The Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) at Texas State University-San Marcos (University) conducted archaeological survey and monitoring investigations on nine properties owned by the University under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 5509 during the year 2010. Investigations were conducted to determine if intact cultural resources were present within the project areas and if they would be adversely affected by construction and development. Under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the University, CAS is authorized to determine whether proposed undertakings have the potential to negatively impact cultural resources, and if so, to recommend to the University …

This report presents the results of archaeological investigations and analyses of the Zapotec site, 41HY163, in Hays County, Texas. Excavations conducted by the Center for Archaeological Studies, Texas State University-San Marcos from August, 2007 to February, 2008, under contract with the City of San Marcos, were required to offset negative impacts to the site as a result of the City’s construction of the Wonder World Drive Extension north from Hunter Road to Ranch Road 12. Initially self-funded by the City, the Federal Highway Administration agreed to reimburse the City for some construction costs. At the request of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), Cultural Resources Program, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Studies at Texas State University-San Marcos conducted a cultural resources inventory at Lake Corpus Christi State Park, San Patricio County, Texas. Field investigations were conducted between June 7 and 18, 2010, under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 5652. Carole Leezer served as Principal Investigator, and the field crew of consisted of Julian A. Sitters, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Sarah Scogin, and Jacob Hooge. CAS archaeologists conducted a pedestrian survey and excavated 128 shovel test units within the 368-acre project area. This …

An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted at Martin Creek Lake State Park by the Center for Archaeological Studies and Archeological & Environmental Consultants, LLC in June 2010 under contract with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Although previous investigations had been carried out in the park, no comprehensive survey had been completed that would allow TPWD and park management personnel to appropriately manage the park’s cultural resources in accordance with state law. During the 2010 survey, the park was stratified into areas with high, medium, and low probability of containing archaeological sites. A total of 423 shovel tests were excavated …

The Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) at Texas State University-San Marcos conducted intensive archaeological survey and subsurface testing investigations of the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the Spring Lake Section 206 Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Project (SLAERP). The SLAERP proposes to restore the aquatic ecosystem components of Spring Lake and riparian corridor/grassland habitat located directly adjacent to the lake to a more natural condition within the constraints of existing land uses. Troup Factory, the first cotton mill in Troup County, and the second such plant in Georgia, was established in 1846 on Flat Shoal's Creek. The mill was in operation throughout the latter half of the 19th century before being relocated to the city of LaGrange. Troup Factory sheetings and homespun were standards of excellence across a widespread area of Georgia. The purpose of this paper is to document the history of the mill site through archival research and archaeological survey. Through these means a better understanding of a once prestigious mill site was obtained in order to illuminate an important …

Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted archeological test excavations at 41BQ285 in June 2006 for the Texas Department of Transportation under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 4102. Site 41BQ285, in southeastern Bosque County, was located during an archeological survey for the proposed replacement of the FM 56 bridge over the North Bosque River. It is a prehistoric campsite buried in a cumulic soil in the upper deposits of a late Holocene alluvial terrace. Mechanical excavations consisted of re-opening four backhoe trenches from the survey phase followed by hand excavation of six 1x1-m test units. This work identified three burned rock features and …

This investigation was conducted in advance of proposed improvements to U.S. Highway 77 in central Lee County, Texas, under regulations of the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended (16 USC §470 et seq.) and the Antiquities Code of Texas (Title 9, chapter 191, Texas Natural Resource Code). SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted an intensive cultural resources survey on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), of the proposed Wurzbach Parkway Extension Project in San Antonio, Texas. TxDOT proposes to extend the existing Wurzbach Parkway approximately 5.3 miles between Farm-to-Market Road (FM) 2696 (Blanco Road) and Wetmore Road. The undertaking involves the new construction of a four-lane divided roadway within an approximately 250-foot right-of-way (ROW) that is state-owned property. Overall, the Area of Potential Effects (APE) is 27,984 feet long, 250 feet wide, and maximally 10 feet deep. Additionally, the APE covers roughly 51.77 acres of permanent …

This dissertation focuses on the nature of architectural space in the Caddo area of eastern Texas, in the southwestern portion of the Caddo archaeological area. The early European accounts and the archaeological record indicate there was a wide range in size, shape, form, and use of architectural space in the Caddo area. Buildings have a variety of structural attributes and may be found isolated or associated with plazas or earthen mounds. This dissertation is a detailed examination of this architectural diversity. The Shelby site (41CP71) is an important Late Caddo period, Titus phase, religious and political center on Greasy Creek in the Northeast Texas Pineywoods. The site, occupied from the 15th century A.D. until at least the late 17th century A.D., is a large and well-preserved settlement with abundant habitation features as well as plant and animal remains, evidence of mound building activities in the form of a 1.5 m high structural mound, and a large community cemetery with at least 119 burial pits and perhaps as many as 200. Site 41LR351 was first recorded during the 2005 Texas Archeological Society summer field school on the Stallings Ranch in Lamar County, Texas. This prehistoric site is on a natural knoll (420-430 feet amsl) in the headwaters of Pine Creek, a northward-flowing tributary of the Red River. The site is currently being excavated by the Valley of the Caddo Archeological Society, and a large prehistoric Caddo ceramic assemblage has been recovered that warrants study. In addition to characterizing the assemblage of vessel sherds in terms of decorative style and various technological attributes (i.e., temper and paste, firing conditions, surface treatment, etc.), …
