Nahf A-767/1978, Fakhri Hasson

Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In 1978, an excavation was conducted in the village of Nahf (map ref. 230/760). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by F. Hasson. A burial cave with five loculi was discovered. The cave was dated to the Late Roman period.

In 1978, an excavation was conducted on Har Ha-Zetim in Jerusalem (map ref. 22309/63175). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by A. Kloner. A tomb that was dated to the Roman period was exposed.

In 1977, a trial excavation was conducted in el–Ghaba et–Tahta (map ref. 21409/72338), southwest of Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek, following the discovery of a hewn burial cave during foundation works for a chicken coop. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by A. Ziegelmann.

In July 1976, a salvage excavation was conducted at Khirbat ’Ashan (Bir Abu Shukheidim) under the direction of R. Cohen, following erosion caused by the wadi and rainwater that affected the site. The excavation focused on the southern part of the site, near the banks of Nahal ’Ashan (’Ashan stream).

In April–November 1976, an excavation was conducted at the Hapitu’ah quarry near Ein Hanatziv (map ref. unknown). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by D. Davis. A shaft tomb (No. 61) was excavated, one of the tombs of an ancient cemetery that was previously excavated in 1953.

In 1976, a salvage excavation was conducted north of Moshav Gideona, at the foot of Mount Gilboa (map ref. 234/716), following the discovery of a Byzantine burial cave during the expansion of the Ein Harod quarry. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by P. Porat and N. Yadin, with the assistance of Y. Vatkin (surveying) as well as students and volunteers from Geva and Mesilot.

In November–December, 1965 a salvage excavation was conducted in the Old City of Tiberias, near the Plaza hotel (map ref. unknown), following the discovery of remains of a defensive wall during the digging of drainage channels. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by E. Dinur with the assistance of M. Feist (plans).

In 1976, an excavation was conducted in the East Talpiyot neighborhood in Jerusalem (map ref. 222/628), under the direction of G. Edelstein. A burial cave was exposed containing loculi, in which pottery and glass vessels were found.

In 1955, an archaeological excavation was conducted at Tel Qasile in Tel Aviv (map ref. unknown), under the direction of J. Kaplan. The archive file records the exposure of a kiln for ceramic vessels' production, in the vicinity of which pottery sherds were recovered and dated to the tenth century BCE.

In 1976, a further excavation was carried out at Tel Qasile (map ref. 1806/6675), likewise under the direction of J. Kaplan. The archive file contains an excavation report of a Middle Bronze Age burial cave, together with a detailed inventory of the finds.

In November 1975, a salvage excavation was conducted in the Ziv neighborhood of Haifa (map ref. 2016/7427), under the direction of A. Ronen. A cave was documented by the excavator, as well as the remains of a building, a circle of stones and a loculi or possibly a niche.

In 1975, an excavation was conducted near the abandoned village of Burayr, at the side of the road leading to Be’er Sheva. A barrel-shaped burial cave containing four chambers and a central passage was exposed. The cave was dated to the Byzantine period.

At the end of 1975 and the beginning of 1976, a trial excavation was conducted in Jerusalem, in the Ramot Polin neighborhood (map ref. 21879/63636), under the direction of A. Kloner and Y. Gat. A rock-hewn cave was exposed. Within the cave, an olive press was identified.

In December 1975 and early 1976, an excavation was conducted in Jerusalem at Naḥal Raqafot (Bayit ve-Gan neighborhood; map ref. 21829/62980), under the direction of A. Kloner and Y. Gat. The excavation was undertaken following the discovery of a cave during preparations for the construction of a college. The cave, which was damaged during the development works, comprised a single chamber.

The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by B. Arensburg, with the assistance of E. Ayalon and T. Han.

In 1975, an excavation was conducted in Netivot (map ref. 1607/5925), following the exposure of a cemetery which was damaged during construction work. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiques and Museums, was directed by D. Alon. Many cist graves were discerned in the area, that were smashed and damaged by the bulldozers and tractors. The lids and walls of the graves were shattered or dragged by the vehicles, their contents spilled or plundered. In July 1975, a salvage excavation was conducted in the area of the abandoned Arab village of Lubia, east of the Golani Interchange (map ref. 239/743), following the exposure of burial caves during the paving of a track by the Jewish National Fund. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by D. Davis. The excavation area borders the northern fringe of the Muslem village cemetery. Two burial caves and a single cist grave were excavated.

The tomb’s ceiling was destroyed by the Agricultural implements. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by D. Meiron, with the assistance of members of Negba and a youth group from the U.S.A.
