Cuba And The Latin American Terms Of Trade In The Nineteenth Century: Old Theories, New Evidence, Linda K. Salvucci
Cuba And The Latin American Terms Of Trade In The Nineteenth Century: Old Theories, New Evidence, Linda K. Salvucci
History Faculty Research
Since the early 1950s, scholars from diverse regions and disciplines have analyzed the terms of trade of developing countries. The Latin American contribution to this discussion has been especially noteworthy. Raul Prebisch, a "pioneer" in proposing a secular decline in the terms of trade for developing countries, was an Argentine whose career included a long association with the United Nations and with the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA). Prebisch's thinking influenced an entire generation of economists from Latin America and elsewhere who were preoccupied by postwar economic concerns. Prebisch, along with Singer, relied upon the terms of trade to …

I am writing here about an American Place, but not about Thomas Jefferson's town, where I live, or about the South, to which I have devoted my working life. Rather, I am writing about that new American place we cannot see but whose effects we increasingly feel, cyberspace.

White Savages In Hunting Shirts : The Rifleman's Costume Of National Identity And Rebellion In The American Revolution, Byron C. Smith
White Savages In Hunting Shirts : The Rifleman's Costume Of National Identity And Rebellion In The American Revolution, Byron C. Smith
Master's Theses
This thesis relies on primary sources to address the significance of clothing and accoutrements worn by backwoods riflemen during the era of the American Revolution. As North America's rebellious colonies became a nation, they struggled to find cultural symbols that distinguished them from their European cousins. As Europeans often identified America symbolically as the "noble savage," in turn some Americans looked to the Indian for inspiration in their new search for national identity. During the Revolution many Americans from backwoods regions of the middle and southern colonies, wearing uniquely American garments called hunting shirts, openly rebelled against their European heritage …

A Changing Bridge For Changing Times: The History Of The West Boston Bridge, 1793-1907, Dale H. Freeman
A Changing Bridge For Changing Times: The History Of The West Boston Bridge, 1793-1907, Dale H. Freeman
Dale H. Freeman
Master of Arts Thesis, June 2000: This thesis examines the construction in 1793 of the West Boston Bridge, the first bridge to span the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge, and its successors at the same location in 1854 and then 1907 (the Longfellow Bridge). It is a study of the impact of these bridges on the commercial development and urban settlement patterns of both Cambridge and Boston, and it sets the construction of each bridge in the historical context of the period in which each was built. The thesis utilizes a variety of primary sources drawn from the Cambridge …
The Future Of Regional Integration In Latin America, Cindy Rosales Bush
The Future Of Regional Integration In Latin America, Cindy Rosales Bush
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
Commonalties in language, religion, history, politics and economics have retained positive ties between the nations of Latin America. However, in lieu of the transnational problems that the region is facing in the areas of the environment, drugs and hunger, mere cultural and historical commonalties will not be enough to establish the regional cooperation desperately needed in Latin America to procure its economic future . Many organizations have thus been created to further cooperation and integration in the region. These initiatives, however, lack certain characteristics needed for successful regional integration. Moreover, a specific initiative, the FT AA spear headed by the …
The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle
The Botetourt Dragoons In War And Peace, Michael G. Henkle
Honors Theses
This thesis studies a Confederate cavalry company from the immediate prewar years through the war, ending with the death of one of its last members. Most soldiers were residents of Botetourt County, Virginia. The study focuses upon both the men themselves and the battles in which they fought. Letters, diaries, and postwar accounts reveal their thoughts. After the war, many took an active role in both veterans' affairs and their community by joining veteran camps and participating in politics. Near the end, many received pensions or stayed in old soldiers' homes.

Royal Protectors, Explorers And Thieves : Pirates Of The Elizabethan Cold War, 1558-1685, Dodie Jones
Honors Theses
Within this paper, I intend to explain the significance of Elizabethan pirates as financial and defensive assets to Elizabethan England. Because the pirates existed as plunderers and thieves, outright state support of their ventures by Parliament and the Queen is difficult to determine. Evidence indicates, however, that Queen Elizabeth I developed relationships with specific pirates, chiefly Sir John Hawkins and Sir Francis Drake. Elizabeth entrusted Hawkins and Drake to employ cold war tactics against Spain and secure England's financial stability with stolen goods. Through state documents, primary accounts, biographies, and secondary sources, I aim to explain certain aspects of the …

Unions, Cartels, And The Political Economy Of American Cities: The Chicago Flat Janitors' Union In The Progressive Era And 1920s, John Jentz
Library Faculty Research and Publications
In 1997, Ira Katznelson contributed to the ongoing discussion among social scientists and historians about how to analyze class formation and the development of the American state. He was particularly interested in tying this research to the history of liberalism in an effort to both historicize the generalizations of Louis Hartz and address the question of American exceptionalism. Evaluating the body of research, Katznelson argued that authors had too frequently abstracted the state from its context and then used it to explain the very phenomena that helped define the state's character in the first place. In part to imbed the …

Marcus Lee Hansen's Approach To The History Of Scandinavian Immigration, J.R. Christianson
Marcus Lee Hansen's Approach To The History Of Scandinavian Immigration, J.R. Christianson
The Bridge
Marcus Lee Hansen (1892-1938) has been called "the first serious student of the history of American immigration," and he was a very good one, but that was long ago.2 His major scholarship appeared after his death at the age of forty-five in 1938. Few authors have written about American immigration with Marcus Lee Hansen's literary grace and historical brilliance, but huge amounts of ethnic and immigration history have been written since his day. Old history often goes stale and out of print. What about Marcus Lee Hansen? Is there anything in his view of immigration that still speaks to us …

Hygiene And "The Indian Problem": Ethnicity And Medicine In Bolivia, 1910-1920, Ann Zulawski
Latin American and Latino/a Studies: Faculty Publications
In the first decades of the twentieth century, Bolivian intellectuals and politicians debated how the country's Indian population should be incorporated into social and political life as the nation became increasingly integrated internally and forged stronger links to the world market. Public health was central to this discussion because of elite fears of contagion due to greater contact between Indians and non-Indians and the realization that if Indians were to be productive members of society, then their physical well-being had to be considered. This study examines the proposals of two Bolivian doctors, Jaime Mendoza and Nestor Morales, for improving the …

Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen
Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen
Theses and Dissertations
In his 1978 biography of Dorothea Lange, Milton Meltzer appraised Lange's 1936 photography in Utah as nothing more than mundane work done for the benefit of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and not for her own benefit as a photographer. Yet, her work in Utah encapsulates the aspirations, goals, and styles of Lange, and gives insight into her vision as a photographer and representative of the New Deal. Through carefully composed photographs, Lange shows the hardships and hope of life in Utah during the Great Depression.
This thesis investigates Lange's photographs in order to gain a greater understanding of the …

Becoming Mormon Men: Male Rites Of Passage And The Rise Of Mormonism In Nineteenth-Century America, Bruce R. Lott
Becoming Mormon Men: Male Rites Of Passage And The Rise Of Mormonism In Nineteenth-Century America, Bruce R. Lott
Theses and Dissertations
The evidence presented in this thesis supports a view of the first Mormon men as coming from the agrarian majority of early nineteenth-century American farmers and artisans who embraced a set of manly ideals that differed significantly, in many ways, from those embraced by their middle-class contemporaries. These men's life writings attest to boyhood experiences of working alongside their fathers as soon as they were physically able, and subsequently of acting as substitute farmers and breadwinners as well as being put out to work outside the direct supervision of their fathers. Such experiences enabled them to frequently follow in the …
[Introduction To] Valley Of The Shadow: Two Communities In The American Civil War, Edward L. Ayers
[Introduction To] Valley Of The Shadow: Two Communities In The American Civil War, Edward L. Ayers
Bookshelf
Two communities in America's Great Valley--Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and Augusta County, Virginia--separated by only a few hundred miles, share much in their politics and ways of life. Yet they emerge on opposing sides of a war in which they zealously send their sons to fight and die. Here we see a Civil War that is not the inevitable conflict of rival societies, but a human drama, immediate, particular, engrossing.
