Contemporary urbanization in China is marked by speed, repetition, and similitude, key features of what I call spectral urbanism that also attends to the presence or absence, to recursivity and deferral. The mass development of empty, outmoded, and seemingly abandoned modern ghost cities in China’s borderlands come to be used as evidence of an interruption or lack in the veneer of Chinese modernity. This dissertation is the first English-written study that narrates the development of video art through a transnational and inter-regional analysis of Japanese, Korean and Asian-American artworks from the ‘60s to the ‘80s, which played a central role in establishing video as a truly international visual language. My transpacific approach to video art contests nation-based studies of art history and challenges the transatlantic narrative of video art in Anglo-American art historical literature, which has focused on the relation between video art in Western Europe and North America. The Pakistani city of Lahore is the capital of the Punjab province. The city itself has existed for over a thousand years. In 1947 the British rule in the Indian subcontinent ended, resulting in the partition of British India into the modern states of India and Pakistan. At the time the Punjab province was also partitioned, with the western half (including Lahore) going to Pakistan and the eastern half being awarded to India.
