A Consideration Of The Advertising Carried In The New York Times And The New York Herald During The Civil War Period (1861-64, Inc.), Franklin R. Ullrey
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to consider the nature of the advertising carried in the New York Times and the New York Herald during the Civil War period (1861-64 inc.). Particular attention is given to what is advertised, in what manner the advertising advanced or was detrimental to social betterment, content and layout of the advertisements and to exaggerated claims made in the advertisements.
The Age Of Louis Xiv, Anthony Swanke
The Age Of Louis Xiv, Anthony Swanke
Bachelors’ Theses
It is the object of the writer to try to give some kind of a picture of this glorious age of Louis XIV. To attempt to show to some degree the important role Louis XIV played in France, and Europe itself all through this period. He practically rearranged all the boundaries of his own country, and did a great deal toward bring about the many changes found in his neighbors. He was without any question the predominating power of Europe throughout his entire reign.
The Development Of Railroad Corporations In The United States To 1870, Robert A. Hahn
The Development Of Railroad Corporations In The United States To 1870, Robert A. Hahn
Bachelors’ Theses
The intention of the first part of this paper is to show how a few of the hundreds of separate railroads in the United States were begun during the years 1830 to 1850. All were built to fulfill a certain purpose, and nearly all were purely local enterprises with no thought of the great systems which were to develop. There was seldom the idea of consolidations in the building of these early railroads. They were built to serve the purpose and the need at hand. But the necessity for through service between distant points soon required that the different railroads …
Irish Learning And Its Effect On The Carolingian Renaissance, Jane Donald
Irish Learning And Its Effect On The Carolingian Renaissance, Jane Donald
Bachelors’ Theses
When the Roman Empire disintegrated and its learning was, for the time, buried by an avalanche of barbarism, Ireland alone of the many provinces which had shared in its commerce and learning, was undisturbed. Ireland had a mission; it was to be the haven in which classical learning was kept alive and it was to be the means, when the time was ripe, of carrying this culture throughout Europe.
Civil Service Under Grover Cleveland, James Taugher
Civil Service Under Grover Cleveland, James Taugher
Bachelors’ Theses
The handing out of political offices to party adherents by a president of the United States has brought about difficulties in the administration of every president. During the term of President Jackson, the spoils system was particularly rampant, and soon clear- thinking people and reformers demanded a change in this system. A Civil Service League was formed and widely publicized.
Backgrounds Of Foreign Affairs In American Pre-War Thought Magazines, Thomas E. Moore
Backgrounds Of Foreign Affairs In American Pre-War Thought Magazines, Thomas E. Moore
Bachelors’ Theses
I intended in this thesis to examine the background in international relations and foreign affairs which the five journals of opinion of my choice were furnishing to their subscribers, particularly those newspapermen and editors who read these journals for information with which to provide in turn their own readers and for use in the formulation of their own foreign policy and attitude toward international affairs.
I was particularly curious, in view of what great catastrophe was about to descend upon the world in those days, to determine by an examination of the magazine files, specifically what informational material was being …
The Age Of Augustus, Charles John Loomis
The Age Of Augustus, Charles John Loomis
Bachelors’ Theses
The author wishes to take the reader back with him to the Golden Age of the Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus Caesar, where he shall see the young Emperor rise, in the face of strong opposition, from a student and soldier weak in body but strong in mind to one of the ten greatest emperors of all time.
John Jacob Astor In Oregon, Linus A. Zadra
John Jacob Astor In Oregon, Linus A. Zadra
Bachelors’ Theses
The United States was yet a comparatively young nation in 1800. Although victorious in the war for independence, and although formally recognized ln the Treaty of Paris (1783), yet England did not treat her former colonies as a separate nation for her troops still occupied the American frontier posts at Mackinaw, Niagra, Detroit, and Oswego. The war, moreover, put a heavy burden of debt upon the United States. The country was on the verge of bankruptcy. Each colony floated its own issue of worthless paper money. There was little activity under these conditions along the frontier; hence, we find very …
The History Of The Jews, Hyman Popuch
The History Of The Jews, Hyman Popuch
Bachelors’ Theses
As a matter of fact, the history of the Jews for the past 2600 years has been the history of Judah; i.e., of the people who inhabited Southern Palestine. For the most part, they are all descendants either of the tribe of Judah or of the "Kohanim" and "Leviim", the priestly families that resided in Judah. From the very beginning this name had a religious connotation. It is interpreted as "Praising the Lord." Hence the name "Yehudi" or "Jew" accurately describes their origin. When we speak of their role in history, it is largely the records of the descendants of …
The Inca Of Peru: The Spanish Influence, Irving John Fischer
The Inca Of Peru: The Spanish Influence, Irving John Fischer
Bachelors’ Theses
In the course of the centuries there have been many atrocities that stand for a mile posts along the road of history. One of these surely is the robbery by which great wealth of gold was taken by the buccaneers of Spain from the Indian civilizations of Mexico and Peru. How these briggands sacked the homes, plundered the villages is common knowledge even to the child of the primary school. The ransom of Atahuallpa, a room full of gold, is as well known to him as are his children stories. But what even the adult of today fails to see …
Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World, Monica O. Healy
Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World, Monica O. Healy
Bachelors’ Theses
The Orient offers many quaint and mystifying spectacles of which few people are fully aware. To a reader and would - be student of history the Ancient World appears to be a myth.
Modern man in selecting subjects that will be marveled at through the ages rarely realizes that the ancients, considered to be less intelligent and uncultured than him self, erected temples far superior to even the most magnificent cathedral, created art that has to this time been unequaled and buried their dead in even greater splendoe than our millionaires of today could afford.
The selection of the Seven …
The Catacombs, Joseph Paul Listwan
The Catacombs, Joseph Paul Listwan
Bachelors’ Theses
One of the most interesting and fascinating studies in the history of mankind is that concerning catacombs. The city of the dead, usually known as the Catacombs of Rome, is a strange and alluring place to modern travelers and to modern historians. Full appreciation and comprehension of the catacombs can only result after a thorough study of the description, meaning, history, and purpose of the catacombs. Outstanding in this study is the fact that the catacombs are among the most noteworthy of the Christian antiquities of Rome. It is beneath the suburbs of Rome, with their endless streets of tombs, …
Solomon Juneau And Early Milwaukee, Arthur Lorenz Krueger
Solomon Juneau And Early Milwaukee, Arthur Lorenz Krueger
Bachelors’ Theses
"More than a century ago two babes were born, a boy and a girl, each was destined to play important roles in the history of the Great Northwest. The boy was of pure Alsatian French parents, the girl was of French and Indian extraction. The boy was reared in a home of refinement and culture, the girl grew to womanhood amidst the primitive surroundings of the frontier. Fate decreed they should meet.
Life Of Constantine The Great To The Decree Of Milan, 313, Leslie James Liesenfelder
Life Of Constantine The Great To The Decree Of Milan, 313, Leslie James Liesenfelder
Bachelors’ Theses
It is the aim of this thesis to give the chief events, in the life of Constantine the Great, from the time of his birth to the year 313, The Decree of Milan. An attempt has been made to supplement this history with a background of contemporary events in order to stress the importance of the various acts of Constantine. Included in this background is a description of the political changes within the Empire during the reign of Diocletian, and of the activities of the Augustus, Galerius. Included also, is a history of the life of Constantius Chlorus, the father …
The Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Waterway, William Bruce
The Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Waterway, William Bruce
Bachelors’ Theses
In 1535 Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River as far as Montreal. At this point the furtherance or his journey was hindered by rapids. About a hundred years after the appearance of Cartier, missionaries, traders and trappers began to see the possibilities of approaching the center of the continent by an entire water route. In 1679 LaSalle built the "Griffin" on Lake Erie and sailed as far as the Detroit River. Progress on the Great Lakes was hindered by the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution in the Eighteenth Century.
Chinese Civilization: A Brief Sketch Of Its Origin And Development, Marino P. Fiorani
Chinese Civilization: A Brief Sketch Of Its Origin And Development, Marino P. Fiorani
Bachelors’ Theses
It has been my earnest endeavor, in writing this thesis to ·trace in the many phases· the influences of Chinese civilization on Europe. I have attempted to discuss the origin and development of Chinese civilization. It is very difficult in making such a study, to be brief and yet clear. For this reason I have made a special effort to compile all the material and expound it in a unique and interesting manner, remaining brief but yet explicit. It has been my aim to compile this brief study on the civilization of the Chinese people in such a way that …
Famous American Women Of The Twentieth Century, Ruth Carol Grodin
Famous American Women Of The Twentieth Century, Ruth Carol Grodin
Bachelors’ Theses
Women, after centuries of subjection are at last beginning to make a place for themselves under the sun. Where once they were considered the property of men, today they find themselves on an equal plane with man, but not until after a fierce struggle.
Man, being selfish and tenacious by character, was not ready to give up his rights in women. Be had fought honestly, courageously, and sometimes fraudulently and foolishly tor his women and what he considered their duties, but for all his struggling, he still required women to be subservient to himself. It was not until women actually …
The First French Republic, Dorothy Conine
The First French Republic, Dorothy Conine
Bachelors’ Theses
This thesis is intended as a study of the first French Republic during the years of 1792 and 1795.
The writer might call it the Revolution itself, so completely were the years of violence under the Convention the outcome of the attempt to preserve the advantages the Constituent Assembly had gained. To understand the conditions which were outgrown and the origin and growth of the revolutionary spirit, seems, therefore, quite as necessary as to trace the history of the destruction of abuse and the struggle for liberties and rights.
While novelties of historical matters are always to be suspected, the …
The Growth Of Criminal Law In Ancient Greece, Robert F. Larkin
The Growth Of Criminal Law In Ancient Greece, Robert F. Larkin
Bachelors’ Theses
When I first undertook to write a thesis upon this subject I thought that, since the Greeks were noted for their politics, there would be material aplenty upon the subject of ancient law but I was destined to disappointment. After some study I found that most of the books upon the subject were founded chiefly upon the ancient classics and not upon proven facts. Bearing this thought in mind I set out to discover just how ancient criminal law did evolve and my discoveries are set out in the following pages.
Perhaps the greatest help was the fairly recent book …
Irish Nationalism Versus English Imperialism Of The Last Two Decades, William H. Mackin
Irish Nationalism Versus English Imperialism Of The Last Two Decades, William H. Mackin
Bachelors’ Theses
Ireland’s right to freedom can be defended from numerous points, but the outstanding fort of defense rests on her rights as a nation. That Ireland is essentially a nation, I have endeavored to prove; that she has been denied her rights as such, is apparent; how she can regain them, I have tried to determine. As a nation, she has the innate right to freedom, a God-given right. What right England has to domineer Ireland, I have been unable to establish. All evidence on the matter tends to demand severance of Irish and English bonds.
That this question is one …
Collateral Reading In The Teaching Of History, Nellie G. Banks
Collateral Reading In The Teaching Of History, Nellie G. Banks
Bachelors’ Theses
The primary purpose of this thesis is to present the purpose and values of collateral reading as an aid to the teaching of history, and to show that history cannot be taught to obtain the objective set forth by the beat authorities without the use of collateral reading.
The Athletics Of The Ancient Greeks, William G. Blommer
The Athletics Of The Ancient Greeks, William G. Blommer
Bachelors’ Theses
In writing this thesis my object has been to obtain an intimate, view of the ancient Greek athlete. I have attempted to picture him as Homer depicted him in the Iliad and as he lived from the eighth to the fourth century B.C. I also tried to engender a real appreciation of the physical perfection that he attained by describing the events in which he actually competed.
The Democracy Of Andrew Jackson, Dorothy A. Mccabe
The Democracy Of Andrew Jackson, Dorothy A. Mccabe
Bachelors’ Theses
Hardly any year in American history so distinctly marks the transition from one era to another as 1829; yet here as elsewhere the new dispensation can be traced back to its foundations in the previous state of things. Therefore, I have opened my discourse with a brief account of Jackson’s early public life so that his later life may be better understood. It has been my object to show in the faithful story of his life the trace he left in the nation’s- history, particularly, his institution of an epoch of democracy. I have not slighted his failings or his …
Woodrow Wilson And The Philippines, Gladys A. Kroupa
Woodrow Wilson And The Philippines, Gladys A. Kroupa
Bachelors’ Theses
Seven thousand miles west of our Pacific coast - so far west that it is East - lies the western frontier of these United States of America. There in their watery beds lie Christian Luzon, Mohammedan Mindanao and the semi-savage Sulu Archipelago - the chief islands of the group of the Philippine Islands. They are next-door neighbors to the Orient - China and Japan to the north, Siam and India to the northwest, Madagascar to the west and Australia and Borneo - the traditional home of the wild-man - to the south.
Anti-Religious Tendencies Of The Restoration Drama, C. Edward Vaeth
Anti-Religious Tendencies Of The Restoration Drama, C. Edward Vaeth
Bachelors’ Theses
’’Anti-religious tendencies of the Restoration drama” is a subject which in this age of science and skepticism should interest us. A rough parallel might be drawn from a comparison of Restoration drama, life, and ensuing reaction and the modern theatre, life, and the reaction which is yet to be experienced. However, this thesis undertakes to examine only the Restoration drama and its anti-religious tendencies. An inspection of all the Restoration plays seemed superfluous to me since those dramas which I selected seemed representative of the general output of the period, being written, as they are, by both major and minor …
Old Father Rhine, Its Castles And Legends Linked Forever With The Story Of Germany, Helen Visel
Old Father Rhine, Its Castles And Legends Linked Forever With The Story Of Germany, Helen Visel
Bachelors’ Theses
Any natural phenomenon stirs one's imagination so that at times man takes great pains and expends much energy to find the cause of the event of the source from which it proceeds, and so it is with a river. The first question that rises is, "Where is its source?"
The Eighteenth Amendment And The Volstead Act, Agnes G. Taugher
The Eighteenth Amendment And The Volstead Act, Agnes G. Taugher
Bachelors’ Theses
The prohibition act, which was set into motion by the enactment of the Volstead Law to enforce the Eighteenth Amendment of the Constitution, is a form of legislation which attempts to direct the morals of the people. In this it is unique, for it either imposes restrictions upon unwilling minorities by a majority or vice versa. The Volstead Law, which was the crowning act in this attempt, came as the result of slow but persistent victories in the separate states.
The Intellectual And Social Achievements During The Age Of Louis Xiv, William M. Bell
The Intellectual And Social Achievements During The Age Of Louis Xiv, William M. Bell
Bachelors’ Theses
History is primarily a cultural study of events, characters and movements that have taken place during the ages. The purpose of this study, however, is not to memorize dates of particular events or characters but to view it with a study from a philosophical view point. Various ages are outstanding in European history in which man has been politically, socially, and intellectually benefited, therefore we make special mention of the Seventeenth Century in which the Age of Louis XlV is characteristic. Due to the policies of Devine Right advocated by Mazarin and Richelieu, Louis XlV was able to rule as …
A Comparison Of Roman Slavery: As We Find It In The Republic Of The Comic Poets And The Empire, Edward G. Fleisner
A Comparison Of Roman Slavery: As We Find It In The Republic Of The Comic Poets And The Empire, Edward G. Fleisner
Bachelors’ Theses
In exploring human nature as a whole, we are rather surprised to find that despite the centuries which have rolled by, human nature remains quite the same. Evolutionists may possibly contradict this statement in asserting that the weathering process of the centuries has produced a mellowing effect, and that the world is a much better place to live in now than it had been thirty centuries ago. That may or may not be true, all, of course, depending on the method and terms used in defining progress and uplift. If by progress we mean complicated society and intricate ma chines, …

Theodore Roosevelt And The Panama Canal, Marie M. Finerty
Bachelors’ Theses
When the population of the United States extended to the Pacific coast, the question of transportation from east to west became a matter for consideration.
