Interview No. 959, Ruth De Sommer Jul 2000

Interview No. 959, Ruth De Sommer

Combined Interviews

Sommer left Germany at the beginning of the Third Reich, for Holland; she saw how bad the antisiemitism was. She left when she was 16, and she lived in Holland with a family, working as a nursemaid (niñera). Then she came alone to Buenos Aires in 1936; her parents arrived later. When she arrived, since she was alone (without parent's written consent) and only 20 years old, she wasn't allowed to leave the port until her aunt arrived to vouch for her. She lived with her uncle and aunt in Belgraro until her parents arrived. Her parents rented an apartment in …

On The Double: The Hidden (Queer And Jewish) Career Of Danny Kaye, Michael Bronski Jul 2000

On The Double: The Hidden (Queer And Jewish) Career Of Danny Kaye, Michael Bronski

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Last year, in the early stages of applying for the Duberman Fellowship, I began by trying to discern a topic, a subject, that would involve me intellectually as well as emotionally. As a free-lance writer and cultural critic I am, more frequently than not, assigned subjects, books, movies, performances by my editors. If I received the Duberman I wanted to research and write about something that resonated with my life and current interests.

"Who Is Sleeping In The Bed Of Sodom?", Nancy Levene Jul 2000

"Who Is Sleeping In The Bed Of Sodom?", Nancy Levene

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

The question that I am left with from the extraordinary presentations over the conference's two days borrows from Rabbi Steve Greenberg's and Ludger Viefhues's discussion of the multiple images of the biblical "Sodom". Conventionally Sodom has signified a place of sexual deviance or, conversely, sexual censorship. But as Greenberg pointed out, in many traditional commentaries on the story of the condemnation of Sodom, the issue was not that the townspeople were engaged in forbidden sexual practices, but that they were violent and hostile to those in need of shelter and food.

Collegiate Life From Both Sides Of The Desk: South Dakota State University In The 1880s, Lisa R. Lindell

Hilton M. Briggs Library Faculty Publications

The ninth of August 1888 was a day to remember in the history of South Dakota State University and the life of one of its first students. On that day, John Merton Aldrich and two classmates graduated from the institution then known as Dakota Agricultural College (DAC), becoming the first to complete the full college program. Excited and a little dazed, having just become engaged to be married the previous day, Aldrich still took time to recount the ceremonies in his diary, a record he had faithfully kept throughout his three years at DAC. Among his teachers and mentors at …

TEAMS Medieval German Texts in Bilingual Editions

These texts will be of interest because they represent a kind of writing - at the intersection of ecclesiastical and secular power, drawing on the whole range of medieval Latin learning, yet written in vernacular verse - that is not found elsewhere in the European Middle Ages. In addition, they may be of use in teaching since, although relatively short, they illustrate a great number of characteristic medieval ways of writing and can be linked to a number of quite remarkable historical figures.

Johann von Justi, the foremost literary cameralist of his generation, served as chief police commissioner in Göttingen between 1755 and 1757. While in Göttingen, Justi offered lectures at the university on the “economic, police and cameral sciences.” He also arrested vagrants, wrote on chemistry, disciplined unruly students, conducted chemical experiments, supervised the pricing of Göttingen's staple goods, engaged in a public controversy with a prominent Berlin chemist, edited and published a bi-weekly periodical (Göttingische Policey-Amts Nachrichien), and worked with the university's curator to refashion the academic structure of the sciences. Taken together, these various activities reflected his broad …
