Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Buildings give an immediate presence to the historical or fictional world, which otherwise is unknown or unfamiliar to the audience. The portrayal of a building’s concrete and specific substance makes the world come alive, although the building itself is a mere segment of the world that it represents. This book will trace the genealogy of this representational role of architecture, going back through the history of film and then further in literature, art, and theater, and identify its pedigree in the nineteenth century, where authors, artists, and stage managers used thorough depictions of buildings to effectively feed the audience’s historical …

Halaf Bead, Pendant And Seal 'Workshops' At Domuztepe: Technological And Reductive Strategies., Ellen H. Belcher

Almost a thousand beads, pendants and seals have been excavated from the site of Domuztepe over the past decade. This paper is based on an examination of the general typology and technology of this assemblage. Manufacturing systems based upon social networks of decentralised organisation of small production ‘workshops’ are explored. It is suggested that these networks shared a system of sequenced actions according to raw material and finished products. A group of unfinished beads in the preliminary phase of production suggests evidence of batched reduction and finishing strategies that balanced breakage risk with a high level of proficiency. Water is an essential resource for human life. Even in the tropical environment of the Maya Lowlands, water scarcity is a concern, because the region cycles between abundant rainfall and seasonal droughts. To understand how societies flourished during periods of water scarcity, archaeologists have studied prehispanic water management in the Maya Lowlands. Yet, water management research has tended to focus predominantly on large urban Maya populations, excluding smaller-scale societies that face the same challenges associated with water scarcity. This study investigates the neighboring non-Maya society of Late Classic (A.D.650-900) Palmarejo in northwestern Honduras to explore how water management was organized …

This is the second volume of publications of the Bet She’an Archaeological Project, the large-scale IAA excavations at the site of Bet She’an – ancient Nysa-Scythopolis. In the Umayyad period, the southern part of the Roman-Byzantine city, now known as Baysān, was converted to industrial use. This volume describes the excavation of the pottery workshop in the Severan theater, one of the largest in Umayyad Baysān, as well as the pottery and glass finds, and discusses traditional pottery workshops and production processes of the period.

The Ramat Bet Shemesh Project was a high-resolution regional study of an area in the Judean Shephelah designated for urban developments, which aimed at recording the ancient remains as well as the natural environment that were to be completely destroyed. The first volume, the Gazetteer (IAA Reports 46), described all the sites surveyed during the project, as well as the results of 100 small-scale excavations. Spolia As Signifiers In Twelfth-Century Rome, Dale Kinney

Opinions on the meaning of the reused objects known as spolia range from Michael Greenhalgh’s position that in 95% of cases, reuse was purely pragmatic to Maria Fabricius Hansen’s claim that the spolia in fourth-century church colonnades represented a Christian worldview in which spolia were potent metaphors of a new world order. Studies of twelfth-century Rome have tended to interpret the use of spolia as an expression of papal ideology and the spirit of the twelfth-century renovatio. This dissertation focuses on the reception and interpretation of the welded steel and canvas reliefs that the American artist Lee Bontecou created between 1959 and 1964.In Chapter 1,I present an overview of the initial critical reception of Bontecou’s steel and canvas reliefs, highlighting those exhibitions and texts from the first half of the 1960s that stand out as important records of this work’s reception. In Chapter 2, I examine the feminist claiming of Bontecou’s reliefs that occurred between 1965 and 1976.Here, I contextualize the feminist response to Bontecou’s art within its historical moment, in order to consider how feminism has …
