Cuba And The Latin American Terms Of Trade In The Nineteenth Century: Old Theories, New Evidence, Linda K. Salvucci Oct 2000

Cuba And The Latin American Terms Of Trade In The Nineteenth Century: Old Theories, New Evidence, Linda K. Salvucci

History Faculty Research

Since the early 1950s, scholars from diverse regions and disciplines have analyzed the terms of trade of developing countries. The Latin American contribution to this discussion has been especially noteworthy. Raul Prebisch, a "pioneer" in proposing a secular decline in the terms of trade for developing countries, was an Argentine whose career included a long association with the United Nations and with the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA). Prebisch's thinking influenced an entire generation of economists from Latin America and elsewhere who were preoccupied by postwar economic concerns. Prebisch, along with Singer, relied upon the terms of trade to …

To Make The Four Hundred Million Move: The Late Qing Dynasty Origins Of Modern Chinese Sport And Physical Culture, Andrew D. Morris

History

There is little doubt that, after a century's exposure, Chinese have absorbed and understand quite clearly the greater meanings of the realm of sport-the connections between competitive athletic endeavor, imperialist bluster, and economic standing in the world community. This article is an exploration of the late Qing Dynasty origins of this modern global culture of physical culture and sport.

Reexamining The Racial Record Of Abraham Lincoln, Jonathan Scott Holloway, William E. Gienapp, Gabor Boritt, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

Since his death in 1865 Abraham Lincoln has been universally honored in black America. In many black homes and businesses, his photograph often hangs in honor next to the one of Martin Luther King Jr. But a new book by Ebony editor Lerone Bennett Jr. contends that Lincoln was a crude bigot who told demeaning darky jokes, had an unquenchable thirst for minstrel shows, consistently used the word "nigger," and supported efforts to ship Negroes back to Africa.

As Jack E. White pointed out in a recent Time magazine article, this book largely has been ignored by the mainstream press. …

A Historian In Cyberspace, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

I am writing here about an American Place, but not about Thomas Jefferson's town, where I live, or about the South, to which I have devoted my working life. Rather, I am writing about that new American place we cannot see but whose effects we increasingly feel, cyberspace.

The Great Valley And The Meaning Of The Civil War, Edward L. Ayers Oct 2000

The Great Valley And The Meaning Of The Civil War, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

To understand the coming of the Civil War, then, we need to pick up the story before Fort Sumter and to carry it deeper than national events. We need to understand both the advocated of conflict and those who sought to avoid it regardless of the cost. We need to understand the communities people fought to defend, the institutions that held them together and that drove them apart.

Lincoln And The Abolitionists, Allen C. Guelzo Oct 2000

Lincoln And The Abolitionists, Allen C. Guelzo

History Faculty Publications

It has always been one of the ironies of the era of the Civil War and the end of slavery in the United States that the man who played the role of Great Emancipator of the slaves was so hugely mistrusted and so energetically vilified by the party of abolition. Abraham Lincoln, whatever his larger reputation as the liberator of more than three million black slaves in the Emancipation Proclamation, has never entirely shaken off the reputation of being something of a half-heart about it. 北洋海軍「平遠」艦考釋, Youyuan Ma Oct 2000

北洋海軍「平遠」艦考釋, Youyuan Ma

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies (1999-2006)

Jewish Stars In Texas: Rabbis And Their Work By Hollace Ava Weiner (Review), Harriett Denise Joseph Oct 2000

Jewish Stars In Texas: Rabbis And Their Work By Hollace Ava Weiner (Review), Harriett Denise Joseph

History Faculty Publications

In Jewish Stars in Texas, Hollace Ava Weiner uses a bibliographical approach to examine a century of "Texas history through the eyes of its rabbis" (p. xiv). She profiles eleven Jewish religious leaders who made an impact that extended far beyond their congregations. Chronologically they range from Heinrich Schwarz, Texas's first ordained rabbi (arriving in Hempstead in 1873), to civil rights activist Rabii Levi Olan, who served Dallas's Temple Emanu-El from 1949 to 1970. Included is information on each rabbi's religious background, his personal life, the city involved, the temple served, and contributions made. A few prominent rebbitsins (rabbis' wives) …
