Archaeological Testing Of Site 41wl19 Waller County, Texas, Glenn T. Goode
Archaeological Testing Of Site 41wl19 Waller County, Texas, Glenn T. Goode
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Testing of Site 41WL19 on State Highway 6 in Waller County, to determine elibigility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places and to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance, was undertaken in July 1984. The site lies on a sandy hilltop above Donahoe Creek, directly across State Highway 6 from St. Luke's Church in the community of Cedar Creek, and is evidenced by sparse lithic debris. Evidence recovered demonstrates that insufficient material is present within the proposed right-of-way to support a determination of eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places.

A Study Of Five Historic Cemeteries At Choke Canyon Reservoir, Live Oak And Mcmullen Counties, Anne A. Fox
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
From December 1981 to November 1982, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation aided in relocation of five historic cemeteries at Choke Canyon Reservoir in Live Oak and McMullen Counties. Thirty-four graves were located, uncovered, recorded, and removed to other cemeteries. During the process, descendants of the families involved provided valuable information on grave locations and identification. Observations were made which will be useful to other archaeologists engaged in similar projects. Information was compiled on customs and traditions of the people of the area in respect to …

The Missionary Spirit In The Augustana Church, George F. Hall
The Missionary Spirit In The Augustana Church, George F. Hall
Augustana Historical Society Publications
Summary (from book jacket):
The American church is made up of many varied groups, depending on origin, divisions, changing relationships. One of these was the Augustana Lutheran Church, founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and maintaining an independent existence from 1860 to 1962 when it became a part of a larger Lutheran community, the Lutheran Church of America. The character of the Augustana Church can be studied from different viewpoints. In this volume Dr. George Hall describes it as a missionary church. It was born out of a missionary concern in Sweden for the thousands who had emigrated. As soon as …

The Pioneer Swedish Settlements And Swedish Lutheran Churches In America, 1845-1860, Eric Norelius
Augustana Historical Society Publications
The author traces in this volume the waves of Swedish emigration that started in the mid-1840s. One of these waves, in 1850, brought a youth of 17 who sensed the significance of the movement of a people from ancient Sweden to the open lands of America. He gathered records, letters, documents, and himself had a part, as student, journalist, and clergyman, in the development of the earliest settlements. In 1890, then historian of the Augustana Lutheran Church, Norelius published his material in a book entitled History of the Swedish Settlements and Swedish Lutheran Churches in America. This translation is of …

According to Paul Schultz, president of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB), 1983 was a year of continuing leadership and growing partnership.
In his report to the almost forty participants at the recent annual meeting in Tempe, AZ, Schultz noted that "It is exciting to participate in the process that is setting a vision for continuing Indian Ministry, and then translating that vision into action. "

Irreparable damage was inflicted on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights during a bitter and protracted debate spanning much of 1983. The past year has seen the loss of an independent civil rights 'watchdog' that has served the nation welt for over 25 years. It was a one-of-a-kind agency that will be difficult, if not impossible, to replace.
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights was created by President Eisenhower in 1957 for the express purpose of investigating and monitoring in an objective manner the civil rights policies of the federal government. Under this responsibility it monitors the performance of federal …

No longer wishing to be marginalized by the national Lutheran churches, and deeply concerned about the ongoing formation of a new Lutheran church, 35 persons gathered in Chicago, May 10-12, and formed a coalition of "edge-of-the-church" ministries. Called the Working Group On Justice Agendas and the New Lutheran church, it represents the broadest based coalition of such Lutheran ministries that has ever been formed.
The Rev. Dr. Albert "Pete" Pero proclaimed the event to be '' A union which will make the new church take justice seriously.'' Pero, a member of the Transcultural Task Force, Association of Black Lutherans (LCA) …

Under the theme of "A Church for Our Children," more than 200 persons participated in the 31st Annual Human Relations Institute at Carroll College, sponsored by Lutheran Human Relations Association of America.
The theme was derived from a document prepared by the Tri-Lutheran Trans-Cultural Task Force and was the focus of worship, reflection sessions and speakers for the weekend conference July 27-29.
Keynote speaker Wi Jo Kang, a professor of World Religions and Mission at Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA, highlighted the theme with an analogy to the church as experienced at the . first Pentecost.

In the early 1980's the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service began a policy of incarcerating Haitians at Miami's Krome Detention Center. A visit to the facility in those days revealed the inhumane treatment being afforded to people who in desperation had fled the tyrannical regime of President-for-Life Jean-Claude Duvalier in creaky, overloaded boats.
At Krome they sat-month after month-segregated from family and friends in a strange new land; prisoners penned in by barbed-wire fences. Krome was aptly characterized as an ugly scar on the face of American democracy.

An FBI and police informant leads a car caravan of 39 Ku Klux Klansmen and American Nazis into an anti-Klan demonstration in a Black neighborhood in Greensboro, North Carolina. One of the planners of the attack, an undercover Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (U.S. Treasury) agent is absent from the caravan. The caravan is followed closely by an unmarked Greensboro police car. Though the FBI and police are forewarned of the assault, all police squad cars have been pulled from the area.
