Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Center for Archaeological Studies at Texas State University-San Marcos conducted additional archaeological investigations for the proposed Fulton Mansion State Historic Site (41AS79) Visitor’s Center, Aransas County, Texas, between October 19 and November 13, 2009 on behalf of the Texas Historical Commission Historic Sites Division. Investigations of the Area of Potential Effect are a continuation of testing investigations begun by Ringstaff in 2007 (Ringstaff 2008). Work was carried out by Carole Leezer as Project Archaeologist, Julian A. Sitters and Sarah Scogin as Archaeological Technicians, and Jon C. Deep East Texas Grave Markers: Types, Styles, And Motifs, Nancy Adgent, Perky Beisel, George Avery
CRHR: Archaeology
Grave markers are often the only physical evidence of a person’s existence and offer opportunities for even ordinary people to ‘speak’ from the grave. Sometimes the deceased selects the marker or leaves instructions for its composition.
In modern times, the grieving family typically chooses the type, style, motif, and inscription according to commercial availability, aesthetic appeal, and budgetary constraints. A cemetery visitor will likely have no idea of the actual circumstances that caused a particular marker to have its shape, design, and decorative elements.
Like other possessions, markers are subject to fashion trends and since the advent of mass production …

Shaping Tokyo: Land Development And Planning Practice In The Early Modern Japanese Metropolis, Carola Hein
Shaping Tokyo: Land Development And Planning Practice In The Early Modern Japanese Metropolis, Carola Hein
Growth and Structure of Cities Faculty Research and Scholarship
From the mid-nineteenth century, Japanese elites experimented with foreign planning concepts and transformed their cities to respond to the demands of modernization. Even though they faced similar situations, knew about established European techniques, and had large open spaces available, they established planning practices that were different from those of their foreign counterparts, building on the country’s own urban history and form, particularities in landownership, development needs, urban planning techniques, and design preferences. This article highlights, first, key issues of landownership, urban form, and urban development in the Edo period (1603—1867) and provides an overview of the urban transformation of Tokyo …

Bauxite Mining And Bead Production In Ghana, John Haigh
Bauxite Mining And Bead Production In Ghana, John Haigh
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Abompe is the current bauxite beadmaking site in Ghana and the hills of the Kwahu Plateau above the village are pocked with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pits dug in search of the raw material. To determine the age of the beadmaking industry in the region, people in Abompe and other villages were interviewed and related stories that suggest the first beadmakers were following the example of people in or around Bepong, a village on the plateau above Abompe. Three areas of bauxite pits on the Kwahu Plateau were investigated to see if there was physical evidence of ancient mining; those …

Collective As Form, Playground As Medium, Tim Stott
Collective As Form, Playground As Medium, Tim Stott
Conference Papers
Playgrounds offer a medium for forms of collective organisation. To a greater or lesser degree withdrawn from consequence, playgrounds might loosen otherwise binding collective forms, and provide both models of and models for present and future collectivities. But when play is becoming pervasive and dispersed throughout contemporary post-industrial societies, no longer knowing its time or place, by what means such modelling of collectivities might be observed and played out? The task of this paper is to examine how some contemporary participatory art works might provide such a means. Not because with such works we play more or play better, but …
"The Urban Praetor's Tribunal" In Spaces Of Justice In The Roman World, Eric Kondratieff
"The Urban Praetor's Tribunal" In Spaces Of Justice In The Roman World, Eric Kondratieff
History Faculty Publications
"Book abstract: Despite the crucial role played by both law and architecture in Roman culture, the Romans never developed a type of building that was specifically and exclusively reserved for the administration of justice: courthouses did not exist in Roman antiquity. The present volume addresses this paradox by investigating the spatial settings of Roman judicial practices from a variety of perspectives. Scholars of law, topography, architecture, political history, and literature concur in putting Roman judicature back into its concrete physical context, exploring how the exercise of law interacted with the environment in which it took place, and how the spaces …

The exhibition includes new paintings of crystal caves and personified icebergs, along with ink on vellum works. Field Reports
The excavation season of 2010 consisted of two sessions of two weeks each with an extended week at the end of the second session. Altogether the excavation extended from May 23 until June 25. Ninety-seven students and faculty members participated in the dig. As usual the expedition was housed in Kibbutz Ginosar. We are very grateful for the extraordinary hospitality that has been consistently shown to the expedition since 1994.

Revisiting Indian Rouletted Ware And The Impact Of Indian Ocean Trade In Early Historic South Asia, Peter Magee
Revisiting Indian Rouletted Ware And The Impact Of Indian Ocean Trade In Early Historic South Asia, Peter Magee
Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Indian Rouletted Ware pottery is the iconic marker of the overseas reach of the subcontinent at the turn of the first millennium AD. In the mid twentieth century this was naturally seen as prompted by the contemporary Roman Empire, while the later post-colonial discourse has emphasised the independence and long life of Indian initiatives. In this new analysis the author demonstrates a more complex socio-economic situation. While Greyware is distributed long term over south India, Rouletted ware is made in at least two regional centres for coastal communities using a new ceramic language, one appropriate to an emerging international merchant …
