IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

The Kidron Valley was one of the main burial grounds of First Temple-period Jerusalem, and numerous tombs were also hewn here during the Second Temple period. During road works in the valley, three large, elaborate Second Temple-period tombs were exposed, which contained an abundance of rich and intact finds, some still in situ, including pottery, glass, jewelry, a sarcophagus and many ossuaries, some inscribed. The finds also provided evidence that the tombs were reused during the Roman and Byzantine periods. BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The Juang comprise a major primitive community in the state of Orissa in east-central India. Until relatively recently, they had a rich material culture. In particular, their dress and ornaments were very important to them. Today, only very old women wear beads and other ornaments in the traditional way, except on special occasions. This paper seeks to reconstruct the traditional costume of the Juang, with emphasis on the beads, and notes the changes it has undergone over the past 130 years. On October 27, 1996, a salvage excavation was conducted at the Jelil (Gelilot) site (Permit No. A-2561/1996, map ref. 18230–5/67435–50). The excavation, undertaken on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, was directed by I. Ben David, with the assistance of Y. Nagar (physical anthropology), V. Pirsky and D. Porotzky (surveying), Y. Gorin-Rosen (glass finds), and R. Kool (numismatics).

This dissertation is a close consideration of photographs by Tina Modotti (1896-1942), whose work marks the beginning of a modernist aesthetic in post-Revolutionary Mexico. Modotti's photographs are distinguished by a formal clarity coupled with incisive social content. Her work was informed by dominant modes of modernist photographic practice manifest in America and Europe in the 1920s.

This study sets out previously unknown biographical information on Modotti in Chapters I through IV. Modotti was among the many expatriate artists and intellectuals who settled in Mexico during the 1920s, when the country was undergoing a cultural Renaissance. This rebirth was stimulated by …

According to the biblical account the Transjordanian region was occupied with somewhat organized societies during the time of the Exodus (ca. 15th century B.C.). Unfortunately, archaeological excavations could not confirm this account, and as result, the biblical data have been dismissed as unreliable and historically inaccurate.

The purpose of this study was to provide the most recent archaeological data as well as to reinterpret the old data to see whether or not the biblical account bears any historical value. For this reason, this dissertation provides evidence from three fields: archaeological, anthropological, and biblical.

Perhaps because of the somewhat inchoate and seemingly disorganized nature of the world of the arts, most students of modern social history and professions have steered clear of engagement with this fascinating crowd. Yet further acquaintance with the subject reveals that artists did in fact attempt to professionalize, and -- even if their efforts were not as successful as those of some others -- these efforts left a clear record of articulated demands and statements.

Unraveling An Ancient Peruvian Tapestry Sampler: A Study Of Weaver Education In The Ica Valley, Peru, Elizabeth Sara Lewis

A tapestry from the Ica Valley of Peru (A.D. 900-1476), in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia, is the subject of this study. This thesis is an attempt to demonstrate that the tapestry is an example of a textile form known as a "sampler." Woven as a learning tool and template by an apprentice and an expert weaver within the style and reflecting the iconography of Ica art.
