Michael Fischer early commented that in “Cavell’s work, literature is always bringing to mind philosophy, and philosophy is always opening itself to literature, generating a dialogue that transforms each one.” (3) For Cavell, this dialogue unfolds around the philosophical problem of skepticism. Romanticism around 1800 was not only invested in questioning the differences between philosophy and literature, but also absorbed by the problem of skepticism. The specific combination of literature and skepticism, however, changes the appearance of the latter. This is a German-to-English translation of Bishop Joseph E. Peachey’s (Belleville, PA) account of the September 1955 Allgemeinie Diener Versammlung in Holmes-Wayne Counties, OH. While Holmes-Wayne Amish leaders called the meeting, seeking to achieve peace and resolution, instead, the meeting finalized a pending schism between the Old Order (or South Churches) and the Andy Weaver (or Dan) factions. The main focus was on a group of laymen that had withdrawn from the Orrville Amish church (Wayne County) because they did not want to practice a Bann the church district leaders had decreed. This is a German-to-English translation of a report describing several Amish schisms where the main dispute concerned the Bann (excommunication), Meidung (shunning), and the full council of the brotherhood prior to these actions. The author was a committee member who investigated church unrest in the Seymour, MO, Amish settlement in 1974. The author argues from the New Testament and Menno Simons’ writings that leaders should not use the Bann to control people or get someone out of the way, as the Pharisees of the New Testament did, but should use it to help the sinner and keep the brotherhood clear …

Ordnungs Briefen Of 1865, 1917, And 1939: English Translations Of Important Old Amish Church Orders, Dan Raber, Gregory Sheets, Cory Anderson

This is a German-to-English translation of four important decisions made by Amish church leaders. The first, in 1865, was the charter agreement that launched the Old Order movement among the Amish, as the progressive Amish-Mennonites who had been organizing annual conferences since 1863 refused to acknowledge the Ordnung Brief at the 1865 conference. The second, which also affirms the first, was written in 1917. It occurred in the shadow of the Sam Yoder division, and like the first, addresses pressures of the day on Amish practice and thought. German Immigration And Its Ties To Landscape Change In Nebraska, Lindsey Labrie

This thesis uses a multidimensional approach to frame the different waves of German immigration within the context of land use change in Nebraska. By recounting the historical challenges and struggles Germans faced in their homelands, this thesis provides similarities between historical immigration patterns throughout the state. Observing the timing of these movements of people paints a clearer picture of how these immigrants might have helped change the farming and cultural landscapes of Nebraska. Knowing and recognizing historical immigration in Nebraska cultivates a deeper appreciation for the current relations between immigrants and Nebraska’s physical landscape.

The Musical Poetics Of Witness: Two Anthropocene Journeys, Heidi Hart

Kerstin Ekman’s The Forest of Hours (first published in Swedish in 1988) and Jenny Erpenbeck’s Visitation(published in German as Heimsuchung in 2008) span two decades and two countries, but both novels reach across far larger epochs, in their respective journeys from Europe’s glacial prehistory through the Dark Ages and the Thirty Years War, and through the twentieth century’s collective trauma. Merkel The German “Empress Dowager”? Reactions To The Syrian Refugee Crisis In China And Other East Asian Countries, Qinna Shen

Taking a cue from a painting by Jiny Lan, a Chinese artist living in Germany, which captures Merkel’s refugee policy in 2015, the article examines both official and popular responses to the recent Syrian refugee crisis in China and other East Asian countries. In the painting, Merkel wears a Manchu-style headdress typical of women at the Qing court. Lan’s portrait of the German Chancellor resembles the Empress Dowager Cixi—one of the most powerful women in Chinese history, and a ruler with a contentious legacy. The article distills some of the major reasons for a positive or negative attitude toward accepting …

An Ethnic Cultural Landscape: German Breweries And Social Institutions In Covington, Kentucky, 1860-1920, Andrew Jones

A useful marker for recognizing the impact that ethnic groups make to the social and cultural characteristics of a city are the institutions and material landscapes created by those groups. In northern Kentucky, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, German immigrants and their descendants in the city of Covington established institutions such as breweries, saloons, social associations, and churches that became the heart of ethnic neighborhoods and shaped the form of the landscape. This thesis discusses two female weavers, Gunta Stölzl and Anni Albers, and their critical works from 1920-1935 that shaped Bauhaus weaving and the artistic significance of the medium. Over the course of three chapters, the thesis discusses Stölzl's shift from pictorial to material interests, Albers' themes of mass production and industry, and the women's post Bauhaus years which involved Stölzl blending work and art and Albers expanding the capabilities and fine art presence of textile.

Bilingual story time programs found in local community libraries not only benefit children, they can also serve a need for L2 college students: the development of their communicative skills in an authentic environment. In addition to linguistic benefits, experiential learning has proven to prepare students for real-world skills, such as networking, mock professional experience and a sense of community engagement. This paper recounts how a world language story time program supports L2 learners’ three modes of communication, as articulated by ACTFL, and necessary for language development. Contemplating the place of remembrance and history within German environmentalism has driven the idea of this thesis and its research. My central aim is to capture at least a slice of how Germans today perceive nature, environmentalism, and themselves within the context of a cultural history that contains both a national socialist and an environmental narrative. These two narratives have, during periods of German history, intersected. While I originally thought the influence of national socialist environmental thought would still penetrate Germans’ perception of nature, my findings revealed instead that German perceptions of environmentalism and ideas of nature are rooted in …

The present study addresses language contact processes in which the phonetic systems of the languages that bilinguals speak interact. Specifically, language transfer with respect to English and German was examined, focusing on native German speakers (L1) who learned English as a second language (L2). It employed as its central method an analysis of their vowel systems, both language-specifically and cross-linguistically. Extralinguistic variables were also considered, ranging from speakers’ age of acquisition (AOA) of English to their length of residence in an English-speaking environment to their consideration of home. Representing large-scale historical traumatic events can be problematic as accounts are often subjective and biased. It is difficult to determine if the subjective historical account is factually accurate or not. When discussing the Holocaust, representation is an important factor. How is the Holocaust represented? This paper shows how literature can fill in the gaps of historical representation. I focus on psychoanalyst Dori Laub’s three levels of the witness and their role in testimony in relation to Holocaust literature. Die Ziele dieser Masterarbeit bestehen darin, dass die gesprochensprachlichen Besonderheiten in Bereichen Phonetik und Syntax, anhand der 81 authentischen Gesprache im Korpus, Plattform Gesprochenes Deutsch”, erforscht warden. Ein weiteres Ziel ist die daraus resultierenden Befunde als Grundlage der Phanomenauswahl zur Gestaltung der Unterrichtsskizzen zu verwenden. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht das Konzept Leichte Sprache. In dieser Arbeit warden die Ubertragungsstrategien bei kausalen und konditionalen. Satz-verknupfungen anhand des selbst zusammengestellten Korpus sowohl theoretisch als auch empirisch untersucht. Das Korpus besteht aus insgesamt 14 Texten, sieben Texte sind in Standardsprache und sieben Texte sind ihre Ubertragung in die Leichten Sprache. Aus der Untersuchung ergibt sich, dass die Ubertragung in die Leichte Sprache die Merkmale der denotativen und pragmatischen Aquivalenz nach Koller erfults. Daruber hinaus wird ersichtlich, dass die Ubertragung in die Leichte Sprache von der Interpretation der Ubersetzenden abhangig ist. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Adjektiv-Substantiv-Kollokationen in Ortsbe-schreibungen in ausgewahlten Reisefuhrern uber Thailand. Hierbei handelt es sich um vier etablierte Reisefuhrer von vier Verlagen. Das Untersuchungskorpus umfasst insgesamt 446.580 Tokens und 38.824 Worttypen. Die Konkordanz-Software AntConc 3.5.8 wird zunachst fur die Herausfilterung einer Liste von Substantiven eingesetzt, die als Suchworter verwendet warden, wobei jedes Suchwort mindesten 100-mal im Korpus vorkommen muss. Aus 105 ausgewahlten Suchwortern warden schlieBlich 8.563 Adjektiv-Substantiv-Kollokationen ermittelt. Die Adjektiv-Substantiv-Kollokationen mit mindestens zwei Adjektivattributen werden nach Schmidts Typen der Attribuierungskomplikationen analysiert.
