Don Imus, Isiah Thomas, And The Nba, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 2007

Don Imus, Isiah Thomas, And The Nba, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

My, how time flies. It was seven months ago that Don Imus made his remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team and found himself on the receiving end of a considerable amount of heat from a wide range of critics. In less than a month Don Imus will return to the airwaves, not nationally, but in New York City, and his show will not be simulcast on Cable television. So after being away for eight months, being the subject of considerable criticism, and collecting $20M for his troubles, the I-Man will return. I am already feeling the Christmas spirit.

Students Investigate 1600s Depue Massacre, Allison Ryan

Public History in Illinois Documents

DEPUE — South and east of DePue, near the remaining vertebrae of a former railroad bridge, an ordinary cornfield shows no sign of the massacre that may once have taken place on its soil, long before the nearby town was founded.

Clay Skinner, a teacher at Illinois Math and Science Academy, Aurora, and a handful of his students hope to change that.

This preliminary report describes historical research and an intensive archeological survey conducted for a 4.9-mile-long stretch of FM 2092 in Menard County by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. The work was performed for the Texas Department of Transportation in conjunction with a road improvement project beginning at the eastern Menard city limit and extending eastward to just beyond Fivemile Crossing. Book Review:The Swiss And The Nazis: How The Alpine Republic Survived In The Shadow Of The Third Reich, Louis B. Kuppenheimer

Swiss American Historical Society Review

For hundreds of years Switzerland has been recognized as a nation committed to not being involved in military conflicts. However, in WWII it was confronted by the most serious and credible threat to its neutrality since the inception of the policy. To begin with, Switzerland's wartime population of 4,200,000 was outnumbered nearly eighteen to one by its most lethal contiguous neighbor, Germany. When Austria and Italy were thrown in, the ratio jumped to thirty to one. In addition, the Axis powers of Italy and Germany shared over seventy percent of Switzerland's border. And although her industrial production was of the …

Book Review: Churches And The Holocaust: Unholy Teaching, Good Samaritans, And Reconciliation, Joy Laudie

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Yad Vashem was created in 1953 by the Israeli parliament as a memorial to the Holocaust. Since its inception over 21,000 non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews from the Nazis have been singled out as "Righteous Among the Nations." Mordecai Paldiel has been the director of the Department for the Righteous at Yad Vashem for the past twenty-five years. His position has allowed him to monitor the investigations of cases in which men and women are nominated for recognition in saving Jewish lives. The work has opened his eyes to a new aspect of human behavior; caring for …

The Impact Of Swiss Exile On An East German Critical Marxist, Axel Fair-Schulz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Among many East German Marxists, who had embraced Marxism in the 1930s and opted to live in East Germany after World War II (between the 1950s until the end of the GDR in 1989), was a commitment to the Communist party that was informed by a more nuanced and sophisticated Marxism than what most party bureaucrats were exposed to.

Abraham Lincoln And The Development Of The "War Powers" Of The Presidency, Allen C. Guelzo Nov 2007

Abraham Lincoln And The Development Of The "War Powers" Of The Presidency, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

By conferring on the President the title of "commander in chief," the Constitution created an awkward and undefined area of presidential prerogative. The first President to have to confront this ambiguity was Abraham Lincoln, who developed a presidential "war powers" doctrine based on his presidential oath, the Constitution's "republican guarantee," and the necessity imposed by the novelty of a civil war. This doctrine was seriously contested in Lincoln's time by both Congress and the judiciary, and it continues to be an unresolved constitutional question in the present. But Lincoln's use of such war powers is one demonstration of how a …
