The Significance Of The Kicker In American And European Football, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2000

The Significance Of The Kicker In American And European Football, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

One of the primary objectives in sport is to win. In American sport winning is too often the only thing. Coaches spend sixteen to eighteen-hour days in seven-day weeks searching for all those little keys to victory that are necessary to success. Owners too spend time, energy and especially dollars in the great quest for the glory that comes with winning.

Baseball's Rising Salaries - Bud Lite At Congressional Hearing, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2000

Baseball's Rising Salaries - Bud Lite At Congressional Hearing, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This past week Mike Mussina signed with the New York Yankees for $88.5M over six-year period with $12M of that a signing bonus to be spread over the contract at $2M per year. Next year Mussina will make $10M pitching for the Yankees. Considered by many to be one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, Mussina gives the Yankees a formidable starting rotation, and this has already led some to concede next year's World Championship to them. This might be a bit premature for early December but it is difficult to deny that they are the clear early …

Review Of Die Nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslager: Entwicklung Und Struktur, Edited By Ulrich Herbert, Karin Orth, And Christoph Dieckmann, Alan E. Steinweis

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Perhaps more than any other aspect of Nazi rule, the “concentration camp” has symbolized Nazi terror in the popular imagination. The existence of the camps was widely known both inside and outside of Germany during the years of Nazi rule, and their already considerable notoriety was heightened on their liberation by Allied forces. As gruesome images of mass graves and piles of emaciated corpses appeared in newspapers, and as German citizens were forced by occupation authorities to visit the camps and witness the horrific evidence in person, the camps came to epitomize Nazi barbarism. Until today they have remained among …

Lucan’S Epic Aristeia And The Hero Of The Bellum Civile, Vanessa Gorman Dec 2000

Lucan’S Epic Aristeia And The Hero Of The Bellum Civile, Vanessa Gorman

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Scelerique nefando nomen erit virtus ("Virtue will be the name given to unspeakable crime," 1.667-68). This rhetorically- charged sententia does more than illustrate Lucan's penchant for impassioned embellishment. It also reflects a sophisticated critical structure that resolves an apparent contradiction of momentous importance in Lucan's poem. On the one hand, Lucan chooses to write on the subject of the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, a war that is scelus nefandum: it is more painful, more damaging, and more atrocious than any other Roman battle because it requires the shedding of kindred blood and results in tyranny. On the …
