I am again in a comfortable position to tell you that the financial situation of our Society is just as favorable as it was a year ago as per December 27, 1968. This is all the more remarkable as our expenses are cca. $ 200.-- higher than last year and due to the general decline of the bond priced our tax-exempt New York State Power Authority Bond value in correlation with the general trend in the stock market, also declined somewhat. Before the advent of Mr. Collier, Everglades had been a sport-fisherman's outpost. There was an inn, the Rod & Gun Club, catering to yacht-borne fishing enthusiasts, and three or four small bungalows harbored families who made their modest living as guides. In the course of my work on U.S.-Swiss relations I often comes across the name of New York and the activities of the Swiss living in that city or its neighborhood. New York was the place where the earliest permanent official contact was established between the two countries when a consulate was opened under Henri Casimer de Rham of Ynerdon in the summer of 1822. New York was the first consular district in the U.S. to become a permanent consulate general in 1933. The fourth Annual Meeting of the reactivated Swiss-American Historical Society, to which the members had been invited by circular letters of September 12 and of the latter part of that month, took place in the Conference Hall of the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C., on October 21, 1967.

On October 7, 1967, the exhibition "Swiss Drawings, Masterpieces of Five Centuries" opened at t he National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It will stay here until October 29, 1967, and will then travel to New York to be shown at the Pierpont Morgan Library from November 15 1967 - January 2 1968. After their showing in New York , the drawings will be exhibited at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco from January 14 - February 12, 1968, and at the Art Institute in Chicago from February 2i4 - March 26, 1968.

In der Gemeinde New Glarus in Wisconsin finden seit dreissig Jahren über das Labor Day Weekend Anfang September Freilicht-aufführungen von Schillers Drama Wilhelm Tell statt. Au Einladung des Gemeindepräsidenten Waldo Freitag wurde dieses Tell-Spiel dieses Jahr von Herrn und Frau Generalkonsul E. Theiler in Chicago und von mir besucht. Herr und Frau Botschafter F. (October 7 -29, 1967) to New York (Pierpont Morgan Library: November 15, 1967 - January 2, 1968), San Francisco (M.H. de young Memorial Museum: January 14 - February 12, 1968) and Chicago (Art Institute: February 24 - March 26, 1968) 1) poses two problems:

1) Why did drawing and generally graphic expression play such an important role in the work of Swiss artists from Urs Graf to Giacometti?

2) What was the role of Swiss art within the European creative community, in other words, what is its qualitative position?
