Through the use of primary source documents, especially deeds, wills, estate inventories, and historic newspapers, this report attempts to trace the lives of the original group of enslaved men,
women, and children who lived at the Davenport House, including Nancy, Bella, Mary, Deeping, Tom, Ned, Ann, Davy, Isaac, Jacob, Jack, Polly, and Peggy prior to their entry into the Davenport House. There is much to be interpreted from seemingly impersonal information such as location and previous owners, as well as from new resources heretofore unconsulted including burial and jail records, ship manifests, later deed records, and wills. At the time that this thesis is printed, we are reminded of the tumultuous relationship between North Korea and the United States every day. If we follow the mainstream news regularly, it seems like we are on a steady path to war. Ultimately, this paper is centered around the question: what is the best foreign policy strategy for both countries to achieve respective goals, without descending into armed conflict? Specifically, I evaluated the failures of the last three U.S. Presidents and used their shortcomings to explain limitations in current foreign policy strategy. Newton, though not representative of every abolitionist, was a vital figure in the movement. His influence on Hannah More and William Wilberforce along with his contributions to the Parliamentary hearings made him a key aspect of its success. How he came to fulfill that role was a long and complex journey, both in terms of his religion and his understanding of slavery. The Weimar period witnessed an unprecedented prosperity of art and culture, with tremendous advancements in the fields of literature, the visual arts, and film. Rape and other forms of sexual violence have been used against civilian populations since the advent of armed conflict. However, recent scholarship within the last few decades proves that rape is not a byproduct of war or a result of transgressions by a few “bad apples,” rather, rape and sexual violence are used as strategic, systematic, and calculated tools of war, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. Rape has also been used as a means of preventing future generations of children of “undesirable” groups from being born. Scholars point out a tension between racial justice and disability rights activism. Although racial minorities are more likely to become disabled than whites, both disability activism and the historiography of disability politics tends tend to focus on the experience and achievements of whites. This article examines how disability rights activists of the 1970s sought to build a united movement of all people with disabilities and explains why these efforts were unable to overcome cleavages predicated on race. This chapter focuses on the design approach used in the self-reflexive finale of the mobile augmented reality history game Jewish Time Jump: New York. In the finale, the iOS device itself and the player using it are implicated in the historical moment and theme of the game. The author-designer-researcher drew from self-reflexive traditions in theater, cinema, and nonmobile games to craft the reveal of the connection between the mobile device and the history that the learners were studying. The Johannes Larson family is part of the settlement in southern Juneau County which became known as the Suldal Norwegian-American Settlement (see Onsager, Lawrence, The Juneau County Bygdebok, Digital Commons, Andrews University, https://digitalcommons.andrews.edu/pubs/146/). Suldal is a rural district in Rogaland County in western Norway. The connection with Suldal, Norway began in 1850 with the coming of Johannes Larson’s great uncle, Knut Ormson, to settle in Lindina Township, Juneau County, Wisconsin. Chain migration by kinship groups followed. In 1864, Johannes Larson’s grandfather, Lars Osmundson, a renter on the Bakken subfarm under Guggedal and a former school teacher, led a group of …

教育被視為培養人才和推動社會流動的主要途徑，香港的教育發展源遠流長，始於宋朝已有相關的文字記載。直至晚清時期，香港的教育制度與中國各省縣無異，民辦學塾是主要的教育場所。香港開埠後，由華人及宗教團體籌辦的學校紛紛成立，中西式教育並行發展，而港英政府亦逐步承擔教育策劃者的角色。戰後政府分階段發展教育，並以普及化作為發展方向，成功推行九年免費教育。此後，政府不斷增加對教育的投放，市民的教育水平持續提高，為香港社會及經濟發展提供了良好的基礎。

「穿膠花」、「剪線頭」是不少老一輩香港人的集體回憶。1950年代，韓戰禁運、內地移民等因素促使香港工業起飛，使這個轉口港搖身一變成為世界工廠。當中「紡織及製衣業」、「塑膠及玩具業」、「鐘錶業」和「電子業」發展尤為突出，獲得了「四大工業」的美譽。這些港製產品價廉物美，遠銷歐美市場，取得了驕人成績，使「香港製造」品牌蜚聲國際。然而隨著內地在1978年推出改革開放政策，香港工廠相繼北移，四大工業亦逐步轉型。本展覽將介紹四大工業的發展，重溫香港製造業的黃金歲月。

現時不少香港人都熱愛參與足球和游泳等運動，原來許多體育項目最早是由英國人傳入。自1842年香港成為英國殖民地後，各種西式體育項目逐漸引入香港。起初，體育活動只是洋人的消遣娛樂。直至清末民初，中國屢遭西方列強侵略，人們提倡以「體育救國」，體育運動才開始在華人間流行。1960年代以後，政府著手推廣體育事務，不但加快興建各種運動設施，更投放大量資源培育人才，使體育運動愈加普及，香港的運動健兒在不同項目都有出色表現。

中英街是香港最具特殊意義的一條街。嚴格而言，中英街並不算一條街，它是港深兩地接壤的禁區中的一處邊界，只是中間沒有鐵絲網或圍牆之類的分界物而已。香港只擁有這條街一半的管轄權，另一半屬於深圳。冷戰時期，中英街是分隔世界兩大政治陣營的主要邊界之一；一邊是社會主義的中國，另一邊則由資本主義的英國管治。不過，中英街的邊界線只有疏落的幾座界石，兩邊分屬中港兩地的居民可以自由往來。中國改革開放之初，中英街是內地居民都期望一到的地方。最熱鬧時，一天就有近十萬人湧到這裏購物。本展覽將帶你走過中英街近百年潮起潮的變遷。

This thesis documents an investigation that explored the use of narrative and material culture to present aspects of women’s lives from eighteenth-century Cork city to a twenty-first century museum audience. There were two objectives of this research. The first was to create a catalogue of elements from material culture through which these women’s lives would be revealed. The second was to use narrative to make this information accessible and engaging.

This essay reviews four books on the Progressive Era, and draws lessons from those books to help explain contemporary political events. It explores topics such as proportional representation, efficiency of service delivery, business-driven reforms, and voter heterogeneity. All of these books provide a meaningful understanding of cities in the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s) and beyond. However, the issues and lessons from a century ago still challenge us today, so we may be in a new “Gilded Age” and headed toward yet another era of progressivism.

The character of Moses as seen within the Old Testament is perhaps the most dynamic and powerful character within the biblical text. Continually throughout the Exodus narrative, Moses faces opportunities for growth and development that lead him toward becoming the archetype for leadership. Moses’ journey is rife with choice. Though many would place Yahweh at the forefront of the narrative, it is truly Moses whom the audience witnesses generating change, making decisions, and even influencing the decisions of his God.
