During August–September 2022, trial trenches were opened, followed by a trial excavation in three quarries at el-‘Isawiya neighborhood in Jerusalem (Permit No. A-9405/2022; Map ref. 223976-4041/634281-376), prior to the construction of a ring road. The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by Moria - Jerusalem Development Company Ltd. was directed by M. Hussein, with the assistance of B. Touri and Y. Zelinger (scientific consultation) and S. Halevi (photography and photogrammetry).

In December 2022, a salvage excavation was conducted in Yotvata (Permit No. A-9447/2022; Map ref. 205165-6210/423650-935) prior to laying a water pipeline. The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by the Mekorot Water Company, was directed by T. Sapir (field photography), with the assistance of Y. Alamor (administration), E. Aladjem (surveying and field photography), I. Azulay (maps and plans), N. Lect Ben Ami (area supervision and field photography), G. Seriy and Y. In July 2022, a trial excavation was conducted on the declared antiquities site of Wadi Abu Shulula (Permit No. A-9310/2022; Map ref. 279492-782/755258-5258), following damage caused to the site. The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by the Ministry of Defense, was directed by A. Kleiner (photography and photogrammetric documentation), with the assistance of Y. Yaakobi (administration) and workers from the town of Kabul.

In December 2022, a trial excavation was conducted in an area designated for the construction of sheep pens east of Hura (Permit No. A-9459/2022; Map ref. 19558-663/5678973-9020). The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by The Authority for the Regulation of Bedouin Settlement in the Negev was directed by A. Fraiberg, with the assistance of Y. Alamor (administration), I. Azoulay (plans), A. Golani and D. Eisenberg-Degen (scientific guidance) and a team of Palestinian laborers.

The excavation, undertaken on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by the Sederot Economic Development Company, was directed by S. Tal, with the assistance of Y. This paper explores the use of the synthesized pigment Egyptian blue in the encaustic and tempera funerary portraits of Graeco-Roman ruled Egypt in the 1st-3rd centuries CE. Recent developments in non-destructive imaging analysis technology have aided research institutions and museums in detecting the presence of this pigment. New questions have arisen based on these findings of Egyptian blue in the depiction of flesh and hair of these subjects, particularly because blue is so rarely used as a standalone pigment in works of this category. The site is located near the wastewater treatment plant, in agricultural fields, in the northwestern part of the Har ‘Amasa settlement (Fig. 1). The excavation was opened as a result of the damage caused by infrastructure works carried out by Mekorot, during which two terraces were cut by a backhoe.

At the dawn of the twentieth century, the Chinese formulation of art history underwent dramatic changes. It moved away from the traditional narratives that did not follow a strict chronology to adopt the Western linear model which emphasizes progress and national identity. Based on the premodern tradition, the modern formulations of Chinese art history began as a political strategy for nation building amid the political upheavals, including military attacks on China that led to the end of Qing imperial rule and the beginning of the Republican era (1912-1949).
