The Colonelette

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Sue Loy Jan 1984

Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Sue Loy

Sabbaticals

The focus of my sabbatical leave will be the study of medieval traditions in northern Europe and their influence on precolonial and colonial settlements in North America. Increased and I proved research efforts and techniques have provided extensive amounts of new information and have affirmed that many aspects of the New World settlements and colonies reflect Old world cultural traditions. The sabbatical leave will allow me the opportunity to study the most recent materials, concepts, and hypotheses, as well as information concerning the latest methods of excavation, data collection, and analysis. Much of this will be integrated into at least …

Charles Nicholson – The Forgotten Flutist, Wendell Dobbs Jan 1984

Charles Nicholson – The Forgotten Flutist, Wendell Dobbs

Music Faculty Research

The recent fascination for the flutist-composers of the 19th century has brought to life much music by flute virtuosos such as Tulou, Demersseman, Boehm, Genin, and others. To this time, however, the colorful artistry of Charles Nicholson has been overlooked. His brief career, spanning but two decades, brought the flute to the forefront as a solo instrument in England and propagated numerous fantasies, variation, methods, and other works for flute. Indeed, his contributions as flute virtuoso and flute manufacturer have made an indelible mark on the history and development of the instrument. In the London of the 1820's and 1830's …

The Grand Peur Of 1348-49: The Shock Wave Of The Black Death In The German Southwest, Steven Rowan Jan 1984

The Grand Peur Of 1348-49: The Shock Wave Of The Black Death In The German Southwest, Steven Rowan

Quidditas

The massacre of most fo the Jewish communities in Western Germany and what is now Switzerland between late 1348 and the middle of 1349 permanently altered the position of Jews in Central Europe, both by shifting the Jewish population eastward and by moving those Jews who remained behind to the periphery of economic society. A close examination of the chronology of the massacres on the local level rapidly disproves the traditional interpretation that the massacres were attacks of the classic 'scapegoat' type made in response to the onset of the first great modern European plague. Although the first massacres outside …

Violence And The Plague In Aragón, 1348-1351, Melanie V. Shirk Jan 1984

Violence And The Plague In Aragón, 1348-1351, Melanie V. Shirk

Quidditas

As Philip Ziegler has noted, "Statistics alone cannot provide an adequate picture of the Black Death." To say that one-quarter or one-third or one-half of Europe's population perished within a few years gains the reader's attention, but does not convey what such a brutal calamity meant to the average person at the time. The fourteenth century suffered many calamities, but the sudden and mysterious appearance of the Black Death, with no known cause or cure, msut surely have been the most terrifying.
