Urban Information Specialists And Interpreters: An Emerging Radical Vision Of Reference For The People, 1967–1973, Haruko Yamauchi

Publications and Research

In the post-War on Poverty years, certain quarters of the U.S. library profession expressed a growing desire to enable librarians to beome more relevant and responsive to low-income, primarily African American, urban communities. This article traces how ideas and trends shifted within library discourse over roughly a decade starting in the mid-1960s, and offers an overview of the urban librarian training programs that emerged in the early 1970s. The latter half of the article, based on archives of internal and external correspondence, funder reports, and other primary documents, examines in greater detail the case of three related projects that were …

“Remember Them Not For How They Died”: American Memory And The Challenger Accident, Elizabeth F. Koele

Theses and Dissertations

The sudden explosion of the Challenger space shuttle seventy-three seconds into its launch in 1986 not only brought the American space program to a halt for almost three years, but also firmly imprinted itself upon public memory. The Challenger accident, preceded by the Apollo 1 and later followed by the Columbia, became a unique event to memorialize. Witnessed by people of all ages due to the presence of schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, the impact of the tragedy was exacerbated by the media storm which followed. In the months and years after the accident, a plethora of monuments, memorials, and museum exhibits …

South Korean Nationalism And The Legacy Of Park Chung Hee: How Nationalism Shaped Park’S Agendas And The Future Korean Sociopolitical Landscape, Brandon L. Santos Jan 2018

South Korean Nationalism And The Legacy Of Park Chung Hee: How Nationalism Shaped Park’S Agendas And The Future Korean Sociopolitical Landscape, Brandon L. Santos

Chadron State Graduate Theses

Park Chung Hee (presidential term: 1961-1979) is, arguably, the most significant leader in the Korean Peninsula’s modern history. His governance has many trademark elements that have been thoroughly analyzed. These include his economic plans and violent dealings against his political opposition. One often overlooked variable, however, is the significant traces of early Korean nationalism (1890s-1930s) that defined his regime. Park employed these ideas, although controversial, to completely change a nation that was teetering on the brink of destruction into what is now, one of the most well-known republics in the world – economically, technologically, and culturally. It is important, therefore, …

A Half-Century Of Nebraska Education, Theodore Degner Jan 2018

A Half-Century Of Nebraska Education, Theodore Degner

Undergraduate Research Journal

The pioneers’ journey across Nebraska was rough and ever changing, and the same can be said for the educating of Nebraskans on the state’s history. Since the centennial of Nebraska statehood in 1967, changes to the education of Nebraska history has made students metaphorically traverse over both rough, hilly topics and flat, grassy lessons. These changes can be seen by examining sources from various Nebraska schools dating back to the 1960s. The variety and pace of Nebraska history curriculum change throughout these schools is wild and varied, with periods of little changes between the decades to overarching changes in only …

The Disarming Of The Kearney State College Police Force During The Era Of Civil Rights And Vietnam, Cannon Marchand

Undergraduate Research Journal

Today, the University of Nebraska at Kearney Police Department is one of few unarmed campus police departments in the country. Even so, UNK PD is a certified police department with full police powers. Officers derive their authority from the State of Nebraska as Special Deputy Sheriffs, but only after graduating the State of Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. Officers must also receive continual training each year to maintain certification. With that training and certification, UNK PD officers are obligated to maintain safety and security for all people and property at the university. Members of UNK PD are expected to enforce …

German Hands And Cultural Clay: Martin Luther’S Impact On Germanic Culture, Nathan Mauslein Jan 2018

German Hands And Cultural Clay: Martin Luther’S Impact On Germanic Culture, Nathan Mauslein

Undergraduate Research Journal

The Holy Roman Empire’s history in the heart of Europe was long and turbulent, with strong leaders such as Charlemagne and Otto the Great leaving deep and lasting impressions upon the Germanic people that resided within it. During the Renaissance, like much of the rest of the continent, this period and thereafter would be marked not by a ruler but by a common man. Martin Luther, like the other thinkers of the time, questioned the status quo, analyzing his world and comparing it to the standards set forth by earlier men, in his case the early church. Despite being a …

Blank Pages: The Representation Of Women In High School American History Classes, Brittany Borowski Jan 2018

Blank Pages: The Representation Of Women In High School American History Classes, Brittany Borowski

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this project I analyze the representation of women in high school American history curriculum. with a specials focus on Illinois in particular where this research was completed. While the study of history has evolved greatly, especially in an educational climate that has recently been questioning the best practices to have students successfully engage with the practice and study of history, a gaping whole remains: the representation of women. Women have become a more fundamental part of history at collegiate levels with gender and social history increasing in importance but our high school students are missing out on a history …

The Enslaved Members Of The Davenport Household: Geography, Mobility, And Pre-Davenport House Lived Experiences, Kelly Westfield Jan 2018

The Enslaved Members Of The Davenport Household: Geography, Mobility, And Pre-Davenport House Lived Experiences, Kelly Westfield

History: Graduate Internship Reports (2018-2022)

Through the use of primary source documents, especially deeds, wills, estate inventories, and historic newspapers, this report attempts to trace the lives of the original group of enslaved men,
women, and children who lived at the Davenport House, including Nancy, Bella, Mary, Deeping, Tom, Ned, Ann, Davy, Isaac, Jacob, Jack, Polly, and Peggy prior to their entry into the Davenport House. There is much to be interpreted from seemingly impersonal information such as location and previous owners, as well as from new resources heretofore unconsulted including burial and jail records, ship manifests, later deed records, and wills. For example, Laurel …
