Joan Of Arc And The Crusade: Memorizing Medieval Examples To Improve A Renaissance King, Lidia Radi Jan 2008

Joan Of Arc And The Crusade: Memorizing Medieval Examples To Improve A Renaissance King, Lidia Radi

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

In 1518, Le Penser de royal memoire was published in Paris by Guillaume Michel de Tours.2Thanks to the pioneering research conducted by Anne-Marie Lecoq in her monumental book Francois Ier imaginaire, this allegorical text has recently caught the attention of scholars as part of an important moral and political literary production that was published under the reign of King Francis I (r. 1515-1547). Lecoq's study and subsequent works, such as the critical edition of Jean Thenaud's Triomphe des Vertus by Titia Schuurs-Janssen, shed new light on the literature of propaganda addressed to Francis I, the king …

Eastern Orthodoxy Under Siege In The Ottoman Levant: A View From Constantinople In 1821, Theophilus C. Prousis Jan 2008

Eastern Orthodoxy Under Siege In The Ottoman Levant: A View From Constantinople In 1821, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

Research on Imperial Russia’s contacts and connections with Eastern Orthodox communities in the Levant in the early nineteenth century aroused my interest in how Britain, that other edge of Europe, related to the Ottoman Empire during this tumultuous period. Traders, travelers, envoys, consuls, and others registered their impressions and observations in myriad writings, providing historians with a treasure trove for probing the Eastern Question, the nineteenth-century European dilemma of what to do with the surprisingly resilient Ottoman Empire, still possessing strategic lands and vital waterways in the Near East. Russian and British archival and printed sources widen our perspective on …

Citations Of 'Noster' John Pecham In Richard Fleming's Trinity Sunday Sermon: Evidence For The Political Use Of Liturgical Music At The Council Of Constance, Chris L. Nighman

History Faculty Publications

This article examines a sermon for Trinity Sunday that was delivered by Richard Fleming at the Council of Constance in 1417. The author argues that Fleming’s citation of liturgical chant and a homily composed by John Pecham, together with certain external evidence, suggests that he was trying to bolster the reputation of the English Church in order to counter attempts to deprive the English delegation of its status as a ‘nation’ within the council. As such, it constitutes an interesting confluence of pulpit oratory, liturgical music, and ecclesiastical politics at this council.

The Case Of Human Plurality: Hannah Arendt's Critique Of Individualism In Enlightenment And Romantic Thinking, Joshua Luke Yoder Jan 2008

The Case Of Human Plurality: Hannah Arendt's Critique Of Individualism In Enlightenment And Romantic Thinking, Joshua Luke Yoder

LSU Master's Theses

The theme of this thesis is Hannah Arendt’s critique and ultimate rejection of the ideas of individualism developed during the Enlightenment and the Romantic periods. She rejects the Enlightenment notion of the “abstract man,” but equally rejects the notion of Romantic introspection that followed. Such a critique is important to Arendt because she makes human plurality the center for her entire system of thought. Using the French Revolution, Jewish history, and totalitarianism as her examples, Arendt explains the effects of such overtly individualistic thinking in both society and politics. The goal of this thesis is not a comprehensive look at …

To Kill Whites: The 1811 Louisiana Slave Insurrection, Nathan A. Buman Jan 2008

To Kill Whites: The 1811 Louisiana Slave Insurrection, Nathan A. Buman

LSU Master's Theses

Before January 1811, slave rebellion weighed heavily on the minds of white Louisianans. The colonial and territorial history of Louisiana challenged leaders with a diverse and complex social environment that required calculated decision-making and a fair hand to navigate. Racial and ethnic divisions forced officials to tread carefully in order to build a prosperous territory while maintaining control over the slave population. Many Louisianans used slave labor to produce indigo, cotton, and sugarcane along the rivers of south Louisiana, primarily between Baton Rouge and the mouth of the Mississippi River. For nearly a century, Louisianans avoided slave upheaval but after …

How The Mustang Trampled The Luftwaffe: The Role Of The P-51 In The Defeat Of The German Air Force In World War Two, Robert W. Courter Jan 2008

How The Mustang Trampled The Luftwaffe: The Role Of The P-51 In The Defeat Of The German Air Force In World War Two, Robert W. Courter

LSU Master's Theses

The purposes of this study were to trace the evolution of the North American P-51 Mustang as an escort fighter in World War Two and to enumerate the reasons why it played a leading role in the extension of the American strategic bombing campaign into Germany and the ultimate defeat of the German Luftwaffe. The Mustang prototype was built in 1940 in response to a British request for a fighter to help repel German invaders. The original model, powered by an Allison engine and three-bladed propeller, was fast and maneuverable at low altitudes, but its performance deteriorated rapidly at altitudes …

Failed Men: The Postwar Crisis Of Masculinity In France 1918-1930, Brandon Moblo Jan 2008

Failed Men: The Postwar Crisis Of Masculinity In France 1918-1930, Brandon Moblo

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Masculinity has been viewed by scholars as a concept which was concerned with becoming as opposed to being. One could not achieve the state of being a man and become complacent. One needed to continuously prove one’s masculinity to oneself, other men, and women.

With its emphasis on the core values of masculinity such as strength, duty and above all, courage, the First World War was seen in France as the ultimate test of manhood. However, confronted with the horrors of modern industrial warfare, men were put into a situation where they were bound to fail that test. This led …
