In June 1972, an excavation was conducted at Givat Hamudot, near Kibbutz Matzuva (map ref. 2134/7721). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by M. Prausnitz, with the assistance of Y. Ben Yosef and members of Kibbutz Matzuba Y. Vetkin and R. Pira (surveying).

Qanat El-Ja‘Ar A-363/1972, Dan Bahat

In 1972, an excavation was conducted in the ancient cemetery of Qanat al-Ja'ar (north of Ein Hanatziv; map ref. 247/709), under the direction of D. Bahat. In the excavation, and in those that preceded it, three types of tombs were exposed. The finds in the tombs included many pottery vessels, bronze vessels, glass vessels, weapons including a spear and a knife, cosmetics vessels, a mirror, a fibula pin, and jewellery.

In August 1971, an excavation was conducted at the village of Kafr Yasif in the Western Galilee under the direction of V. Tzaferis, with the assistance of F. Hasson. Within the courtyard of a private residence, a rock-cut burial cave was uncovered.

In 1971 an excavation was conducted in ‘Akko, in the area of the new post office near the corner of the streets Ben Ami and Yehoshafat (map ref. 2076/7590. The excavation, under the direction of A. Oren, was carried out following the discovery of the building remains during the construction of the post office building. The excavator believed the building that was exposed was a public building, possibly a temple, that was dated to the Hellenistic period. In May 1970, a salvage excavation was conducted in Qanat el-Ja‘ar (Ein Hanatziv; map ref. 2479/7091), following the discovery of graves during development works at the quarry. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by P. Porat. Three shaft tombs dating to the Early Bronze Age, that were damaged by the mechanical quarrying equipment, were excavated.

In 1969, an underwater excavation was conducted in Sharm el-Sheikh bay, under the direction of A. Raban. The remains of a ship and its cargo were exposed. According to the excavator, the ship apparently sank due to a fire. The finds were dated to the 17^th century CE, at the earliest (see excavation file for a detailed report, plans and drawings of finds).

In March–April 1970, a salvage excavation was conducted near En-HaBesor (map ref. unknown), following preparations for the construction of a national park. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by D. Meiron and Y. Yehezkel. The excavation was carried out as part of the site reconstruction, including the Byzantine cistern in which a mosaic floor was discovered in 1917. The mosaic was transferred to Canberra, Australia (see Briggs 1918). The floor belonged to a church, of which no remains were preserved apart from one column base.
