"If The Spanish Would But Join" The Forgotten Implications Of Spanish Involvement In The American Revolution, Allison Coble Jan 2003

"If The Spanish Would But Join" The Forgotten Implications Of Spanish Involvement In The American Revolution, Allison Coble

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The participation of other countries is generally absent from most American recollections of the Revolutionary War. The stories of the War of Independence generally invoke images of the young colonies rebelling against the British monarchy, but how could a small strip of colonies break away from Britain unaided? Acknowledgement is given to the French, if only briefly, for their presence at the Battle of Yorktown, but Americans tends to forget that France was the first ally of the United States. Even less attention is given to another European county that aided the war effort. Although rarely mentioned in textbooks, Spain …

Entre La Cotidianeidad, El Pacer Y La Fuga: Fragmentos Narrativos De Una Transición, Alvaro Kaempfer Jan 2003

Entre La Cotidianeidad, El Pacer Y La Fuga: Fragmentos Narrativos De Una Transición, Alvaro Kaempfer

Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies Faculty Publications

Double Victims: Fictional Representatives Of Women In The Holocaust, Shauna Copeland Jan 2003

Double Victims: Fictional Representatives Of Women In The Holocaust, Shauna Copeland

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Traditional Holocaust studies have largely overlooked women's unique voices, instead treating the eloquent and moving narratives of such renowned authors as Elie Wiesel and Tadeusz Borowski as definitive sources on "the" Holocaust experience. Recently, scholars have addressed the absence of women's voices in Holocaust studies, arguing that women's experiences, and their reactions to those experiences, were in fact very different from those of men. This topic is a controversial one, and some scholars argue that women's suffering should not be focused upon in the context of an event that sentenced all Jews to death. With such controversy surrounding this issue, …

Standing Strong: A History Of The Bowling Green Public Library, Jonathan Jeffrey Jan 2003

Standing Strong: A History Of The Bowling Green Public Library, Jonathan Jeffrey

SCL Faculty and Staff Book Gallery

Standing Strong is the heroic story of ordinary citizens who believed in and worked for extraordinary results. The Bowling Green Public Library (now Warren County Public Library) began as a Works Progress Administration project in 1938 through the effort of local women who believed the city’s children and adults needed free library service. When these funds were no longer available, the library subsisted for several years on a $50 per month appropriation form the city. To create tax-based funding for the cash strapped organization, the City Commission created the Bowling Green Public Library by municipal order on October 2, 1953. …

Children Of The Spanish Civil War, Claire J. Paolini Jan 2003

Children Of The Spanish Civil War, Claire J. Paolini

SHU Faculty Publications

In the prolific literature about the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the voices of children have remained largely silent and their experiences neglected; yet the lives of thousands of Spanish children were disrupted by the hardships of the long civil war, and their physical, social, moral, and emotional development from childhood to adulthood was complicated by fear, bombings, shocking violence, loneliness, hunger, and the extremes of weather conditions.

Blue Earth County Poor Farm: A Brief History, Evan Rusch, Kellian Clink Jan 2003

Blue Earth County Poor Farm: A Brief History, Evan Rusch, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

Piecing together a history of the Blue Earth County Poor Farm proved to be a daunting task. A visit today, to the residence that once was home to Blue Earth County’s poor and aged, certainly would suggest the building’s rich history. But as we found in our research, much of the story of this historic building was never recorded or has been lost. What records exist are as scant in information as they are in numbers. What does exist to tell us of the Poor Farm, are articles from the newspapers of the area including the Blue Earth County Enterprise, …

Welfare And Warfare: American Organized Labor Approaches The Military-Industrial Complex, 1949-1964, Edmund Wehrle Jan 2003

Welfare And Warfare: American Organized Labor Approaches The Military-Industrial Complex, 1949-1964, Edmund Wehrle

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Historians have been almost unanimous in condemning American organized labor's postwar relationship with the military-industrial complex.(1) Most follow Nelson Lichtenstein's assessment of a movement sacrificing militancy in favor of a junior partnership in a corporate state dominated by employers and the state. This capitulation legitimized managerial authority, validated a regressive economic system, and latched labor's wagon to a reactionary foreign policy and an emerging garrison state(2) This latter relationship, in particular, has galled critics of American organized labor. By the 1970s, they could assert, as did even "labor priest" Monsignor Charles Owen Rice, that labor had become a "lackey of …

Living in a foreign land, these immigrants maintained their cultural identity through the observance of important traditional holidays. This thesis examines the experiences of these three groups in nineteenth century Marin and demonstrates the importance of cultural celebrations in the formation and preservation of their cultural identity.
