitt in April, 1942 utilized maps, photographs and other visuals to justify the internments. The report was …

Some Correspondence Of The Maine Commissioners Regarding The Webster-Ashburton Treaty, William L. Lucey S.J.

History Department Faculty Scholarship

This article commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, which resolved a boundary dispute between the United States and British North American colonies (presently Maine and New Brunswick). The article includes exerpts of correspondence between the four Maine commissioners who agreed to a compromise. These letters were preserved by Edward Kavanaugh, the first Catholic U.S. Congressman elected from New England, and provide a glimpse into the diplomatic and peaceful resolution of an Early American territorial disagreement.

The Windsor, Essex, and Lake Shore Interurban was incorporated in 1901. It became the Windsor, Essex, and Lake Shore Rapid Railway Company in 1907. In 1929 it was acquired by local municipalities and became the Windsor, Essex and Lake Shore Electric Railway Association. The municipalities were the City of Windsor, the towns of Kingsville, Leamington and Essex, and the townships of Sandwich West, Sandwich East, Sandwich South, Gosfield North, and Gosfield South. These are the minutes of meetings and the by-laws for the last 5 years of its operations. It folded on September 15th, 1932.
