The History And Archaeology Of Cleveland’S Historic Central Market District, Katie Fry, Rachel Daley, Kyle Riordan, Phillip J. Wanyerka Sep 2014

The History And Archaeology Of Cleveland’S Historic Central Market District, Katie Fry, Rachel Daley, Kyle Riordan, Phillip J. Wanyerka

Undergraduate Research Posters 2014

In the early 1990’s archaeologists and historians from Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History explored and excavated an early frontier community located south and east of Public Square in the area known locally as the Central Market District. To most Clevelanders the Central Market District brings to mind the bustle of busy nightclubs or the aging facades of old Cleveland landmarks. Few people, if any, would associate this area with archaeology, let alone remember that from 1796 through the 1860’s this area was home to one of Cleveland’s earliest English and Welsh working-class communities. From the …

Oral History, Mobile Curation, And African American Memory In Cleveland's Fairfax And Glenville Neighborhoods, Benne Christian, Willette Crawford, Julie Gabb, J. Mark Souther, Regennia N. Williams

Undergraduate Research Posters 2014

Fairfax and Glenville are historic neighborhoods with signal importance in the African American community. Too often these neighborhoods are subjected to a simplistic declension narrative that pins their heyday in the 1920s-50s and traces their decline to the convulsive riots of the late 1960s and the subsequent loss of population to the suburbs as middle-class African Americans mirrored “white flight.” Our team conducted over 40 interviews, created story clips, and curated several new sites for the Cleveland Historical website and mobile application. Our research, rooted in oral history, exposed an important post-1968 counternarrative of resilience. Our oral histories demonstrate a …

Aram Goudsouzian '94 And The Meredith March, Robert Weisbrot Sep 2014

Aram Goudsouzian '94 And The Meredith March, Robert Weisbrot

Colby Magazine

James Meredith, an African-American Air Force veteran from Mississippi, did not perish during the civil rights protests of the 1960s, but it was not for lack of trying. On Oct. 1, 1962, Meredith became the first black student to attend the University of Mississippi at Oxford, a death-defying step that impelled President Kennedy to send federal marshals and the U.S. Army to keep racist mobs at bay. On June 5, 1966, following passage of a Voting Rights Act that promised federal protection to blacks seeking the ballot, Meredith began a solitary 220-mile March Against Fear from Memphis, Tenn., through Jackson, …

Book Review: Lee Palmer Wandel, Ed. A Companion To The Eucharist In The Reformation., Amy Nelson Burnett Sep 2014

Book Review: Lee Palmer Wandel, Ed. A Companion To The Eucharist In The Reformation., Amy Nelson Burnett

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The Protestant Reformation may have begun with a controversy over indulgences, but as the sixteenth century wore on, it was disagreement over the Eucharist that made divisions among Christians most visible. This volume provides an introduction to competing understandings of the Eucharist and the consequences for liturgical practice and the arts extending into the eighteenth century. It is self-consciously interdisciplinary, with contributions by theologians, historians, art historians, musicologists, and literary scholars. The volume invites comparison among the Christian traditions, with articles devoted not only to the Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed churches, but also to Anglicans and Anabaptists.

The most traditional …

Managing Free Trade In Early Modern Europe: Institutions, Information, And The Free Port Of Livorno, Corey Tazzara

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

In November 1644, the ship captain Sebastiane Ferro arrived at the Tuscan port of Livomo with a cargo of wine. Even before requesting the pratica of the portentry for the purpose of trade-he asked to receive the exemptions of Livomo, "to be sure that in corning onto land he not be molested either in his person or in his goods for civil debts contracted in foreign states." Technically, these exemptions were restricted to inhabitants of the city. Nonetheless, the Customs Office routinely granted them even to temporary visitors of what was Europe's premier free port, and in this case Customs …

A Comparison Of Teacher Perceptions Of Principal Leadership Actions In Highly Effective Schools As Measured By The Audit Of Principal Effectiveness, Michael Stephens Sep 2014

A Comparison Of Teacher Perceptions Of Principal Leadership Actions In Highly Effective Schools As Measured By The Audit Of Principal Effectiveness, Michael Stephens

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of the principal has never been as multi-faceted or as scrutinized as it is in today’s schools. Principals are looked to for leadership and guidance in the processes, communications, relationships, instructions, and curriculum of today’s schools. Marzano (2013) listed 21 responsibilities of the principal of today. Principals of today wear many hats and are looked to have knowledge and skills beyond the scope of leaders in many other professions. The purpose of the quantitative study was to examine the perceptions of the teachers in Indiana high schools pertaining to their principal’s level of effectiveness as measured by the …
