The charts in this exhibition explore how mariners have distinguished one piece of water from any other, by determining what phenomena can be delineated across the vast, trackless ocean and by developing notations to express those phenomena.

My fascination with family history began with my maternal grandmother’s stories. As a child, I loved quizzing her about the lives of her parents and grandparents, prodding her to reach as far back as she could into her memory and family lineage to tell me their stories. Her ancestors, English, Scottish, and French, had come to North America in the first half of the seventeenth century. Settling in the British colonies and New France, they participated in many of the events and movements that shaped the continent. The family tales my grandmother told focused on deeds of female heroism, male …

NEWSLETTER M Transcendentalist by L. Mikel Vause, Weber State University he term "transcendentalist" evokes an interesting image. Generally when one thinks of a transcendentalist, the image of a little brown-skinned mystic, sitting in lotus position chanting "ommm" comes to ihind. Although American transcendentalism certainly does have Far Eastern roots, one ascribing to that title is Br more likely to be found tramping around the back country rather than curled up on a mat contemplating the ilssence of existence. The founder of American transcendentalism is Ralph Waldo Emerson, "The Sage of Concord." It was Emerson who, with the publication of Nature …

Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart
Localités/Localities
The relationships between the wholes and parts of American history are vital to our understanding of ourselves as a nation and a people. Many of the central paradoxes and ambiguities of our national existence cannot be adequately understood without exploring the interplay between localism and nationalism that runs like a lietmotiv throughout American history. The influence of the westward movement in our nation’s past, the give and take of federal-state relations, the internecine sectionalism of the nineteenth century, and the more benign regionalism of the twentieth century raise important questions about the relationship between local history and national heritage, and …

National History In The Local Landscape: Industrial Revolution In Sutton, Massachusetts, Nora Pat Small
Localités/Localities
Sutton, Massachusetts, in the Blackstone River Valley of southeastern Massachusetts, celebrated the nation’s centennial with the publication of one of the best local histories of the period. When the Reverends Mr. Benedict and Mr. Tracy looked back over the 172 year history of their community, they found much to celebrate, but also more than a little to bemoan.

Locations Of Black Identity: Community Canning Centers In Texas, 1915-1935, Debra Ann Reid
Localités/Localities
In 1915, African Americans in rural Texas observed communities in transition when they looked out the doors of their wood-frame houses. In that year approximately 72 percent of all blacks in the state, or 511,321 individuals, lived in rural areas. During the 1920s low commodity prices and high inflation combined to ruin many, but few left the land. Instead they rented land on the shares and struggled to earn enough of a living to keep families together. Yet the Great Depression intensified the poverty and forced many blacks to leave rural life behind. In addition, the violence and disfranchisement of …

Unions, Cartels, And The Political Economy Of American Cities: The Chicago Flat Janitors' Union In The Progressive Era And 1920s, John Jentz
Library Faculty Research and Publications
In 1997, Ira Katznelson contributed to the ongoing discussion among social scientists and historians about how to analyze class formation and the development of the American state. He was particularly interested in tying this research to the history of liberalism in an effort to both historicize the generalizations of Louis Hartz and address the question of American exceptionalism. Evaluating the body of research, Katznelson argued that authors had too frequently abstracted the state from its context and then used it to explain the very phenomena that helped define the state's character in the first place. In part to imbed the …

Convents As Litigants: Dowry And Inheritance Disputes In Early-Modern Spain, Elizabeth Lehfeldt
Convents As Litigants: Dowry And Inheritance Disputes In Early-Modern Spain, Elizabeth Lehfeldt
History Faculty Publications
This article examines the contentious and frequently litigious relationship between convents and the families of professed nuns in early-modern Spain. From the:mid-sixteenth century forward Spanish convents entered into oftentimes protracted lawsuits over disputes involving these nuns' dowry payments, yearly maintenance allowances, and inheritance rights subsequent to their profession. Because the parties to these disputes were willing to risk long-standing and mutually beneficial relationships to defend their social and financial interests in court, these clashes are significant for what: they reveal about the complex social matrix involving nuns, their families, and convents. Nuns demonstrated a profound sense of connection to family …

Royal Protectors, Explorers And Thieves : Pirates Of The Elizabethan Cold War, 1558-1685, Dodie Jones
Honors Theses
Within this paper, I intend to explain the significance of Elizabethan pirates as financial and defensive assets to Elizabethan England. Because the pirates existed as plunderers and thieves, outright state support of their ventures by Parliament and the Queen is difficult to determine. Evidence indicates, however, that Queen Elizabeth I developed relationships with specific pirates, chiefly Sir John Hawkins and Sir Francis Drake. Elizabeth entrusted Hawkins and Drake to employ cold war tactics against Spain and secure England's financial stability with stolen goods. Through state documents, primary accounts, biographies, and secondary sources, I aim to explain certain aspects of the …
Bronze Sons Of The Forest On Display : Images Of American Indians At The 1898 Transmississippi And International Exposition, Josh Clough
Honors Theses
This study examines a large Indian encampment that was made part of an exposition held in Omaha, Nebraska in 1898. Relying almost exclusively on primary sources such as the two major newspapers in Omaha at the time, the World-Herald and the Bee, I attempt to uncover the diverse images cast by Indian delegates during their three month stay at the fair.· As well, I investigate reasons why Omaha seemed the perfect site to hold the Indian Congress and what incentives the natives had for attending. The long-term significance of the gathering, I conclude, lay mostly in the forum it …
One Mistress And No Master: Elizabeth I And Her Use Of Public Personas To Gain And Maintain Power, Michael J. Davye
One Mistress And No Master: Elizabeth I And Her Use Of Public Personas To Gain And Maintain Power, Michael J. Davye
History Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the personas that Elizabeth used to gain, hold, and wield power during her reign as Queen of England. These personas were most likely conscious constructs created to deal with the problems Elizabeth faced as ruler of England. She had been bastardized by her father, Henry VIII, and, therefore, was considered by many to have no legitimate claim to the throne. But this problem was almost insignificant in contrast to the problems she faced trying to assert her authority as a female monarch. Elizabeth realized the prevailing wisdom of the …
