Buildings give an immediate presence to the historical or fictional world, which otherwise is unknown or unfamiliar to the audience. The portrayal of a building’s concrete and specific substance makes the world come alive, although the building itself is a mere segment of the world that it represents. This book will trace the genealogy of this representational role of architecture, going back through the history of film and then further in literature, art, and theater, and identify its pedigree in the nineteenth century, where authors, artists, and stage managers used thorough depictions of buildings to effectively feed the audience’s historical …

Kandinsky's Nonrepresentational Art: Finding Meaning Through Aesthetic Experience, Kandice Nikkole Diaz

The art world is not one in which much scholarship has been conducted from a communication perspective. As such, this study attempts to add to the very little body of work that exists in the realms of both art and visual rhetoric. Abstract art, such as that of Wassily Kandinsky, is full of meaning despite the fact that it is nonobjective, and therefore considered meaningless. Using a rhetorical method, I argue that by examining the artwork of Wassily Kandinsky in certain contexts, it is possible to discover the meaning embedded in his abstract paintings, in particular his Compositions and Improvisations.

Rebuilding The Architectural History Of The Fort Vancouver Village, Meredith J. Mullaley

In the mid-19th century, the Fort Vancouver employee Village was one of the most diverse settlements on the Pacific Coast. Trappers, tradesmen, and laborers from Europe, North America, and Hawaii worked and lived within a highly stratified colonial social structure. Their homes have been the site of archaeological research for nearly 50 years, but the architectural features and artifacts have received limited attention. Inspired by an 1845 description of the Village that described houses that were "as various in form" as their occupants, this study examined community-level social relationships in this 19th-century fur trade community through vernacular architecture and landscape. …

The way readers interpret the written word is changing. We look for information almost as much in between the lines as we do in the words themselves. The internet and its tools offer ways for readers to engage the text like never before — can the printed word keep up? This is the second volume of publications of the Bet She’an Archaeological Project, the large-scale IAA excavations at the site of Bet She’an – ancient Nysa-Scythopolis. In the Umayyad period, the southern part of the Roman-Byzantine city, now known as Baysān, was converted to industrial use. This volume describes the excavation of the pottery workshop in the Severan theater, one of the largest in Umayyad Baysān, as well as the pottery and glass finds, and discusses traditional pottery workshops and production processes of the period.

Spolia As Signifiers In Twelfth-Century Rome, Dale Kinney

Opinions on the meaning of the reused objects known as spolia range from Michael Greenhalgh’s position that in 95% of cases, reuse was purely pragmatic to Maria Fabricius Hansen’s claim that the spolia in fourth-century church colonnades represented a Christian worldview in which spolia were potent metaphors of a new world order. Studies of twelfth-century Rome have tended to interpret the use of spolia as an expression of papal ideology and the spirit of the twelfth-century renovatio.
