This report summarizes the historical information available on one of the most important cemetery sites in the state, the Cayo del Oso site (41NU2) in Nueces County, Texas. This document serves as the background volume to the Texas Department of Transportation’s ongoing monitoring efforts in conjunction with road improvement activities along Spur 3, including a section of Ennis Joslin Road and Alameda Street, in Corpus Christi. The results of the ongoing monitoring will be published in a separate volume following the termination of construction activities. The work was conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 2982 with Dr. Steve A. Tomka, CAR Director, serving as Principal Investigator.

This report documents the exhumation and reburial of three historic graves within the right of way of Interstate Highway 10 (IH-10) near the intersection of Eldridge Drive. Called the Eldridge or Oscar Abstein Cemetery, historic research indicated that three to four graves probably existed near station marker 581+75 within the area of improvements that the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) proposed to IH-10. TxDOT’s Archeological Studies Program, Environmental Affairs Division, prepared a planning document entitled: “Exhumation and Reinterment Plan, IH-10, CSJ: 0271-07-247, Eldridge Cemetery” and contracted with Prewitt and Associates, Inc., of Austin, Texas, to conduct the necessary investigations. In December 2002 and January 2003, CAS fulfilled a contractual agreement with AGTX to conduct an intensive cultural resources inventory on 19 sites recommended for reevaluation. A total of 267 shovel tests were placed on 17 of those sites. An additional 44 shovel tests were placed around 41BP138, an historic winery operation. Finally, additional mapping and inventories were conducted at two sites: 1) 41BP148, a mining operation and residential area, and 2) 41BP146, an isolated historic burial. The completion of this project finalizes the listing of sites that required further testing, mapping, and reevaluation.

The Royal Coachman site, 41CM111, is bisected by FM 306 near the highway’s eastern crossing of the Guadalupe River. Archeologists from the Texas Department of Transportation conducted extensive excavations at the site in 1980 and the Center for Archaeological Research carried out fieldwork related to geomorphic assessment of the deposits in 2002. The site contains at least three archeological components, an upper zone that may be of late Middle Archaic age and two commingled lower zones that are early Middle Archaic in age and contain a mix of Nolan/ Pandale and Bell-Andice/Early Triangular points. The Wolf site (41SM195) is a prehistoric Caddo site located in eastern Smith County, Texas, in the John Wolf land survey, approximately 12 miles east of Tyler, Texas. This article discusses recent excavations I conducted at the site, and summarizes the archeological findings, including features, the age of the archeological deposits, the various lithic and ceramic artifacts that were recovered, and offers speculations about why this part of Smith County was apparently abandoned by the Caddo peoples in the 15th century.

Under contract with Mr. Harry Affleck of San Antonio, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) performed archaeological services on the property located at 9501/9505 Perrin-Beitel Road in central San Antonio. The property is the site of the Perrin Family Gravesite and will be impacted by the construction of a self-storage unit and associated improvements. Archaeological services were performed between January and March 2003 and involved archival research to compile information on the history of the Perrin Family Gravesite and fieldwork to establish the location of all burials present on site.

In August of 2002, a crew from the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio tested four sites at Camp Bowie in Brown County Texas. Three sites, 41BR471, 41BR500, and 41BR522, were prehistoric and one site, 41BR392, had both historic and prehistoric components. This work was done under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 2926 for the Adjutant General’s Department of Texas. Testing at these sites was done based on recommendations made for 41BR500 by Mauldin and Broehm (2001) and recommendations made for 41BR392, 41BR471 and 41BR522 by Greaves (2002).

The work was conducted for the Texas Army National Guard. The excavation was conducted in June and July of 2000 under Texas Antiquities Committee Permit No. 2406. Artifacts collected during the project were processed and curated at CAS. In addition, CAS conducted archival research on structures located within the project boundaries. Knowledge of early Caddo culture comes from both archaeological and ethnographic sources. Enough archaeological research had been completed by the early 1970s to provide a fairly thorough chronology for the major pre-Columbian developments in the Caddoan area. and archaeological research has been extensive since that time.

Accounts of the DeSoto expedition of 1541-1542 constitute the earliest source of ethnohistoric data on the Caddo. Translations of the De Soto documents may be found in Bourne, Robertson, Varner and Varner, and more recently, Clayton.
