DéSiré Charnay: Photographer, Keith F. Davis

Art & Art History ETDs

Désiré Charnay, born in France in 1828, was a traveler, explorer, author and photographer best known for his studies of the Pre-Columbian ruins in Mexico. Educated and well-read, Charnay taught school in New Orleans before embarking on his 1857-61 expedition to Mexico. Using the cumbersome wet collodion process, he made the first successful photographs of the ruined monuments of Mitla, Chichén-Itzá, Palenque, Izamal and Uxmal. These were published in a large folio of original photographic prints, entited Cités et ruines américaines, in Paris in 1862. Charnay returned to these and other Mexican sites in 1880-82 and 1886, and published many …

Changes In My Images From 1977 To 1979, Sandra Rothfork Jul 1979

Changes In My Images From 1977 To 1979, Sandra Rothfork

Art & Art History ETDs

During the period from 1977 through 1979 my pictorial images have undergone a gradual, but ultimately radical, change in appearance; though the philosophical sources for the paintings have remained the same. Using phenomenological and Buddhist definitions for samsara (constant change) and maya (appearance and reality) as the ideational basis for my images, I initially used a photorealistic technique. Finding epistemological problems with this method, I have recently used an abstract expressionist style. I have also replaced glass with water as a metaphor for consciousness. In painting water I have been influenced by the work of Joseph Raffael and Clyfford Still. …

A Statement On Recent Work, Sharon Siskin

Art & Art History ETDs

I am influenced and motivated by numerous elements, both inside and outside the realm of art. In this thesis I will explain how these elements have influenced the making of my art. I have decided to divide the discussion of my work into three sections. The first section will deal with color, the second with the grid and the third with the use of craft elements in this work. A final section will be added to bring these three sections together and to allude briefly to future directions of this wok.

Architectural Woodwork Of Colonial And Territorial New Mexico, Viviana Nigro Holmes

Art & Art History ETDs

While a frightening number of examples of New Mexico's architectural heritage is eroding, the wood used in the construction of doors, windows, roofs and porches is less transient, thus providing a clearer more complete record of architectural styles of this area. It is the woodwork of the Colonial and Territorial periods which is the focus of this study, whose purpose is to describe, define and illustrate the different phases of the woodworking traditions as they relate to the architectural traditions of New Mexico.

A photographic record of important examples of this woodwork has been compiled and a chronology of architectural …

Toward A Feminist Sensibility, Barbara J. Nugent May 1979

Toward A Feminist Sensibility, Barbara J. Nugent

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis recounts the many influences that have been important in the transition of my work from purely formalist concerns to ideas and content reflective of a more feminist sensibility. I have shown how these influences affected my work, not only in content, but also in the marks and the images used. The problems inherent in such a transformation have been cited as have the solutions to these problems. I see myself as a woman artist who is projecting her sense of power as a woman, who has deliberately chosen content based on being a woman artist, and who is …

The Concerns And Concepts Underlying My Photographic Work, Mark Ivan Hinderaker Apr 1979

The Concerns And Concepts Underlying My Photographic Work, Mark Ivan Hinderaker

Art & Art History ETDs

This is an examination of the underlying concepts and the formal characteristics of my photographic work. In my work, the repetition of formal elements, the visual meanings which emerge from the sequential interplay of the images, and my interest in visual problems related to depth and surface, are combined with a diaristic and existential viewpoint in the use of the camera and with an interest in photographing American material culture. My work is in the tradition of Robert Frank and uses insights from my study of Ralph Gibson's use of sequencing. I see my work in relation to poetry and …

The Sequential Photographs Of EugèNe Atget, Photographer Of Paris, Donald Lee Neal

Art & Art History ETDs

An examination is made of Atget's style, the range, scope and content of his photographic work. The purpose of this dissertation is: to clarify facts about Atget's career, to draw conclusions about the way Atget photographed and developed a personal style through an examination of Atget's original prints and other source material, and to determine whether the published view of Atget is representative of his work as a whole. Eugene Atget made an exhaustive photographic record of aspects of Paris and its surroundings. While his work was methodical, it was not systematic; mature but lacking in the overall structural clarity …

A Curriculum Model For Teacher Art Education (P1-P3) In Nigeria, Olayinka Ajayi-Kardin Jan 1979

A Curriculum Model For Teacher Art Education (P1-P3) In Nigeria, Olayinka Ajayi-Kardin

Art & Art History ETDs

This dissertation is aimed at developing an art education teacher-training program that is consistent with the Nigerian traditional culture and the national goals of education. In traditional Nigeria, amidst the network of fundamental religious beliefs, values, rites, and practices, creative activities are not given titles or names because art is a way of life that explains the past and helps Nigerians to relate to the present world. The arts mediate social relations, express emotion, and maintain social stability. However, years of colonial government brought an imposition of Western and Christian values on Nigerians. Nigeria has a rich culture with valuable …

Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations: The Photograph As Fact And Other Aspects Of Ed Ruscha's Books, Henri Man Barendse

Art & Art History ETDs

This paper analyzes the fourteen books California artist Ed Ruscha published from 1962 to 1972. Initial discussion of the emergence of Pop Art and the so-called "L.A. Look" form the background for a review of the artist's life and career. This is followed by a brief chronology and descriptions of the books establishing their impact and influence on contemporary art and photography. The publications are discussed in relation to significant movements during the decade, such as Conceptual Art, and it is concluded that they are unique and therefore escape easy categorization. Ruscha's inconoclastic attitude and "styleless" approach to photography as …

Decoration And Pattern As Picture, Nancy Norman Dec 1978

Decoration And Pattern As Picture, Nancy Norman

Art & Art History ETDs

Many of the concepts for my imagery are drawn from an attitude of affirming the decorative in art and a personal choice to further explore those possibilities. Ornamentation can enhance art, not because it is superfluous and not because it can embellish life with beauty, but as in the ornamental arts themselves it can magnify qualities already present in material life and work. In this presentation I present my decorative ideas in art from a contemporary perspective in terms of an art historical context a well as through my individual vision represented by paintings, lithographs, and paper pieces. Both sections …

Picto-Relieves Ritmicos: Una Forma De Integrar La Pintura Y La Escultura, Miguel A. Sosa Dec 1978

Picto-Relieves Ritmicos: Una Forma De Integrar La Pintura Y La Escultura, Miguel A. Sosa

Art & Art History ETDs

The "picto-reliefs" are a solution for the integration of painting and sculptural elements. This integration is resolved by an abstract format where lines, planes and bands are projected in a constructivist manner. In this paper, an examination is made of the relationships that exist between visual images and "sonorous" images, between visual rhythms and musical relationships, and between color and certain qualities of sound. The bands are a key element in the "picto-reliefs". The bands create a three-dimensional form in the painting, therefore transforming the painting into a relief. The bands also possess ''musical power”, since according to the color …

This thesis shall be an examination of the various ideas and interests which have influenced my photography. The discussion will concentrate on the four main bodies of work I have produced since I became seriously involved with photography. The photographs in the first group were done during the years from 1974 through 1976 while I was living in Lansing, Michigan and working as a commercial photographer. The next series of photographs was created between 1976 and 1977, shortly after I began my post-graduate studies at the University of New Mexico. The third body of work is entitled "The Interrupted Landscape" …

The Landscape Photographs Of Darius Kinsey, Ansel Adams, Alvin Langdon Coburn And Harry Callahan, Eric Barton Johnson

Art & Art History ETDs

The landscape is introduced as a useful motif in order to examine the sensibilities of a group of photographers toward the same subject in detail and in addition discuss some aspects of the mediation imposed by the camera lens on any subject. Four photographers are examined with a detailed analysis of four to six images from each: Darius Kinsey (1871-1940), Ansel Adams (1902-    ), Alvin Langdon Coburn (1882-1966), and Harry Callahan (1912-    ). Mother Knows Best, Robert Saxby

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis is a personal and brief chronicle of my artistic development. It attempts to put my art, and my attitudes toward art into a biographical framework. The English educational system, my emigration to the United States, and my three years at the University of New Mexico are examined, and the effects of each of these experiences on my work are noted. The thesis also deals, quite specifically, with my art work. What I have created, even how I have created it, is briefly discussed. I also scan the primary ideas and influences on my work. Modern Photography In America: Marketing The Machine Esthetic, Joseph Maurice Deal May 1978

Modern Photography In America: Marketing The Machine Esthetic, Joseph Maurice Deal

Art & Art History ETDs

During the intervening years between World War I and World War II an international spirit and style matured in art and architecture, based on a "machine esthetic," which was a blend of pre-World War I movements in painting (Cubism, Futurism) and a more sober and practical application of these abstract principles in architecture, design, and the popular arts which developed in France and Germany after the war. This style became recognized and accepted in America, and popularly characterized as “modernistic.” Two closely related institutions of American photography provided the impetus and direction of the modern style in photography: The Pictorial …

David Hockney: Literary Painting In The Twentieth Century, Nicholas Martin Jones

Art & Art History ETDs

The Royal College of Art was the focus of British Pop during the Fifties and Sixties in London. The "Mod" phenomenon, and the events in English history which preceeded it, were instrumental in forming the climate in which the young British artists worked. David Hockney's days as a student at the Royal College during that time in England formed the basic stance that would direct his future career. At the College Hockney met H.B. Kitaj, who would give him the confidence to paint literary and figurative pictures at a time when American Abstract Expressionism dominated the art world. In following …

Reflections On The Mundane, Virginia Stone Yen Apr 1978

Reflections On The Mundane, Virginia Stone Yen

Art & Art History ETDs

For me life has always been a splendid tapestry made of ordinary objects, daily routines and common occurrences. When I make art the main thread of thought is a deliberate exploration of what people frequently encounter in everyday living. Etched in my mind are many moments of awe over some commonplace experiences. I want to communicate this sense of wonder because I think the mundane is a common ground which can facilitate communication and perhaps be a springboard for comprehension of existence.

Besides a clarification of this basic concern with the mundane, I also include some personal philosophy and quests …

The Photography Of Charles Fletcher Lummis, 1887 To 1892, James Richard Hajicek

Art & Art History ETDs

Charles Lummis is well known for his cultural contribution to the American Southwest as a writer, magazine editor and museum founder. He was also a photographer worthy of consideration although very little attention has been given in the past to this aspect of his multifaceted career. From the fall of 1887 to the fall of 1892 Charles Lummis produced an extensive body of cyanotypes and salt prints documenting the Indians, pueblos, geological landmarks and archeological ruins of the Southwest. These photographs represent not only a valuable historical and ethnological record, they offer a significant contribution to the history of photography. …

The Camera: Its Literary Context, Dana Asbury

A discussion is undertaken of modern ideas on the nature of appearance and reality, and how these ideas relate to photography, especially portraiture.

An examination is made of some portrait photographers (August Sander, Richard Avedon, Arnold Newman, Diane Arbus) to trace the evolution of my own approach, which is further related to some movements in art history (Romanticism, Surrealism) and to twentieth century literature (Virginia Woolf).

Of Elements, Memories, And Dreams, Margaret Emily Newman Apr 1978

Of Elements, Memories, And Dreams, Margaret Emily Newman

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis is an exploration of the relationship between my paintings and various memories, reflections, and experiences. Because there is an elusiveness to the memories of experience which over time confuses dreams and reality, I describe these events in prose poem forms, which seems better suited to the nature of these reflections.

A general examination is made of the author's personal history as a photograph r from 1970 to 1977, with concurrent evaluations of the changes in his pictures under the pressure of events.
