Camponeses: Brazil’S Peasant Movement In Historical Perspective (1946–2004), Cliff Welch Jul 2009

Camponeses: Brazil’S Peasant Movement In Historical Perspective (1946–2004), Cliff Welch

Peer Reviewed Articles

Comparison of the histories of three leading peasant organizations in the Pontal do Paranapanema region of Brazil—the Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCB) from 1945 to 1964, the Confederação Nacional de Trabalhadores na Agricultura (CONTAG) from 1964 to 1984, and the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem-Terra (MST) from 1984 to 2004—suggests that continuity is as important as change in understanding Brazilian peasant movements. The MST has been considered a “new social movement” in that it has eschewed partisan politics, incorporated families as members rather than just male heads of household, had a national scope and a participatory decision-making structure, and been …

Framing Red Power: The American Indian Movement, The Trail Of Broken Treaties, And The Politics Of Media, Jason A. Heppler Jul 2009

Framing Red Power: The American Indian Movement, The Trail Of Broken Treaties, And The Politics Of Media, Jason A. Heppler

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study explores the relationship between the American Indian Movement (AIM), national newspaper and television media, and the Trail of Broken Treaties caravan in November 1972 and the way media framed, or interpreted, AIM's motivations and objectives. The intellectual and political currents present in the 1960s, including the ideas of Vine Deloria, Jr., and the successes of the Civil Rights Movement, influenced the development of AIM's ideas about militant tactics and the role media played in social movements. AIM entered the national stage with the occupation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in late 1972 and used television broadcasts and …

The Transnational Immigrant-Refugee Experience Of Mexican Yaquis And Canadian Chippewa-Crees In Arizona And Montana, Brenden Rensink Jul 2009

The Transnational Immigrant-Refugee Experience Of Mexican Yaquis And Canadian Chippewa-Crees In Arizona And Montana, Brenden Rensink

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

There are two intriguing examples of indigenous peoples moving in the opposite direction and entering the United States. Running counter to the geographic flows of the exodus narratives, Yaquis from Mexico crossed into Arizona while Chippewas and Crees from Canada entered Montana. Both starting roughly in the 1880s, they sought permanent residence, reservation lands, and federal tribal recognition from the United States. At the end of long struggles for both, their narratives stand as two unique examples of "foreign" Indians granted tribal status and reservations in the United States. Such inbound Native border crossing, the reception or rejection by borderland …

American Friends Service Committee Efforts To Aid Japanese American Citizens During World War Ii, Theodore Wilbur Jul 2009

American Friends Service Committee Efforts To Aid Japanese American Citizens During World War Ii, Theodore Wilbur

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

During World War II countries throughout the world were focused on domination, not only over their neighbors or other enemies further abroad, but over their own people as well. Across the world governments removed civil liberties, imprisoned citizens based on their race or religion, and executions became commonplace for anyone perceived as a threat or simply stood in their way. Throughout all of this the United States seemed like the “white knight” from North America, with a willingness to fight the forces of fascism overseas and the strength and courage to restore peace around the globe. While Americans sacrificed so …

"Adoption Will Determine The Worthiest Successor": Roman Imperial Adoption, Stephen C. Hebert Jul 2009

"Adoption Will Determine The Worthiest Successor": Roman Imperial Adoption, Stephen C. Hebert

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the process by which successors to the Roman Principate were chosen under the Julio-Claudians, Flavians, and Antonine dynasties. Rome extended its hegemony over the Mediterranean and Europe with citizen-farmer legionaries who were loyal to the senate and Roman state. Warfare necessitated the creation of a professional army in which loyalty shifted from that of the state and senate to their respective military commander. Generals such as Sulla and Caesar used their legions to gain power establishing new political precedence from which future ambitious generals built upon, ultimately leading to the end of the Republic and the birth …

The Office Of War Information Vs. The Foreign Nationalities Branch: The Roosevelt Administration And The Poles, Kristen Brooke Archambeau Jul 2009

The Office Of War Information Vs. The Foreign Nationalities Branch: The Roosevelt Administration And The Poles, Kristen Brooke Archambeau

History Theses & Dissertations

The Roosevelt Administration created two information agencies during World War II. The Office of War Information, consisting of a Domestic Branch and Overseas Operations Branch, disseminated information to occupied nations overseas. The Office of Strategic Services' Foreign Nationalities Branch gathered information on the political undercurrents of ethnic groups within the United States and provided information on their possible effects to the administration.

This work seeks to compare the policies of the Overseas Branch of the Office of War information with those of the Foreign Nationalities Branch of the Office of Strategic Services, with the Poles and Polish-Americans as a case …

"In This Time Of Close Trial": An Examination Of Quaker Women's Roles And Political Activism In Philadelphia, September 1777-April 1778, Kimberly Ann Stinedurf

History Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the flexibility of Quaker women's roles in their domestic, sacred, and secular communities. It traces the experiences of a group of Philadelphia Quaker wives and mothers who were forced to support their families when revolutionary authorities arrested and banished their husbands to Virginia during the American Revolution. First, it investigates Quaker women's duties in their households and suggests that gendered responsibilities overlapped significantly for eighteenth-century Quaker men and women. By considering the Quaker husband-wife relationship and the Quaker parent-child relationship, one may conclude that Quaker gendered tasks were not rigid. Chapter Three proposes the idea that Quaker …

Meaning In History? The Young Hegelian's Battle For Historical Meaning And The Resurgence Of Nihilism, Angelo J. Letizia Jul 2009

Meaning In History? The Young Hegelian's Battle For Historical Meaning And The Resurgence Of Nihilism, Angelo J. Letizia

History Theses & Dissertations

After the Reign of Terror, the German thinker J.H. Jacobi saw only two options for Europe: faith in God or nihilism, the belief in nothing. His ultimatum between faith and nihilism for the modern era called into question for some thinkers the entire revolutionary project and its ideals of reason and self government. Two answers to Jacobi's ultimatum were put forth by the German philosophers Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel who rejected both faith and nihilism, and instead crafted a vision of progress, and Arthur Schopenhauer who opted for nihilism. Jacobi's ultimatum, and Hegel and Schopenhauer's answers to it, opened up …

Women And Portraits In Early Modern Europe: Gender, Agency And Identity, Fiona Williamson Jul 2009

Women And Portraits In Early Modern Europe: Gender, Agency And Identity, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The Military Leadership of Matilda of Canossa is an important and welcome book.Although Matilda is readily acknowledged as a pivotal political figure of Italian, reform, and indeed even papal history in the eleventh and early twelfth centuries, she continues to be a rather poorly studied individual, especially in English-languagescholarship, despite the extensive range of primary sources for her life, including manydiplomata, which have recently been critically re-edited. At the same time, almost noattention has been given to Matilda’s military leadership, even though she was credited(and also censured) for her campaigns on behalf of the reforming papacy. Impeccablyresearched and cogently argued, this new …
