Observations On The School Systems In The United States And Switzerland, Erich A. Klee

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

One of the recurrent themes in the long history of U.S.-Swiss relations has to do with the reciprocal interest in each other's educational systems. Americans went to visit the schools and institutes of Pestalozzi and Fellenberg in the early 19th century and returned full with ideas of how to improve schools over here. They had successors who time and again hoped to get inspiration for their own work by studying how the Swiss went about the important task of educating the young.

Resignation Of The Sahs Secretary And Newsletter Editor, Dr. Lukas F. Burckhardt, Lukas F. Burckhardt, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This past summer the Swiss American Historical Society lost the services of its Secretary and Newsletter Editor, Lukas F. Burckhardt. Dr. Burckhardt, after many years as Labor and Cultural Counselor at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, was promoted to become chief of the Chultural Section of the Swiss Political Department in Bern and he felt that he, therefore, hadto relinquish his SAHS offices. Knowing better than anybody else how much Lukas Burckhardt meant for ouor Society, I was very reluctant to accept his resignation, yet in the end could do nothing but honor his wishes.

Address by Dr. Imhoof: We are concerned here with Prof. Heinz Meier's latest book, Friendship Under Stress, U.S.-Swiss Relations 1900-1950, published by Herbert Lang & Co. in Fern this winter. It has been very favorably reviewed, as many of you may know. Prof. Max Silberschmidt published a very positive appreciation in its thoroughness as well as in its perspective - a much-needed book, and my remarks are meant to recommend it very warmly to you.

Attendance

The Sixth Annual Meeting of the reactivated Swiss American Historical Society, to which the members had been invited by circular letters of October 25 and November 28, took place on December 27, 2969, in the Conference Hall of the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C. Time and place were chosen because of the coincidence with the Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association of December 28 - 30 in the same town. This facilitated the attendance of our professional historians, but was less practical for those among our members who had to use the holiday season for family …

Report Of The President Of The Swiss American Historical Society For 1969, Dr. Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The year of 1969 was an outwardly quiet one as far as SAHS matters were concerned. I knew when I was reelected to the presidency of the society at the last annual meeting in New York a year ago that its affairs had been well handled and that everything was in good order. This excellent state of affairs was the result of the work of a fine board of officers who performed their duties with care and dispatch. I was lucky to inherit a state of reliable men from m predecessor, Dr. Augustin Maissen. Everyone of them, Dr. Leo Schelbert, …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Dear members:

I am again in a comfortable position to tell you that the financial situation of our Society is just as favorable as it was a year ago as per December 27, 1968. This is all the more remarkable as our expenses are cca. $ 200.-- higher than last year and due to the general decline of the bond priced our tax-exempt New York State Power Authority Bond value in correlation with the general trend in the stock market, also declined somewhat. Nevertheless, due to the very thorough drive to collect the membership fees, we not only off-set these …

One of the main purposes of the Swiss American Historical Society and of its Newsletter is to draw the attention of Swiss and friends of Switzerland, who are interested in Swiss American history and cultural relations, to recent publications in this field. We again have a good occasion to do this. Professor Leo Schelbert, our Secretary, has kindly arranged for us reprints of his recent article on the emigration of the Swiss Mennonites to America (see under II.). Our member Fritz Blum has given us copies of a special issue on Switzerland of the New York paper for which he …

Before the advent of Mr. Collier, Everglades had been a sport-fisherman's outpost. There was an inn, the Rod & Gun Club, catering to yacht-borne fishing enthusiasts, and three or four small bungalows harbored families who made their modest living as guides. Now Everglades was going to be reshaped in a manner to do honor to its role as Country seat. There were many reminders of Mrs. Collier's favorite field of action: New York City. Approaching by boat, a street sign with the incongruous legend "Riverside Drive" had come into view. There also was the unavoidable Broadway. Along the boat pier …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In the course of my work on U.S.-Swiss relations I often comes across the name of New York and the activities of the Swiss living in that city or its neighborhood. New York was the place where the earliest permanent official contact was established between the two countries when a consulate was opened under Henri Casimer de Rham of Ynerdon in the summer of 1822. New York was the first consular district in the U.S. to become a permanent consulate general in 1933. New York was the place that received first the majority of Swiss immigrants to the United States …

To the Members and Friends of the SAHS ,

1 ) This issue of our Newsletter is entirely dedicated to the autobiography of one of our members , the civil-engineer Alphonse Kubly from Netstal in the canton of Glarus whose home is now in New York. It is a fascinating document, full of thoughtful observations on his youth in a typical Glarner milieu, where he grew up under the high moral standards of a family prominent in the tratidional textile industry, on his adolescence in the chaotic period of the twenties in Switzerland and in Germany, and on his new …

(October 7 -29, 1967) to New York (Pierpont Morgan Library: November 15, 1967 - January 2, 1968), San Francisco (M.H. de young Memorial Museum: January 14 - February 12, 1968) and Chicago (Art Institute: February 24 - March 26, 1968) 1) poses two problems:

1) Why did drawing and generally graphic expression play such an important role in the work of Swiss artists from Urs Graf to Giacometti?

2) What was the role of Swiss art within the European creative community, in other words, what is its qualitative position?

The gentleman to v:hom I am about to allude, although long a resident of this country, has no feelings, no attachments, no sympathies, no principles in common with our people. Near fifty years ago Pennsylvania took him to her bosom, and warmed and cherished and honored him; and how does he manifest his gratitude? By aiming a vital blow at a system endeared to her by a thorough conviction that it is indispensable to her prosperity. He has filled, at home and abroad, the highest offices under this government during thirty years, and he is still at heart an alien …

With this newsletter we enter the second year of the revived Swiss- American Historical Society. We hope that it wil.l be as good a year for the Society as 1965 was. In order to do this we not only must maintain our present membership , but enlarge it and keep it growing. We also have to work toward achieving the noblest and most important goal of the existence of our Society, namely to make available in published form results of research and investigation of matters concerning Switzerland and the United States . From information we receive we conclude that there …
