In 2016, Gray & Pape, Inc., of Houston, Texas, performed a preliminary archaeological and historical desktop assessment of 22.2-kilometers (13.8 miles) proposed for the West Harris County Regional Water Authority, Second Source Transmission Line Project – Segment 3 Alignment, in Harris County, Texas. The conclusion of that study was that most of the project’s Area of Potential Effects occurred within areas that had previously been disturbed by the construction of roads, parking lots, and artificial drainages. Gray & Pape, Inc. recommended that only the areas on either side of Buffalo Bayou warranted further investigation due to the potential for intact …

The investigation was conducted after a private citizen reported finding a human jaw bone along the shoreline at 41HE377 and expressed concern that the pump station, which is currently under construction, may be impacting an unrecorded cemetery.

The purpose of the investigations was to provide cultural resources information that would be beneficial in developing a multi-use trail system in the park that would avoid both direct and potential secondary impacts to archeological sites, when possible, or provide recommendations for mitigative measures, when necessary. Archeological testing of the Fivemile Crossing site, 41MN55, was conducted by Prewitt and Associates, Inc., for the Texas Department of Transportation in November 2006. Located on an alluvial terrace along the San Saba River about 4.3 miles west of Menard, Texas, the site consists of a shallowly buried Late Prehistoric or Protohistoric occupation. Eighteen hand-excavated test units sampled 13.5 m2 from two very narrow strips of intact deposits within the right of way on both sides of FM 2092. The excavations recovered chipped stone artifacts and bone-tempered pottery from a single occupation zone attributed to the Toyah culture. What remains …

As CPS is a publicly owned utility company, ground disturbing work on the property is under the purview of the Antiquities Code of Texas.
