Creating Marginality And Reconstructing Narrative: Reconfiguring Karen Social And Geo-Political Alignment, Barbara Verchot Jan 2008

Creating Marginality And Reconstructing Narrative: Reconfiguring Karen Social And Geo-Political Alignment, Barbara Verchot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pre-modern conceptualization of shifting borderlands and territories rather than fixed boundaries often allowed for the dynamic flow of peoples between polities. Until the late 1800s and the colonization of Burma in 1886 by the British Empire, this permeability of the borders of its territory was how Siam (currently Thailand) viewed its geo-political sphere (Thomson 1995:272). Britain extended the boundaries of its empire beyond India to guarantee the economic interests of the British Empire. With this push eastward, Siam abutted a polity that rejected the idea of shifting borderlands. The British ascribed to the modern concept of non-permeability of borders. This …

Nebraska And Kansas Territories In American Legal Culture: Territorial Statutory Context, Brenden Rensink

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In commemorating the sesquicentennial of the 1854 Kansas- Nebraska Act, it is important to understand not only the events that led to and were caused by its passage but also the very organic act itself.' This piece of national legislation caused great tension in the halls of Congress before being passed and also great tension in the very territories it organized after its passing. The most shocking example of these tensions was the mini civil war, commonly known as "Bleeding Kansas," which some historians suggest represents the first battles of the much greater Civil War. Nearly seventy years of similar …

A Workingman's Paradise The Evolution Of An Unplanned Suburban Landscape, Anne E. Krulikowski Jan 2008

A Workingman's Paradise The Evolution Of An Unplanned Suburban Landscape, Anne E. Krulikowski

History Faculty Publications

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, land speculators laid out numerous unplanned suburban subdivisions in outlying wards of large industrial North American cities, including a group of nineteen such subdivisions in lower Southwest Philadelphia. With few restrictions on building and land use, individual families created businesses, dwellings, and yards to meet their own needs; thus, these subdivisions were characterized by significant variations in access to modern services and in the size, style, and quality of dwellings. Residents took great pride in their neighborhoods but also valued the surviving natural landscape preserved by undeveloped blocks and lots. [ABSTRACT FROM …

Edited by Charles L. Cohen and Paul S. Boyer, whose comprehensive historical essays provide a broad overview to the topic, this book is the first on the history of religious print culture in modern America and a well-timed entry into the increasingly prominent contemporary debate over the role of religion in …

Reacting To Hitler: Polish, Hungarian, Lithuanian, And Romanian Foreign Policy, 1933-1939, Geoffrey K. Krempa

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The nations of East Central Europe have traditionally been portrayed as “victims” of Nazi German expansionism. In this work the foreign policies of Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, and Romania from 1933 to 1939 were examined through the paradigm of Hitler's major foreign policy achievements to explore this prevalent notion and to discern why the foreign policies of these governments failed. These included his rise to power in 1933, the remilitarization of the Rhineland, the Anschluss with Austria, the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia, and the invasion of Poland. Specifically, the reactions of these four nations to German action and their relationships with each …

The Union Army Had Something To Do With It: General Lee's Plan At Gettysburg And Why It Failed, Paul Mengel

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The question considered is what General Robert E. Lee’s plan for the battle of Gettysburg actually was, and why he fought the battle the way he did, based on a reexamination of extensive commentaries left by the participants in the battle.

General Lee believed that the Confederacy could not outlast the Union but had to win battles to cause the Union to abandon the war. This was one purpose of the invasion of the North. An initially favorable opportunity arose at Gettysburg. Despite some setbacks, Lee was encouraged and kept attacking. His plans failed because the Union Army had so …

Education For All: The Freedmen's Bureau Schools In Richmond And Petersburg, 1865 - 1870, Scott Britton Hansen Jan 2008

Education For All: The Freedmen's Bureau Schools In Richmond And Petersburg, 1865 - 1870, Scott Britton Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the development of Freedmen's Bureau schools in Central Virginia at the end of the Civil War. Under the watchful eye of Ralza Manly, Superintendent of the Virginia Freedmen's Bureau education division, establishing schools for freed slaves faced innumerable challenges ranging from inadequate financial resources to hostile southern whites who opposed northern intervention into local affairs. Nevertheless, northern benevolent societies and hundreds of altruistic, yet paternalistic, educational missionaries converged on Richmond and Petersburg determined that education was essential if blacks were to achieve true freedom and become self-reliant and independent. While the Bureau devoted much of its energy …

Anti-Semitism And The Early Printing Press: A Study Of The Effect Of The Printing Press On Jewish Expulsions In Germany, 1450-1520, Amy O'Callaghan

Honors Papers

At the end of the fifteenth century, the Holy Roman Empire saw a dramatic escalation in anti-Semitism that paved the way for one of the largest waves of Jewish expulsions in medieval history. The Jews were expelled from Endingen in 1470, Mainz in 1473, and following the case of Simon of Trent, the Trent Jews were banished in 1475 and the Jews of Pass au in 1479; by the end of the fifteenth century Mecklenburg, Magdeburg, Salzburg and Nuremberg had also succeeded in driving out their Jewish populations. This is only a sample of the cities that lost their Jewish …
