In September 1765, an advertisement in the South Carolina Gazette announced the establishment of a potworks near Charleston. The gentleman in question was John Bartlam, a resident of Stoke-on-Trent Parish in Staffordshire, England, who had been in the potting business for roughly twelve years before immigrating to Charleston. The full impact of Bartlam' s potworks on the colonial ceramics trade is still unknown, as Bartlam's kiln has not been found. But archaeological excavations at Cainhoy, South Carolina (38BK1349), the site of his pottery from 1763 to 1769, have revealed …

Modern Mahua literature refers to the literature written in Chinese by writers in Malaysia. It appeared in 1919 and since then, this literature has developed for more than eighty years. However, due to limitations of language and translation, many who do not know the Chinese language never have the opportunity to appreciate modern Mahua literature. This dissertation is an effort to investigate modern Mahua literature. It is hoped that with this research the national literature of Malaysia would be further enriched, and a new form of literature be established in the country. This study compares the novels of two modern …

Secularism as an ideology has long affected Islamic civilization. It is defined as separating the worldly life from religion leaving negative impact on muslims especially and men generally for they are not bound to follow religious authority. This dissertation will look at how the idea of secularism started in the West, beginning with the Renaissance to Enlightenment leading subsequently to many European revolutions which emphasize on rationality in problem solving rather than following the Church order. This form of secularism was then adapted and practived by the muslim countries and communities. The author starts this dissertation by outlining the research …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The legitimization of caricature also involved a concurrent effort by artists like Honore Daumier, Gustave Courbet, and Paul Cezanne, who incorporated caricatural elements within their painted works. Rather than adopting the traditional strategy of marginalizing …
