The purpose of this project was to obtain information to guide planning to alleviate drainage problems within the compound of the mission. Four separate areas were tested. Of these, only one uncovered structural remains that might be impacted by the drainage swales planned to carry rain water through the east and south walls and away from the standing structures. At that location, careful measurement of comparative elevations of ground and top of wall revealed that the planned drainage would be possible without damage to the wall. The research and survey were conducted by Research Associate Waynne Cox on April 21, 22 and 23. No evidence of either prehistoric or historic occupation was located within the survey area; however, archival research revealed further information concerning the nature and age of the mill for which the park was named. During August of 1992, staff archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) conducted surface survey, mapping, and subsurface testing adjacent to Asylum and No-Name Creeks under contract with the San Antonio River Authority in conjunction with a channel rectification project. Particular attention was given to locating cultural materials associated with the nearby San Juan Acequia. No significant cultural resources were located at either location.

The Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio was contracted by the Parks and Recreation Department, City of San Antonio to conduct archival and survey testing on 43 acres of land in western San Antonio at Leon Creek prior to establishing a municipal baseball stadium. The past history of the site was investigated and a survey and shovel testing was conducted on July 8-9, 1993. No indications of archaeological resources were discovered, therefore, no further investigations were recommended.

In 1987, the Center for Archaeological Research entered into a contract with the San Antonio Metropolitan Transit Authority to provide consultant services for the downtown San Antonio Tri-Party Improvements project. Preliminary research was provided prior to initiation of construction, and monitoring was conducted during the three years of modifications to the downtown area. The archaeological resources exposed during the project were researched and documented, and recommendations were made throughout the construction period.

In June of 1988 and 1989, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an archaeological field school at the northern end of the plaza in front of the Alamo in downtown San Antonio. The Center for Archaeological Research cooperated with the university in organizing and staffing this field school. Excavations were limited to specific areas related to the fortifications around the main entrance to the Alamo constructed in 1835 and demolished and backfilled less than a year afterward. In October 1990, pursuant to a contract with the National Park Service, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, initiated test investigations in the southeast interior corner of the Mission Espada compound. The study focused on examining structural foundations and determining the depth of Mexican and Spanish colonial ground surfaces in the area.

Colonial period foundations were discovered under the south wall, as well as the probable original construction period surface and footing trench. 'IWentieth-century foundations were found in the unit excavated under the east wall. These likely continue south to the north wall of …

During early 1991, an archaeologist from The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), monitored the expansion of the Casa Rio Restaurant in downtown San Antonio. The expansion exposed, but did not damage, the foundation of the first Beckmann home constructed in 1859. Research for the property also revealed that the basement and support structures for the second Beckmann home probably exist within the parking lot immediately to the south of the expanded facility. No further historical work is required for this project but any future modifIcation to the area must address the critical …

A tract of land in northern San Antonio was briefly examined by the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Several prehistoric archaeological sites had previously been recorded and test excavated within or near the property. Remnants of two of those sites (41 EX 47 and 41 EX 231) within the study area were rediscovered and subjected to limited subsurface testing. At 41 EX 231, what are apparently well-preserved prehistoric cultural deposits were identified. Thus, it is recommended that additional intensive excavations be performed prior to any future disturbances at that site, or that …

The Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio, investigated the cultural resource potential of two proposed pipeline crossings along Venado Creek in Jackson County, Texas, for Mobil Exploration & Producing U. S. Inc. Surface surveys and shovel tests were performed at both crossings during the investigation. No cultural materials were encountered within the proposed impact zones, which were observed to have been substantially disturbed in recent decades by natural and artificial activities. Thus, no further archaeological work is recommended prior to or during the pending construction.

The purpose of this project was to locate and identify the acequia madre, or main irrigation ditch, where it ran between the east wall of Mission San Jose and San Jose Drive and to trace out the location of another ditch, part of which was found during road construction in the area in 1981. After confirmation of the location of the main ditch through deed and archival research, a backhoe was used to precisely locate the ditch on the site. The second ditch was relocated and its course followed to the north boundary of the park property in this area. …

The Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an archival investigation on a portion of New City Block 7657 in southeast San Antonio for the Texas Trust Savings Bank of Marble Falls, Texas. The property contained the site of the historic Pyron House and thought to possibly also contain the buried remains of the San Jose acequia. The study revealed that the homestead was probably constructed in 1849, and although recently destroyed, the foundation remains in the ground. The research further revealed that the acequia did not pass through the property under study, but instead …

Based on the archival research, the history of the area was divided into several distinct periods. Data from primary sources are summarized and cross-referenced in an appendix.

During September 1989, a pedestrian survey was conducted within a I~S-acre tract acquired by the City of Del Rio, Val Verde County, for a landfill expansion project. The surface reconnaissance recorded one prehistoric site, 41 VV 1251. As a result, recommendation was made for Phase II subsurface testing.

The Phase II subsurface testing, which included a geomorphic study, was accomplished during February 1990. Cultural resources were recovered indicating presence at site 41 VV 1251 from the Late Paleo-Indian period to the Late Archaic period. However, the site was determined to be almost totally deflated. Six test trenches were excavated across the ace quia, and it was found that the stone lining on the east wall is, in most areas, in relatively good condition, but the west wall has been removed. A cultural resource pedestrian survey was conducted within a 105-acre tract acquired by the City of Del Rio, Val Verde County. for a landfill expansion project September 25 and 26,1989. The results of this surface reconnaissance resulted in the recording of one prehistoric site (41 VV 1251).

Early Archaic points were found to be eroding at a depth of 60 cm in an erosional cut, and temporally undiagnostic bifaces and biface fragments were exposed on and just under the surface. In May 1988, archival research was initiated to evaluate the archaeological potential of New City Block 102, Lots 10 through 15, in downtown San Antonio, Texas, proposed site of the new Bexar County Justice Center parking garage. The research indicated that the southern portion of Lots 10 and 11 would required further investigation at the 1874 site of Vollrath's blacksmith shop. Field excavations were conducted in August 1988. This report discusses the archival research and the results of the field excavations.

In February 1987, the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted archival research to determine the historic significance of structures in New City Block 552 in downtown San Antonio. One structure, the Gallagher building, proved worthy of preservation. The Center then monitored the demolition of the other standing structures in the area of Martin and Bowie Streets. Limited backhoe trenching was conducted to locate the Acequia Madre, which proved to be outside the property limits. Later, monitoring to the north revealed its location farther to the west.
