In July 1996, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) conducted shovel testing and backhoe trenching operations along the western edge of San Pedro Park, near downtown San Antonio, Texas. The purpose of the testing was to detennine the exact location at which the Alazan acequia would be impacted by a planned drainage improvement project under North Flores Street, and to then assess the likelihood that the project would significantly impact buried cultural material. Using old maps as guides, the acequia was located approximately 55 m south of Ashby Street. It was …

In April 1999, the Centre for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) provided archival research and assessment of the Houston Street to Lexington Avenue portion of the San Antonio River Improvements Project. This undertaking enabled archival research to precede the initiation of the San Antonio River Improvements Project in order to identify areas of potentially significant cultural resources within the project area. In this capacity, CAR served as consultants to PBS&J, Engineering and Environmental Consulting for their client, the San Antonio River Authority (SARA), on the San Antonio River Improvements Project (Houston Street to …

Mission Nuestra Senora del Rosario founded in 1754, is located four miles west of modem-day Goliad, Texas. Established for the Karankawa Indians, it was finally abandoned in 1808. Archaeological investigations have been conducted at the site in the 1940s, 1970s, and 1990s. This body of work, the most recent, was conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio (CAR) (UTSA) under the auspices of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). In July through September 1999, CAR excavated 105 units, cleared some above-ground walls, and probed for buried walls or foundations. A geophysical …

Archeological Test Excavations At 41wm543 On Fm 734, The Parmer Lane Extension, Williamson County, Texas, Barbara J. Hickman
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
A previously recorded site, 41WM543, was re-evaluated by archeologists from the Texas Department of Transportation in connection with the FM 734 Parmer Lane extension northwest of Austin, Texas. The portion of the site within the proposed right-of-way was tested after a burned rock concentration was exposed. Chronology of the open campsite is based on projectile point typology as no datable features were found. The diagnostic projectile points represented a time span of Early Archaic through Late Archaic Periods. The majority of the points were found in only two levels, however. Given the lack of buried features, no further work is …

The Civil War Days Of Captain Charles D. Roush: Company B, 6th Pennsylvania Regiment Reserves, C. Christopher Brown
The Civil War Days Of Captain Charles D. Roush: Company B, 6th Pennsylvania Regiment Reserves, C. Christopher Brown
Book Gallery
The Civil War diary of Capt. Charles Roush provides valuable insight into the life of a Union soldier who marched in 1861 and 1862 through the rolling hills of Maryland and Virginia, ending at the battle of South Mountain, where Roush was injured, just a couple of days prior to Antietam.
His diary relates the dreariness of war. Disease was arguably a far more potent adversary than the Southern troops. Winter brought bad weather, much sickness, as well as McCellan’s infamous forced “promenade” through northern Virginia.
In May 1862, after returning from a long march, Roush encountered two special visitors …

The Cosmopolitan South - Privileged Southerners, Philadelphia, And The Fashionable Tour In The Antebellum Era, Daniel P. Kilbride
The Cosmopolitan South - Privileged Southerners, Philadelphia, And The Fashionable Tour In The Antebellum Era, Daniel P. Kilbride
History
Analyzes connections between the Southern aristocracy and the elite of Philadelphia in the antebellum period. The two groups shared class interests that Southerners found more compatible than association with their parochial, rural countrymen. Privileged Southerners preferred an atmosphere both urban and urbane, which they found in Northern cities, especially Philadelphia, where they toured the city's prisons, parks, and museums, and sampled its fleshpots. In doing so, they shared a class attitude of exclusivity that disparaged local and country life in favor of a cohesive national elite. The bonds of class even held against the upheavals preceding the Civil War and …

The Sedition Act Of 1798 And The Incorporation Of Seditious Libel Into First Amendment Jurisprudence, Christopher D. Jenkins
The Sedition Act Of 1798 And The Incorporation Of Seditious Libel Into First Amendment Jurisprudence, Christopher D. Jenkins
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
On July 14, 1798, more than six years after the ratification of the First Amendment, the Federalist controlled Congress of the United States passed the Sedition Act. This Act, codifying the substantive English common law of seditious libel, made it a federal crime to publish defamatory matter against the Congress, President, or government of the United States. Republican critics of the act argued it to be unconstitutional as a violation of Congress’ limited powers, and the First Amendment’s press clause. Federalists, however, interpreted this clause to permit prosecutions for seditious libel. The ensuing public controversy over the Sedition Act represented …

The National Security Debate And The Truman Administration's Policy Toward China, 1947-1950, Robert D. Russell Ii
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
After World War II, the United States faced a new enemy: the Soviet Union. However, U. S. armed forces were rapidly demobilized after the war, which hindered the U. S. military’s capability to thwart the Soviet threat. Even though, Communism never had been an extreme threat to U. S. national security. World War II had leveled and destroyed much of the European and Asian economic infrastructure, which contributed to the appeal of this ideology. Therefore, many observers felt that international communism was now a threat to U. S. national security. Significantly, only the United States possessed the power to confront …

Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale De France, Codex Grec 54: Modus Operandi Of Scribes And Artists In A Palaiologan Gospel Book, Kathleen Maxwell
Art and Art History
Much can be learned about the working methods of scribes and artists when they leave their product unfinished. This is true of the late thirteenth-century illustrated Gospel book, Paris, Bibliothe`que Nationale de France, cod. gr. 54. It was intended to be a deluxe, bilingual (Greek and Latin) manuscript featuring full-page evangelist portraits and an extensive narrative cycle of some fifty-two miniatures. In the end, only about half of its Latin text and twenty-two narrative miniatures were actually completed. Five other miniatures remain unfinished, and space was reserved in the text for twenty-five additional miniatures that were never even begun. No …
