Identity Through Remembrance, Axel C. Kildegaard Jan 1984

Identity Through Remembrance, Axel C. Kildegaard

The Bridge

In 1864, the United States government sent Colonel Kit Carson on a pillaging, murdering foray through Navaho country, what is now northern Arizona. Scot O'Dell tells the story in a charming and moving book for young adults entitled, Sing Down the Moon, winner of the Hans Christian Andersen medal for children's books in 1970. The entire nation of about 10,000 Navahoes were forced to migrate, to relocate. It was a painful journey marked by much suffering and death. To this day it is known as the "long walk;" any child of the Navahoes will tell you the story. Mother or …

Greenland 1948-1985: From Reorganization To Home Rule And Beyond, Bent Thygesen Jan 1984

Greenland 1948-1985: From Reorganization To Home Rule And Beyond, Bent Thygesen

The Bridge

This article is not, strictly speaking, Danish American in content. However, Greenland has long been a concern of the United States. Secretary of State Seward who purchased Alaska from the Russians in 1867 gave some serious thought to the acquisition of Greenland also. Since the early days of World War 11, United States troops have been stationed in Greenland as part of our strategic defense system. The Danish American Heritage Society has always taken a broad view of what is Danish American, and we believe this article fits into that broad view.

A Midsummer Day, Amy R. Thrall Jan 1984

A Midsummer Day, Amy R. Thrall

The Bridge

"Where was Chris?; Why didn't he hurry?" He knew Greta was to be the overseer of the dinner. It was Midsummer's Day; she had to be in Linden by nine o'clock to organize the work in the kitchen. The four girls, up since dawn, harassed her with questions; too young to understand that "sol er oppe" meant "sun is up," signifying a blessing to the earth in bringing life to the crops and flowers. The sun doesn't set in Denmark on June 24th until eleven at night and rises at two in the morning. Having lived through the long and …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to determine the current status of the nuclear armament/disarmament issue as a topic for the moral decision-making model in secondary social studies curriculums and to establish guidelines for its inclusion in future lessons. A review of the relevant literature provided the basis for a questionnaire mailed to four hundred, randomly selected social studies department chairpersons. Their attitudes regarding the legitimacy of the topic and methods employed in instructional lessons were addressed. Survey results were categorized according to respondents' incorporation of the topic into their curriculum and whether they taught in public or private institutions. A majority of …

Artisan Culture And The Organization Of Chicago's German Workers In The Gilded Age, 1860 To 1890, John Jentz Jan 1984

Artisan Culture And The Organization Of Chicago's German Workers In The Gilded Age, 1860 To 1890, John Jentz

Library Faculty Research and Publications

This essay evaluates the nature of German artisan culture in gilded-age Chicago and its role in the organization of modem working-class institutions. Three examples- the Workingmen's Associations of Chicago's German workers in the 1850s and 1860s, the Bakers' Mutual Benefit Society, and the tradition of tool ownership among the city's German cabinetmakers- illustrate particular resources that artisan culture provided to German craftsmen, whether it be fellowship, intellectual stimulation, organizational strength, or a sense of personal independence. At the same time, artisan culture became anachronistic amidst the rapidly expanding industries of Chicago, as systematic mechanization destroyed the central role that artisans …

Nowhere in the crisis of American agriculture are the problems more imposing than in the decline of Black farm ownership and operation.

The decline of Black farming in the U.S. is illustrated by date from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These data indicate that in every decade from 1959 to 1978, the number of Black-operated farms has been cut in half.

Railroads In Tuolumne County, California : Their Role And Importance To Specific Industries And Their Impact On County Economic Development, 1897-1917, Kyle K. Wyatt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During most of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth numerous railroads were built throughout America. Some. grew into gigantic systems with names we recognize today; Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Chesapeake & Ohio. Others faded into oblivion. But all, successful or not, were built to fill transportation needs.

In Tuolumne County, California, located along the Mother. Lode and stretching into the high Sierra Nevada, the first railroad reached the county in 1897. By World War I a number of rail lines had been built. Several, having served their purpose, had already been removed by …

The Immigrant Experience In Albuquerque, 1880-1920, Judith Boyce Demark

History ETDs

This study focuses on the experiences of the foreign-born residents of Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 1880 to 1920. Its primary aim is to determine how immigrants in one southwestern urban area fit into the history of American immigration. Topics considered include economic and geographic mobility, marriage and family patterns, and degree of assimilation. The economy of Albuquerque was based on three major sources of employment: agriculture, merchandising, and the railroad. Many immigrants were employed as skilled laborers for the railroad. A significant number owned retail or wholesale dry goods enterprises. In general, immigrants experienced a high rate of upward economic …
