Tennis In Transition, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past few months, I have written this column only a few times, the last being late July. This has not been because I have had nothing to comment upon. Rather the summer has been filled with travel, some to escape the heat of Florida. Over the past few days, I have been trying to decide how to restart. Many topics have shot by over the past three months, any number of which could now be subjects for this column. Not the least of these are the passing of two giants of contemporary American sport: Bill Russell in basketball …

Living On The Edge: Transgression, Exclusion, And Persecution In The Middle Ages, Delfi I. Nieto-Isabel, Laura Miquel Milian Sep 2022

Living On The Edge: Transgression, Exclusion, And Persecution In The Middle Ages, Delfi I. Nieto-Isabel, Laura Miquel Milian

Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

This volume addresses the widespread medieval phenomenon of transgression as both a result of and the cause for the exclusion and persecution of those who were considered different. It is widely accepted that the essence of a manuscript cannot be fully grasped without studying its marginalia. Glosses sit on the margins of the text and clarify it, adding a whole new dimension to it and becoming an inextricable part of its content. Similarly, no society can be fully understood without knowledge of what lies on its margins, for the outliers of any given culture provide us with just as much …

Rethinking Ethical Questions In Life-History Interview Research, Anne Rothe Sep 2022

Rethinking Ethical Questions In Life-History Interview Research, Anne Rothe

The Qualitative Report

Having interviewed Germans who emigrated to Israel and, in most cases, converted to Judaism, I experienced a paralyzing sense of ethical conflict when I began analyzing the first order discourse my participants and I had co-constructed to transform it into the second-order discourse of research publications. So, I set out to rethink the ethics of life-history interview research. My quest into our ethical responsibilities began with rule-based deontological and consequentialist ethics and the guidelines in the social sciences they inform. It led me to reconsider such core notions as informed consent, privacy, and risk-benefit analysis. I came to realize that …

Minding The Gap: Computing Ethics And The Political Economy Of Big Tech, Ioannis Stavrakakis, Damian Gordon, Paul John Gibson, Dympna O'Sullivan, Anna Becevel

Articles

In 1988 Michael Mahoney wrote that “[w]hat is truly revolutionary about the computer will become clear only when computing acquires a proper history, one that ties it to other technologies and thus uncovers the precedents that make its innovations significant” (Mahoney, 1988). Today, over thirty years after this quote was written, we are living right in the middle of the information age and computing technology is constantly transforming modern living in revolutionary ways and in such a high degree that is giving rise to many ethical considerations, dilemmas, and social disruption. To explore the myriad of issues associated with the …

Taiwan And The Pacific Islands: Exploring The Green/Blue Possibilities, Fabrizio Bozzato

Green Humanities: A Journal of Ecological Thought in Literature, Philosophy & the Arts

[First paragraph] The Pacific Island nations face unique developmental challenges and vulnerability issues that, in some cases, threaten their very existence. The Islands’ political and civil society leaders have recently embraced a vision of inclusive and sustainable development for remodeling their countries’ ‘brown economies’ into people-centered green/blue economies fostering poverty eradication. However, moving to a new socio-economic paradigm is a goal that the Pacific Island countries cannot achieve alone. They need reliable partners with green-tech capability and innovative aid policies. Taiwan is potentially the ideal partner for building a new framework for Pacific islanders and enabling them to reach for …
