'Each Wise Nymph That Angles For A Heart': The Politics Of Courtship In The Boston 'Fishing Lady' Pictures, Andrea Pappas
'Each Wise Nymph That Angles For A Heart': The Politics Of Courtship In The Boston 'Fishing Lady' Pictures, Andrea Pappas
Art and Art History
This essay examines the Boston fishing lady embroideries in light of eighteenth-century courtship practice, depictions of women anglers in prints and on decorative porcelain, and recreational fishing in colonial culture. In representing the fishing lady as a successful independent angler, women needleworkers addressed, and even covertly resisted, male control of courtship, a crucial life transaction. The regular placement of the image of the fishing lady in the narratives created by the complex embroideries asserts the woman’s pivotal, if brief, authority in the courtship process.

Angelo Scarlato’s extraordinary and vast collection of art and artifacts related to the Civil War, and specifically to the Battle of Gettysburg, the United States Colored Troops, slavery and the African American struggle for emancipation, citizenship and freedom has proved to be an extraordinary resource for Gettysburg College students. The 2012-14 exhibition in Musselman Library’s Special Collections, curated by Lauren Roedner ’13, entitled Slaves, Soldiers, Citizens: African American Artifacts of the Civil War Era and its corresponding catalogue provided a powerful and comprehensive historical narrative of the period.

Previously Undocumented Art Criticism By Walt Whitman, Wendy J. Katz
Previously Undocumented Art Criticism By Walt Whitman, Wendy J. Katz
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
Whitman’s “Letters from a Travelllling Bachelor,” written for the New York Sunday Dispatch (October 14, 1849, through January 6, 1850) are well known, as is his practice of contributing news about Brooklyn and Brooklyn artists to the Dispatch as well as to other newspapers like the Evening Post.1 But his extended description of a painting by Jesse Talbot, Encampment of the Caravan, in the Evening Post (“Encampment of the Caravan,” April 29, 1851; p. 1), and his critique of the National Academy of Design annual exhibition in the Dispatch of the following year (“An Hour at the Academy of Design,” …

Co-authored with artist Anthony Cervino, this book was produced on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at CulturalDC's Flashpoint Gallery in Washington, DC. Bracquemond, Ruskin, The Haviland-Hayes Service, And Rookwood: Japonisme And Permanence In Art Pottery, Emily G. Campbell
Bracquemond, Ruskin, The Haviland-Hayes Service, And Rookwood: Japonisme And Permanence In Art Pottery, Emily G. Campbell
Theses and Dissertations
There are two principle arguments in this thesis. First, this thesis will show that Félix Bracquemond had a profound impact on late-nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century ceramics in America. Second, this thesis will illustrate how John Ruskin’s principle that pottery is “more permanent than the Pyramids” encouraged reform of the ceramic arts and shaped the Art Pottery Movement of the late nineteenth century. After this thesis introduces Bracquemond as an innovator in ceramic decoration and the dissemination of Ruskin’s principle, the thesis will examine two instances in the American Art Pottery Movement in which Bracquemond’s and Ruskin’s influence can be detected. The …
Norton Simon: The Man With "Two Hats", Helen Ragen
Norton Simon: The Man With "Two Hats", Helen Ragen
Scripps Senior Theses
Norton Simon was a unique collector because he let passion guide his collecting interests, but he controlled his passion by making his purchases based on smart economic decisions bolstered by years of experience in successful business negotiations. The Norton Simon Museum, today in Pasadena, California, displays the eccentric collectors life work as he created one of the greatest and most recognized collections on the west coast. By examining the progression and establishment of Norton Simon Inc., alongside the creation of the Norton Simon Art Foundation, multiple parallels can be drawn between Simons’ unique approach to business and the application of …

History Of Architecture And Urbanism In New York City, Malka Simon, Brooklyn College Library And Academic It
Open Educational Resources
Professor Simon requested a platform where she could provide her students with links to specialized resources and websites that relate to her course that are freely available on the web or through the library. Since her course relies heavily on site visits, she was also looking for a way to share images with students that would be accessible on a mobile device and allow a student to upload images and video to share as well. Mindful of the fact that not all her course material is available on the web, some of the course material is password protected.

My Way Or The Highway And A Correspondence: Visual Representations Of The City, Larkin J. Sheldon
Scripps Senior Theses
This Capstone Project encompasses two videos, each representing different ways to visually structure the experience of “the city”.
The first video, "My Way or the Highway", is a 5 minute piece examining Los Angeles Transportation systems. Through observational footage and a poetic editing style, I compare and contrast the experience of traveling via public and private transportation. Through this video I aim to encourage the viewer to consider their own transportation options whether it is in Los Angeles or anywhere else around the world.
The second is a 12 minute video, titled "A Correspondence" structured as a …

The rate of acceleration of the biologic and synthetic world has for a while now, been in the process of exponentially speeding up, maxing out servers and landfills, merging with each other, destroying each other. The last prehistoric relics on Earth are absorbing the same oxygen, carbon dioxide and electronic waves in our biosphere as us. Thomas Jefferson’S Designs For The Federal District And The National Capitol, 1776-1826, Craig A. Reynolds
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines six major points: 1) it argues that Jefferson is an architect of the United States Capitol, having direct and final say over its design; 2) it asserts that Jefferson set two nationally influential models of architectural taste as part of his movement to reform American architecture, first in Richmond as the Virginia State Capitol and second in Washington as the United States Capitol; 3) it explores those models to define what Jefferson called “cubic” and “spherical” architecture; 4) it suggests that Jefferson used his political appointments to maximize his influence over the design of the United States …
Refinement And Architecture In Early Ypsilanti, Lynda Mccarron
Refinement And Architecture In Early Ypsilanti, Lynda Mccarron
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The objective of this work is to examine refinement and architecture in nineteenth-century America with a focus on rural areas and Ypsilanti, Michigan in particular. The research utilized consists of an analysis of primary and secondary sources. Included among the primary sources are architectural style books such as those by Andrew Jackson Downing, pioneer writings such as those of Caroline Kirkland and Solon Robinson, historical buildings, and probate record inventories of Washtenaw County. Ypsilantians did not assume the genteel refinement that developed in the nineteenth century. They instead modified gentility to become a form of respectability that suited their needs. …
